Sasa0mg’s Grey Knight & 40K blog!

Welcome to my Grey Knights and various WH40K blog, this really is a side project to
my Skaven work to which you can find a link to in my forum signature but at the
same time this is going to be much further in depth with its development because of
the more concentrated and smaller number of figures the army contains!

Within the following blog I will continually update and respond to the thread as my
Grey knights and co. (40K) minis develop into full fruition as an army with viable
fluffing, modifications and painting included!
Hell I even took some pictures of the boxes!

Below I’m going to throw in a table of contents just to organize things a little bit,
updates will be modified directly into this original post and update notifications will be
posted as replies! This thread will be updated regularly so keep an eye out for it!

For anyone that has anything they would like to point out and add feel free to post here
and leave feedback, I love to hear criticism's and suggestions as well as idea's be it
Army lists, modelling, painting or just casual chat!

Contents:

1a: The army list – A quick overlook at my army list for use in the actual tabletop game

1b: The models – Nothing too special here, I’ll have a couple of pictures of my
purchases as well as a price-up for the army itself, what I spent, where I got my minis
from and all that good stuff.

My collection so far – Speaks for itself, an expansion onto the minis really, this will
be were I put my GK progressed images, information and such. Expect some painting
steps, modification and generally what’s going on with the army at the moment.

1d: Fluff & storified batrep-things – As it says!

The Grey Knights!

So far my Grey knight army list/shopping list is running for the average 2000pt games
and the general mindset behind it is to go as small as possible in that because my
other army collection happens to be Skaven and I run about 300 models in 2000’ish
points I’ve planned to go the complete opposite with WH40K and at the same time
attempt to go somewhat against the grain of your regular competitive 40k GK army
list… That means no psycannon’s at all. None… not even one.
Madness?
MADNESS!? THIS IS THE 41st MILLENIUM AND THERE IS ONLY WAR!

Ehum, that outburst out the way my list is as follows
Spoiler:

GREY KNIGHTS SPACE MARINES

Content:

Okay, now that list probably requires a little explanation .
The general idea that I’m going for as I said before was going for a very small and
elite army, yes it’s a Draigo wing but not your usual one and it has its flaws. The idea
or gameplan really is to force the opponent to play Russian roulette with the
Stormravens as to which one they focus on first and at the same time hope that they
don’t manage to pull off bringing down both. Ideally I will always want the first turn
and I’m aware that there will be some missions that don’t favour me!
Now the tricky part is situational as to deciding whether I spend my first turn moving
up full speed and not disembarking asap and try and get a secondary movement in my
second turn that isn’t full speed which will allow me to leave the Stormraven and
charge in the second turn or whether I disembark at speed and accept the deep striking
rules. Each Stormraven will be carrying identical units with the sole difference that
ONE of them is carrying Draigo hence the roulette.

And all the while my ninja-like assassin will probably be present in there most elite
unit waiting to arrive with d6 strength 4 attacks with no saves!
So yeah that’s the general run down for this army list.
^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^v^v^^

Now moving onto the more important parts!
The Models
So! Moving onto the important bit as I said, this being my GK models!, in the
picture below as I'm starting fairly slowly you can see my GK bits un
assembled. Probably seen in the picture above I have a lot more to show then
this image here so bare with me as I get to it!
Here I have my forgeworld Dreadnought, Apothecary Paladin with warding
staff, he's actually assembled and Draigo currently in bits. Needless to say it
didn't take me long at all to get to work on that dreadnought, I love it.

Coming in at about twice the price of the regular dreadnought forgeworld
manage to maintain my customer satisfaction by providing an immaculate
casting for me. The body itself at £27.00 and each of the arms at £8.00 each
puts this at a total of £43.00, almost double your regular dreadnought but I
think rather worth it. The GK insignias will save me a lot of free hand work
and I think really set it aside from your vanilla space marine dreadnoughts.
Now the arms... The arms I really like. Grey knights being the elitists of the
Imperium that they are I felt I struggled to find a sophisticated way of giving
my dreadnought 'heavy flamer and flamer' as I've chosen in my lists. A lot of
the 'heavy' flamers just seemed to look no different then regular flamers so I
figured if that were the case I was instead going to branch out and get myself
something a little more unique. Here I've gone for the Dreadfire Close Combat
Arms with integrated Heavy Flamer(s) and I think they fit the bill perfectly.

And here a better close up of the Dreadfire Close Combat Arms with integrated Heavy Flamer(s).

For a side note, I will definitely be getting a 2nd one of these to add to my army!

In Addition~
WH40K Stuff!
Here I'm just going to chronicle I guess, side projects and certain distractions
as they come to me, featuring some older work, newer work and works to come!
This too will be updated

Firstly I'm going to throw up a picture of one of my old SoB, namely Celestine I
couldn't resist this model I just wish I could have modified it more.

It is kinda old, and yeah maybe a little dusty! But its a start to this section :>!

