Not sure it has to be yellow?

Indeed it does not. Just has to be a Mantis Warrior in some kind of recognizable color (or colour).

Just in case you guys think I'll never get back to painting. I just arranged to buy a bio-titan (second-hand but unbuilt) along with the IA book to go with it from one of the guys at the club (Wargamer Shawn from the video actually).

The IA book, Alphion or something project, he listed is outdated. Good story though. The nid rules have all been updated with the newest IA Apocalypse and GW Apocalypse books. The Hierophant can be found in the GW Apocalypse book. Also the weight of the model isn't kind to his spindly legs...or should I say the talons. Mine has an Iron rod in the center to support the model.

I'll keep that in mind WyFox... thanks. I'd like to do a non-solid base... maybe a pad of some sort at the base of each leg so it can pass over objects (terrain, other models, etc.). I think it would look a lot cooler that way. Perhaps I can hide some stiff wire supports underneath some of the legs that will support the weight of the model on their own.

This thing starts the weekend? I might have a go for a laugh if thats ok? You lot are well out of my league, but I like a challenge and the fun of competition.

One mantis warrior marine, on a 40mm base to match your base!? Right?

It's nice to be back nerdy. I've missed it. Just needed a break from the grind. I'm not painting yet, but as the competition will necessitate it... it's as much to get my arse back in gear as it is to give you guys a way to entertain yourselves for a bit.

Be delighted to have you on-board Cam. The creativity aspect of the comp should be right up your alley.

I have an idea for what to do but before I start I wanted to ask, is our figure going to only be in a single set place on the display base, or are we going be able to design for anywhere on the base, such as behind the enemy marine?

interesting idea, Gits'. I shall have to give it some thought and see if I can come up with something. I do still need to add a Mantis Warrior to my army.

40mm, that's terminator sized right?

Terminator sized,
Mantis,
Warrior,
To fight a marine... hmm... Research time.

@HFL: There will be a given spot on the base for each marine, BUT... I will also put mine on an insertable base so it can be spun to match whatever direction makes the most sense.

@Dr H (and everyone else): Keep in mind I'm just doing the terminator-sized base to give people the most flexibility and figure choice and posing. The figure most definitely does not need to be a terminator-sized figure... and indeed that might not be the most appropriate match for the figure I design.

Can i get an answer to this?

By the start of the competition I will have this sorted out.

My current through is that it would easiest if everyone has their figure up off the ground on some sort of small elevated platform. Can be any style but should cover the 40mm base entirely, that way you don't have to worry about matching my basing materials or style. I'll make the rest of the base generic enough that it'll match with nearly anything. (rock, platform of some sort, etc.)

So I guess I don't quite understand the 40mm requirement. Is everyone going to send you their models? Other then using our minds eyes, how are we going to really know how well they line up in the duel and whatnot?

Greenscreen in the answer. If everyone uses a classic goblin green base, a quick trip to photoshop will magically transfer the mini to whatever the diorama has in store.

(I joke. Or do I? )

I see only one teensy flaw in that plan. The majority of the entries will be armoured in green!

Photoshop may not be a bad idea though provided we have someone who is more proficient than I at cropping pictures without a bunch of jagged edges and whatnot..

1. The 40mm base is just so I can cut the correct size hole in my display base for everyone's figure. If people don't like that, I can make it a 25mm base. I just though 40mm would give folks more options. There will be space between the two figures so they don't have to line up exactly.

2. You don't... we'll all just have to use our I-M-A-G-I-N-A-T-I-O-N-S. (a-la Sponge Bob and Patrick playing in the TV box)

3. When the hell did you become a MOD WM??? I just noticed it! Congrats buddy!

I suppose another idea would be to say that basing doesn't matter at all, and it will be up to the winner to figure out how to attach their figure to the diorama. I"m open to suggestion.

OH, and I"m considering putting it comp off for just a few days so that it runs nice and neat through August. July 27th was a fun idea as it commemorates the b-days of more than one dakkanaught... but it might be easier on everyone if there was a few days more before things got rolling.

OK folks, I had a bit of an inspiration on the way home from work today.

There will be some modifications to the contest that will solve or simplify some of the issues that people have brought up. More on that later... For now, hang tight and keep your minds and options open!
