They're looking brilliant! They are looking awesome as a group!
Two questions...
How did you achieve the glow effect around the eyes?
And what paints did you use on the bases? Including the rim? It's grown on me tremendously!

Thanks Hoe:
Your ?s...
For the eyes. I used a p3 turqoiuise which I prefer to gw paints because they keep their pigment even when reallyyy watered down. So with said paint a paint the lens and a bit out side of the lens...with the solid color. Then I begin to glaze many layers of the watered down pigment around the eyes focusing the pooling water to mostly around the eye so the glow is strongest closest to its source. In between these glazes ill paint in the Turqoiuse plus white for the "eyes" and highlight the bottom edge and top edge (less so) of the eye lens. Ill continue to add white to this step and repeat it as I add more glaze to create the glow as the glaze will pull back the highlight. The final step is a strong close to white edge hi light of the bottom edge of the lens.
The base rim is a 50/50 war boss green/warp stone green
Brown texture paint and terminatus stone dry brush. Plus gw grass.
Hope that helps!!

Wassup Dev. I see you are busy making a giant chaos mech and those awesome bases youre puttting on the marines. I know im making good progress with these guys eh?
NP Hoe Yeah for some reason i felt totally compelled to do a really stock standard GW base. Its really tidy. I do like it!
Another quick update. 9 done. Finished the plasma gunner tonight. Pretty happy with it. Tried not to spend too long at one sitting, so i pushed through. There a few things on this one i want to smooth over but they are very minor. The face definitely needs some tlc and honestly is far from done. Theres a few extra glazes needed to strengthen the osl in a few spots. But minors.. Sorry for mega zoomed in pixelated pics but heres the 9th...
hope ya like.

Thanks San, likewise and I have to agree, In terms of pose, those two are my favorites as well. This guy more so. A bit more dynamic even. He just refilled his ammo and his twisting to sight his prey! And i think instead of going with the all mighty giant glow cel...i went with the more active one...create a good motion to the model i think... As far as painting is concerned, hes my least favorite basically because im unhappyish with the face. So i have to fix it. But the plasma came out how i wanted and thats the focus of this model anyways.

Thanks Hoe and Snrub!
Alright, the first squad is finished!! Which is good because my edge highlighting filbert is shot. Time for a new brush. :( Im very pleased with these fellows and cannot wait for a a full army of these dudes!!! So cool. I didnt add the missle launcher to this squad, ill probably do two out of the next batch. But first i need to get to building a strong and suitably sharky list. Any advice??
And without further ado, heres a pile of silly pix of:
Reef Squad

Brother Tauna (Plasma)
Brother Kai
Brother Kahua
Brother Akamai
Brother Hakuna
Brother Kauina
Brother Luani
Brother Kekune

Plans for a transport of some sort? What points level are you looking to play? And what kind of theme, for that matter?
Anyways, I do like them. I'd repaint the hell out of those rims, but otherwise it's a super solid job on a super basic scheme. Are you going to add squad markings when the get the chapter logo? It's very helpful in game when you get into a multi unit assault to know who goes where.

Yeah definitely. Ive had a somewhat change of heart and would love to the old space shark icon, but ill have to make my own decals and we will see how that goes. As for squad marks, yes, i agree, and im going to wait until i get the logos on before i add more detail. But there will be squad markings.
As for the list...

I love your take on the Sharks! They are one of my favorite chapters and you definitely nailed the look of them especially the red helmet stripes. That always makes me think of Rogue Trader era Marines and that's never a bad thing. How did you paint the metal part of the power packs? I really like the look of it and would like to try that on some Mechanicum stuff.
Why are you printing your own transfers for the chapter icon? I've always wanted to try printing my own decals but never tried. Please be sure to post your results if you don't mind, it might save me a great deal of wasted time and money if you have good results.

Awesome work BB, the weathering on the power armour is gorgeous, and the skin tones on the faces is top notch. Does need something to break up the grey though - maybe the squad markings and chapter symbol is the answer?