Small update, tomorrow I'll be getting somewhat of a side project getting my hands on some regular space marines that I'm going to be looking to do up as "Angry marines" just because xD
I also found this older model of mine and decided upon re-basing it with some of the newer resin bases that I plan on using with an IG detachment that through some fluff etc but for now I'm just gunna throw this up xD

Haha xD I wanted to try and give it a playful link with my grey knights so I figured the phrase would come well from my commissar lord in the imperial reserve unit for my GK. You'll see more of her and draigo hopefully in the near future as I'm planning to have those commissioned !

For now though I'm really trying to decide on basing.. because regardless of what I pick I know I wont be able to really match it with the gaming table im using.. at the same time I tried to use magnets on one of my termies, now I seem to have gotten them stuck too far in and they' too are completely useless! So I'm a little at a loss there atm.. and I'm also in need of some really good brushes, these GW ones just aren't cutting it on my test pieces - its like they degrade way too quickly.

Brief update, because I haven't gotten my angry marines yet I've constructed my Paladins, still waiting to get to the GW for paints regarding my own work and feedback from commissioners for draigo and etc!

I haven't gone to base these yet but, I still can't decide on a base for them...

Still stormraven to be assembled! Oh and I need to update my army list because I decided against having 2 paladins in draigo's unit with the same loadout, so I've thrown in a halberd for some advantage against other marines!

Little update, my GK paladins are being sent off to be commission painted \o/ yay. So hopefully they will return all nice and shiny painted

As for the stuff I'm doing personally, I'm still working on my angry marineeee heres some pics so far of the model. I haven't under-coated it yet

I specifically got myself a chaos power fist/claw and modded it out, even put a custom resin arm bracer on it so that it would fir the directions that I wanted so he is indead flipping a birdy in true angry marine spirit I haven't put the jetpack on just yet because it'l be painted separately.

Painting has begun!

Little dissapointed with the shoulder so far.. I don't know how to get the metal to look cleanly done, it looks.. like the paint is thick through lack of definition but its more-so the way that the metal covers, forming the divide with silver is difficult. I had it looking better before the shoulder, but the actual decal had to be done a couple of times before it actually came out right.. which caused the shoulder pad to come out a little.. dirty? I most likely will come back to this to add battle damage to it just because I'm really not a fan of how un-smoothe the paint on this shoulder is. It was just difficult to get the fading AND the smiley to work... let alone the silver, really need a better way to get smoother fading as well as a better metal trim effect.

Really don't know any good techniques for getting 'clean' paint job any advice or input would be very helpful :S

Notha update, really not liking how this angry mahreen is coming out lol. I think I'm going to end up paint stripping it and starting over from scratch and just paint a completely different way with paint thats probably more water then paint... For some reason things just aren't coming out how there supposed to and it just looks like theres a massive build up of paint on the model...Im not sure whats causing the problem, if I'm just rushing or if the heat from my lamp is causing the paint to dry too quickly so it stacks up quicker or if my paint isn't watered down enough, but then again how much is enough? I wan't the model to retain a smooth crisp result and its annoying because I know I can do it, its just about how I'm doing it and something somewhere is causing me major problems...

As well as that i think I need to re-visit some battle damage tutorials and use ink a little less. think I used it a little relyantly in the past and its starting also to cause me problems.

Little updateeeeeee

Blood Angels chapter master is on the way, along with a whole bunch of Vajello paints, think thats how you spell it. I've been reading up and these are naturally alot less concerntrated then GW paints from the pot, that said they also force the use of a pallet which is a good habbit for me to get into! Hopefully it will aid in a dramatic increase of my painting ability when theres no temptation to use paint straight from the pot.. which my angry mahreen has suffered from.

He is also currently being paint stripped for a second go.. whether I make him an angry marine still I haven't decided on >.<

On the upside! I've sent my first unit of GK paladins away to be painted up appropriately! if all is good the whole army will be being commissioned to be done following the paladins return! >.< and hopefully nothing bad goes wrong, its my first time commissioning work!

Still I need a different artist hopefully to work on my up-coming Callidus assassin... Now this was a pain in the rear to get in the UK, as its an out of production model from some french company. I origionally found the model here on Dakka in someones pictures and knew I had to have it for a callidus! as I really hate the GW model.

This is, like the callidus a female model much more slender I think in a more natural pose. I'm yet to customize the c'tan blade onto her just yet and the head is still being worked on. I'm torn between using a visored helmet style head or my preferred dark elf wytch head. Hopefully it will go on and fit quite nicely though this model as I said is a little more slender and realistically proportioned then your regular GW model so I mayyyy have to get something specifically for its head!

But yes I'm currently looking for a commission painter who copes well with less bulky models wearing body tight mildly armoured bodysuits

Automatically Appended Next Post:
A few more quick pictures without the use of flash, better shows the slender figure of the model in these particular images though there not all as sharp.

Images so far!

main body is nearly ready for painting, the base has been set to work, after its undercoated ill apply a some altered water effect / blood for the sceneric effect, the damage has been greenstuff'd and carved into the actual model. All that needs doing really is sanding down some imperfections now the green stuff is dry and itl be good to go for the main chest piece.

