The model is painted so freaking well, that base is a major, major letdown. Nearly raw cork? Just some tufts? Man, it is a display base. It needs more love!

I agree, very good painting, pedestal calls for a much more fundamental visual processing.

I don't see what the problem is with this base, i generally like more scenics but really in this one and the other post (sorry don't know the name ugh i'm terrible with wh terminology).

I quite like both models and they fit the environment perfectly, and focusses the attention to the model. I was just going to say i liked the base but this is more appropriate, awesome stuff.

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers.

It is mostly raw cork just glued down. Not exactly the most pleasing thing. A little ballast, sand, and some other details go a long way for display bases like this. If it was just a base for an army-wide thing, maybe easier to overlook. But this is clearly a showcase piece, the base needs way more love!

Exactly. For the display needs to be a little more thorough job. The painting is beautiful and the base should have the same level (which simply does not)

But is it more that the materials are not representative or that the scene is too simplistic? Would it be judged the same if the slabs were made out of better material but arranged in very similar fashion?

A little bit of both? I think had they been like plaster-cast stones, versus cork, I would have not been as off-put by the stark nature of it. On the other hand, a bit more love on the cork with ballast, sand, and bits and stuff, might have gone a long way to helping it. In that case, something with a bit of height would have helped too.
