Some bits arrived today to 'exodite up' my Raider as I thought it looked a little plain if I can't have dinos with AV values, what's the next best thing?

Bits of dinos strapped to vehicles of course!

Annoyingly the picture doesn't really show it to its full effect. It actually fits really nicely with the lines of the Raider definite improvement

Also, I think it's high time this thread gets moved to the plogs board. I'll give it a day so if anyone's watching they know where it's gone

Loving the raider, I did a similar thing with my older raiders and I can speak from experience that little things like that on raiders look amazing, and yours certainly is proof of that!

Thanks man the best part is that the Stegadon kit has two different head crests so the raider carrying my Grots will have a little variation

Thanks dude it does change the silhouette, but only slightly. It actually follows really nicely the curve of the front bulkhead, and the horns follow the prow closely too. Snagged a couple more pics to try and demonstrate that

Plus, the Stegadon kit has two different head crests which will give me some nice variation for my other Raiders when I get round to them

Well, i've finally sourced the bits to finish my succubus/Daughter of Khaine

The fluff is that due to the distance between the exodite worlds and the epicentre of the fall, only smaller shards of Khaine fell onto the maiden worlds. These shards formed ornate and archaic suits or armour that, when donned by a sacrificial exodite, imbues them with a portion of Khaine's martial prowess however, once the armour is worn, the exodite may never remove it. They become a living embodiment of khaine until the day they fall in battle, or the fire of Khaine's wrath consumes them and burns out their soul.

Basically a mini Avatar!

Yeah me neither it's a little out of my comfort zone to paint tbh (I can't remember the last time I didn't paint something that was brown/red/bleached bone!)

The plan is to paint the armour as I would an Avatar, so a dark silver (probably Leadbelcher with a wash), but then yellows, oranges and reds in the recesses so it seems like it's glowing with heat from within.

That's the idea at least.

Question is, what colour should I do the undersuit?

I do mine black, not only because it is incredibly easy but nobody will see it so it doesn't require much effort. Definitely something dark.

The glowing idea sounds really cool! It is an interesting idea that I think will look amazing.

A tip for the bone: I like doing a basecoat of GW Zandri dust, and then build the colour up with washes, wash the entire thing with a few coats of a thinned down Agrax Earthsade, then wash about have of the horn with a few coats of thinned down Seraphim sepia, and paint the tips with a few coats of thinned down Reikland Fleshade, just a thought!

Thanks guys

Yeah I was leaning towards black. I tried red on the previous one and didn't like it at all!

Thanks for the tip on the bone I'll give that a try once I've got the paints. Bonus points if I can apply the same technique to the stuff I've already painted so it looks uniform

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Well, I've thrown some paint on the Daughter of Khaine must get a better camera. Can't really see the glowing bits :S relatively happy with it, although I must say I'm not nearly as good of a painter as I picture in my head!

Not sure if you can see it from these pictures, but I've painted the exposed skin on the feet as if it's blackened and charred, and the wraithbone arm as if its beginning to char from where it meets the armour.

Trying to put my finger on why I'm not that keen on it though...

I don't think it fits with the gold/red/brown aesthetic of the rest of the army. Maybe that's a good thing given the fluff, but would it look better with a thinned layer of Runelord Brass on the armour and the undersuit painted a really dark brown?

Oh, I discovered I had some Kroot models I made ages ago and never got round to painting. I've always liked Kroot, so I though I'd try out the laziest painting method I've ever tried on it just laid down a base layer and put a wash over the whole thing. I actually quite like it

Would make a nice little mercenary force alongside my exodites with a Kroot squad and a Shaper/counts as Cadre Fireblade

Daughter of Khaine is looking good. I especially like how the bone arm came out and distinguishes itself from the rest of her. Maybe highlight he hair with some yellow to make it look "hotter" for some extra depth perhaps? Cameras tend to bleed colours out but did you give the hair a wash at all too? That could help add depth too. Not too sure unfortunately at the moment on what to do with the silver armor if you're not keen on it. I find metallic very hard to add much depth to so I try to avoid using too much of them when I can. Sorry I'm not a very big help.

That kroot looks good, some models take very well to just a simple base and wash technique to paint them, I believe the kroot models are in that group, much like plaguebearers.

Both models look good though, keep it up.

Thanks man yeah I've washed the hair, and done a little highlight with the original colour. Good idea doing a bit of a drybrush of yellow to make the hair look hotter.

The metal looks ok in person, but it just doesn't fit that well with the rest of the army. Making it a little bronze might alleviate that

There should be a list of models that work well with washes for lazy painters like myself

Looking good as always Ynnead!

I can see a bit of a glowing effect on the leg, but its very faint.