Thanks I wan't this guy when he's finished to be pretty war torn and it felt like just duing the usual scratches and stains weren't really enough so yeah. an update on my blood angel guy now that I've gotten some vallejo paint! One thing I've noticed is that some reason I have some bits in my paintwork either from my crappy brush or the makeshift pallets or something I'm not quite sure. Going to have to be careful with it in the future it may have been the paint layering not quite dry I'm not sure. I noticed this stuff chips off alot easier as well!

I've gone to start with for an older version of the blood angels scheme which is a fiery / orange red and I'm still in need of doing the gold decal ontop of everything else. I did have to take him a part for this and start painting him bit at a time so legs are almost done so far!

Still we here so its kinda sharp.

Once its all done I'll need to paint the additional battle damage and such Think this albeit I'm seeing a few imperfections in the paint, its doing far far better then my other marine.

Thankful this sunday I will have the chance to go to GW and grab myself some nice gold'y colors. I'm not sure if I'm going to metallic the gold or go through using non-metallic effects to have the eagles and decoration look gold. But whatever I choose I'll have gold paint and some paint sealant! atm this thing is like gold dust xD I'm so afraid of the paint chipping.

... Why not to paint past your bed time I think I've just discovered...

Don't know if you can see very well but I epicly destroyed this... 2 more ordered for next week...

Weird though this one came out okay

No more painting past midnight for me :F
I think I painted the bolter arm in the wrong order to be honest, and I dunno paint was too thick also and I was trying to be smart using the palette from the other arm on the bolter arm to save paint and end up costing me more then 3 tubes of the stuff in replacement order. Never painted a boltgun before and its giving me problems. Unlike the human body/figure / miniature itself its really edgy in that it has so many different flat surfaces I don't know where to blend and highligh from / too. I could simply go with 'edging' which I see lots of people do but it doesn't look right to me :/

Ty he's definitely getting there. Funnily its the first model I've actually painted with vallejo paints and in this new method of layering and highlighting that doesn't use any drybrushing or inks and it's looking suprisingly good waaaaay better then the angry marine failure you can see there xD

I did mess up on the arms though, 2 new sets (just encase I do it again) Have arrived! Waiting on my new brushes to arrive which will also be real helpful! But I can't do any more on it just yet till I get my new hand drill so I can clear out the gun barrels and all that good stuff.

But there will be an update as soon as work on him starts up again

3rd time lucky! It took me 3 attempts to get the arms how I wanted them.. All thats left is the sword so tomorrow should see the models Gold features done and for it to be assembled ready for it to get its shoulder pads up done and ready!

I haven't used my new brushes as much as I'd of liked to yet, they will see use with the gold effects because of the small size of the features but at the moment I haven't felt any real need!

Oh I did do up some of the highlights to have a little practice with one though!

My use of metalics could do with some work (lol) but thankfully for the most part it will be blocked out by the great weapon arms that come across the body! Same for the skull in the middle feels a little rushed...

Update!

The arms are on!
More progress on the blood angels - blood tears chapter master. His arms are done and on though there are a few things that aren't here yet. Namely the ammo cartridge for his weapon as well as some other minor nicnacks

But here he is so far, the lighting is eh soso not that great so the flash has sharpened the color a little I think but yeah. I'll get more pictures in better lighting when its all done till then tho!

Blade of Bloodied Tears
Master Crafted, Powerful +1str, Graceful +d6 extra attacks, Laboured -1I, Power Weapon.
"A Power weapon of such ferocity, such anger and hatred. At the time of the Primarch of the blood angel's demise the very soul of the blood tears chapter master was torn asunder, bound into the endless fury of his blade granting it a power barely containable within the blade itself to the point that the psychic resonance is all that truly holds the burning force within its declining metalic confines."

A little collage nothing important. I realise where this went wrong - At the point of applying purity seals I realize this model became very camera unfriendly. Small imperfections in the sealing becomes extremely visible as well as a white snowey effect that I actually can't even seem to see when holding the model in my hand...

Any alternatives to purity seals would be very nice. A problem I seemed to have was I had seen other vallejo paint users seal there paint between various layers (all though I didnt) when I came to seal mine perhaps 2 or 3 times tops I've begun to notice that the model doesn't look very nice in photo's. As in the sealant is catching light and making itself very present -.-

England

Lol ok, its almost done just the backpack to go.
Few more shots of the new look, I hit it with some semi-gloss to remove the snowyness that the sealant had given it, its slightly shiny now which I'm at mixed opinions of at the moment, it looked best when it had neither sealant nor gloss on to be honest but its gotten rid of the snowyness. It looks perfectly fine in hand just my camera seems to pick up on the things I dont want >.<

I dunno, theres no such thing as a matte gloss? I think semi was the best I could get to repair the snow.

Yeah, the terminator head just looked a bit overly large so I ended up replacing it with one of the sanguin-priests ones because it was simply too big looking.

The downside is I'm not really enjoying how much of a sanguinary priest he looks now so I may end up just finishing him up and making him a captain and redoing him xD

True enough, I did the termi heads on normal marines when they came out and found it looked kind of froggish to. I think he would look cool with a non mk7 helmet though.
