OK, enough woolgathering, reflecting, and plotting and planning. Time for some paint!
Slow progress on the seer, and the base coats going down on the TDA captain. Not sure if I’m going to leave the strappy things white, or go with a leather look for them. Both seem like they might work.
I know it’s not much progress, but there have been a lot of distractions lately. But things should settle down and get on track soon-ish.

I’m still getting over this new fangled “plastic” in terminators, much less odd marks that and the bases. I am enjoying painting him up though. I should probably assemble his squad. Been a while since I took the clippers to sprue. Banging out 20 BaC tacticals did kinda burn me out on cleaning mold lines, but that was last year.
Got some more paint down on him this afternoon. Decided on brown leather for the strappy bits. Put a layer of red down on the cape. Plugging away. The one decision I still need to make is what to do with the shields on his belt and shoulders. Do I do something heraldric? s on blue? Just gold? Once I decide on that, the rest is just going through the motions.

Cloak is going to be red. From an army coherency POV, I’ve really got two choices, red or white. And while the adventurous side of me was thinking white, it was shouted down by my more reasonable side. I will try to give it a good depth of shading. Lots of nice hard folds on the cape that should highlight nicely.
No thoughts on the heraldic shields?

Interestiiiing. I agree with you on the red choice. I think the shields (on the shoulders atleasat - not sure if there are others) look cool in white and maybe some black Knightley-esque squiggle could work with the occasional 'u' or company marking, or maybe even the same with blue shield and white text. Personally i'm not sure how well gold would fly on such a large, plain surface.

A cubist representation of the BaC TDA captain, expressing both motion and the passage of time in a medium of of a still life.
(Sorry, a little modern art history leaking out)
He’s actually in more parts then that, but I put both the body parts together for the pic. Kinda fun how I can show you the front, back, and top of the mini all in the same picture. Hence the cubism comment. Although Picaso I am not.
But that’s where we stand, with just the rough basecoat. While I do think gold would work, and is the easy choice, I have to agree with LDP that they are probably a bit large to leave plain. I could use my micra pen to do squiggles/freehand, or draw some black heraldic work on the gold. While I’d be OK with quartering it in colors, or some other pattern, the fact that I’d want to get 3 the same frightens me a bit. Although if I could do the stupidly small shield on the company champion, I could probably manage here. Although I could probably do something like a “U” on one shoulder, some chapter number on the other, and leave the one on the belt blank.
I should probably see if my local hobby/craft store caries the crazy fine paint pens in white. And how well they cover, if they do. Would open up a wider world of squiggles. Because Emperor knows I’m not doing detail like that with a brush.
A quick note on confidence: I’m actually looking forward to all those folds and drapes in the cloak. Not that long ago it’s something I would have dreaded. Go progress!

Friday update time. Sorry no pics, as nothing major happened since the lat time.
Decided to go with the gold base for the shield. Will scribble something on them. Also put down the silver and a second clean up pass on the gold. Once that’s dry, I think it will be time for the brown wash. Put a few more coats down on the seer as well, haven’t forgotten him.

Some work, with a minor setback.
Mostly done painting:
I knew I was going to have to do some touchups once I had glued him together. Some problems doing that. When I was dry fitting him at the inital glue stage, it seemed like I could get by with glueing the chainfist on. There was enough flex to get the torso halves together with it in place. Unfortunately, once everything was painted, it was not going together easy. I has to cut out the arm, clean it up, and glue it back in. All the cuts are hidden, but it did cause some wear and tear on the good captain, which will need to be cleaned up. Not a big deal, but if anyone is copying my process, keep that in mind.
The other major issue is a paint change. I picked up a pot of drakenhof nightshade to replace my dwindling supply of blue ink. Not a good match.
Both minis are washed over macragge blue. The TDA captain is more flat, and lacks the brighter sapphire tones of Sicarius. Not quite happy with this. As all the BaC stuff is on different bases, it’s not the end of the world. There is not going to be a lot of mixing in squads. I can use my remaining blue ink for the handful of guys left on the bench. Or try to find an alternative. There is another blue glaze IIRC.

OK, went with the freehand black on gold. Turned out OK. Personal heraldry on one shoulder, and a XIII and “U” on the other. I think I’m just going to leave the belt plain, it looks OK as-is.
Could have been bit more tidy, particularly the roman numerals and the U. But at arm’s length it looks pretty good.