The issue might lie with the colour, the metal + dark red is very knight-ey and although that fits the aesthetic, magma is very hard to pull off, and dark magma is even more difficult.

Maybe a dark brown with really intense orange highlights? I actually don't know as I am somewhat inexperienced with OSL and fiery stuff.

Another thought, an awesome lazy model are the Fenrisian Wolves, I did mine with just a wash and a drybrush.

where am I? *looks around* Well i'm...errr...I...I...don't know!

These are really really cool conversions. Quite distinct and unlike anything I've ever seen. Well done.
I think the raider would look better and less raider-y if you got rid of the ram so that it was just the horns left. This would also give the silhouette more of a charging beast vibe which seems like it would suit.
Really good, and Your painting looks like its improving as you go too, it's a slow process and hard to see yourself, but its definitely coming along.

Thanks man yeah I'd describe this foray into OSL as 'a random stab in the dark'

Since then I've gone over the armour with some Runelord Brass and a bit of a wash, and the black with some drybrushed dark brown of some sort and it certainly fits better with the rest of the army which I'm happier with. Has masked the glowey bits even more though! :S

Good shout on the Fenrisian wolves anything with nicely sculpted fur or feathers is an ideal candidate for lazy painting

Thanks a lot man!

Yeah agreed on the Raider prow front. I did try it without the prow when I was putting it together but it didn't look right. Perhaps it will now that the horns are in place.

I suppose I could always stick it back on if it doesn't look right

Thanks a lot for the positive comment about the painting that's the bit that I'm least confident about tbh. It's definitely a case of being able to picture exactly what I want in my head but when it comes to putting it down it rarely meets my expectations.

Glad to know I've made a little progress though!

Spent this evening having a second go at making my Archon honestly, I can say that the Dark Eldar have the most stunning model range in the whole of 40k. Really beautiful sculpts.

Perched upon a spur jutting over the battlefield, he closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. The sharp tang of blood filtered through his jaded olfactory nerves and he drank in the carnage below.

Below him, the belated reinforcements were arriving. Spying the remains of the XIth scattered across the valley, the Commissar bellowed his orders. With a crackle of interference, the cloaked figure tested his pet Haemonculus' latest whimsy.

Booming from the platoon's vox-casters, an alien voice declared in broken Gothic: "I am Khaharkyth the Carrion Lord. Look upon my artworks and despair!"

As the final guttural syllables were echoing in the air, the Archon tipped forwards and dove off the precipice. With a sickening crunch he landed square on the shotgun-brute below, cracking its spine beneath an armoured knee. The Commissar spun around, power sword buzzing into life.

"My soul-trap is hungry, plaything." the vox-casters echoed.

Bracing his sword, the Commissar charged...

Also, from this day forward the little skull attached to his shoulder-pad will be known as 'Wilson'

Great job on the Archon dude. I never was a fan of the Bruce Willis head it comes with, that helmet is a marked improvement.

Yeah I've never been a fan of the head or the crossed arms that come with the Archon kit, and blank-face Reaver helmets are the best helmets around

Now I've just got to decide how to paint him. It's a toss-up between a ruddy brown for the undersuit and Runelord Brass armour, or an undecided undersuit with Leadbelcher armour (washed with the Nuln Oil I've picked up in the Black Friday sales).

Ideas?

I vote for the leadbelcher armour as runelord brass and a brown undersuit are both paints with brown pigment in them, they'll colour match too well and offer little contrast on the table (when viewed from 3 1/2 feet away as you most often see models from this distance while playing). Just my two cents.

Lotta love for your Archon, what a centrepiece! He's so dynamic.

Your mini avatar is a great idea too. I don't envy you the task of the paint job on that. One of the hardest paint jobs I ever did was my avatar (you can check my gallery if you like) its so hard to paint something luminous in the cracks, its like painting in reverse or something. So don't beat yourself up over it. Its a really hard thing to do well. (I did not consider my own attempt "done well") But anyway, the conversions on both are, as ever, superb!

Ps: love the Kroot, simplicity is king.

Yeah good point. Plus, they'd probably blend in too well with my craftworlders and exodites which would have been alright if my Corsairs wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb if that was the case.

Thinking about it, I was happy with my old Daughter of Khaine when I'd started with Leadbelcher and then washed on a thin layer of black with a dab of gloss. Isn't that pretty much what Nuln Oil is?

I still really like them, but thought I'd be happier to get the more technobarbarian units done first

So, while I'm waiting for some bits to turn up I threw together some Corsair Voidstorms.

Thought I'd go for Kabalite legs and Dire Avenger bodies to give them a little more bulk compared to the Reavers. Harlequin swords for Venom Blades and a Shredder to keep them nice and cheap rounds out the unit nicely