And that’s a wrap for the big guy. I like the way he turned out. I did a little bit of edge highlighting, not sure if it shows. Chainfist is the most obvious place, but I did some blues, and a touch on the golds.
Poor old guy will probably never see the table again. If I had thought about it at the time, I would have tried to incorporate his heraldry onto the new guy. Oh well. There may have been some scale creep over the last two and a half decades. I might have to re-jigger the shelf a little. This is the first 40mm base. The HQs have plenty of space, but when I get the squad done to back him up, they are going to need room
Speaking of which, I started to cut the BaC terminators off the sprues and sort them out. Primary build is going to be all lightning claws, but I’ll see how easy it would be to swap them. Mostly because I like the way all the options look. I’d consider buying more, but it would be totally extravagant. I’ve got better things to do with my hobby dollar.

Yeah, great stuff! To switch weapons on the BaC termies, you'd need to magnetise the arms and the shoulder pads.

Thanks guys!
I was afraid of that Para. Looking at the instructions for the BaC terminators, it seemed like I’d have to do something wth the shoulderpads. Was hoping I’d be able to just glue them on the body and swap the arms. Hadn’t got around to shuffling parts around to check though. But there is no way I’m doing multiple magnets per arm to swap them. Glue it is.
Did a little more work on the seer, he’s almost done. Need to do a final round out touch ups and glue him on his bike. Even though I did his bike last year, I don’t think I counted it, so he can count as 2 minis in 2016. Puts me a little behind for the year, but the winter is always a slow time. Mostly due my freezing basement. I guess I could break out a space heater if I needed to, but it seems wasteful.
Need to figure out what to do next.

And that’s the seer done. He’s got a spear and magic helmet to swap out if he wants to be a warlock or stab things better.
Workbench progress has seen all the terminators have their legs glued together and to the base, and the torso halves assembled. All clean of mold lines. Next step is to glue on the tabards and then clean and assemble the arms and heads
And paint something else. I might be able to get a 4th mini done for the month.

He’s 100% stock from the new seer on bike kit, sword included. You might not have seen the sword before because the spear is a no-brainer upgrade for 5 points. I love the fact that it has recessed runes on the blade. Just a little wash and my mostly steady hand and the detail pops out. Raised runes you need to be careful with the sides, do more clean-up, etc. Still trying to figure out what to paint next. I picked out some jetbikes to do, but I’m not feeling them. Might be because I moved 3 to the active area. Probably a mistake; more daunting that way. Feel like I should do a marine since I just finished an Eldar. Also in the news I finished putting together 5 lightning claw terminators. Can’t say I’m happy with how they chose to do the shoulder assembly. I get that the layered pad look is key to that mark of suit, but everything is just stacked up on the arms. Make it look like there are some glaring weak points in the protection. I’ll try to remember to grab a built shot next time I bring my camera down. No rush, spring is a long way out. I know it’s heresy era gear, but those are not the lightning claws you normally see on loyalists. Getting a Night Lord vibe off these guys. I’m sure a nice clean blue (lighting bolt free) paintjob will help sort them out.

Who’s who of the Ultramarines? OK, I have a lot of captains, many of them painted. But who’s who? There are plenty of sources for names, so lets try to associate them. I’m primarily going to stick with names from the TOE from the codexes, there are more out there if I wanted to dig a bit and widen my net. 1st Company, Regent of Ultramar. 2nd Company, Master of the Watch 3rd Company, Master of the Arsenal 4th Company, Master of the Fleet 5th Company, Master of the Marches 6th Company, Master of the Rites 7th Company, Chief Victualler 8th Company, Lord Executioner 9th Company, Master of Relics 10th Company, Master of Recruits Well that was a wall of text. Picture time! Right now I’m going to drag out old pictures. Once I get some names, I’ll snap some new ones and get them all neat and labeled. One of the first pictures I uploaded to Dakka: The circle grows: And waiting for paint on the left: And two on the right: <catches breath> I think this is getting to be a little long for one post. That’s the raw data I’m working with. There are a few historical notes which will influence the who’s who, but I can get into them later. Thoughts and opinions on who should head up what companies?