@ Cam: Thanks man. Ha! I havent really played a SM army before but they always looooose to my IG. Good thing im not a sore loser
@ Brush: Glad you dig it brush. Im linking my stubble tutorial to your plog.
@ San: Thanks, and this:
is a filbert:
Though most guys dont use these, they are actually my work horse brush. Its a bit wierd because the paint can dry faster but ive learned how to work with these and its just what im comfortable with. The bigger brushes for basecoats and blending on larger surfaces. Everything else is with that or smaller.
@Ephrael: Thanks and I want to make decals from the old spaceshark logo. Which you cant buy anywhere. So my only option is to make them. If they come out poorly ill use the newer icon which i can buy from FW. I will definitely blog about it here.
@Ruglud: Thanks Its been suggested by many, but, I will be keeping them monochrome as im quite pleased with that look and the color scheme is nice and tight. More colors will clutter it up when they are en masse. But exactly as you say, the chapter logo will serve to do that subtly, so i do always appreciate the suggestions and feedback!
@360. Any points list. Ill collect this army for a while, BIG! Plus, ill use the chapter tactics.
@Monkeytroll: Thanks dude! And i am MOST certainly going to use the old school rogue trader fw ML. How can i not??
So, since ive been asked a few times, and its been commented on, about my chipping techniques or whatever, i thought id make a tutorial on how i do it!! Finally!! welll....i guess here we go, and by the way im making this into a actual tutorial here so you can go back to it easily. that link is here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/587941.page
So....::
Bebops Tutorial on.....
Firstly, i Think this information is available elsewhere and its nothing new and my way is simply my way, not maybe the best and certainly not the only.
So the top picture here is the piece we will chip and weather. Ive included 3 colors just so you see how its done and some obvious shapes and text to weather as well.
Notice that that those details and rivet shading has already been done before i weather and chip said item. (Yes my sharks still dont have their chapters logos, which is not ideal, but this is a hurdle im confident will not be an issue.)
Step One.
Have prepared model to weather.
Step Two (Skip to Step 3 if you dont have decals/logos you want weathered)
Take your Sponge (a small one is best for tiny minis. But experiment! )
And dab the base colors first (sorry no pic). In this case its Dawnstone, Black, and Warpstone Green. After letting the paint dry a bit on the sponge, i dab freely the sponge onto the piece, focusing on icons i want to pull back if there are any.
Step Three
AFter that, take your chip mix, which is a mix of dryad bark and black.. looks like this...
And dab around piece in the ssme fashion as step 2, this time focusing on edges and places where wear happens more. etc etc.
At this point we have this.
Now notice a couple things. This is ALL the sponge work. It will make your model look dirty grimy. Almost like its had an oil wash. You can look that up. It really adds more than just the chips. Theres now some depth and almost rust to it.
Step Four (optional)
I take my very tiny detail brush which i will use mostly from now on...
and i use the same chip mix and add a few extra bits of damage as i see fit, scratches and what not. Its more just for fun. Or if i want more weather or gashes or etc etc. The looks like so...
subtle but its there.
Step Five
Now we are going to start highlighting the chips. And ill start on the grey side. For dawnstone i used a mix of Administratum Grey and White. Its somewhat random but i kinda let my eye just find the chips and bigger scratches. You are going to highlight the bottom edge of the chips you see. a little slash. Feel free to have fun and add extra scratches and chipped paint with the hight light color too. Experiment with too much, too little. Youll find your groove. On the edges i kinda make a "nununununununuunununu" motion wth my edge highlight and it creates the effect of unevenness and chips and scratches. I mind the drk brn chips as well to give me more shape and the occasional bent line. When you are done you should be like so:
Next i build highlights and add even sharper whiter slashs and chips to the bigger and more pronouced chips...Then we have this:
Finally i go pure white and and sharpen the nastiest or brights or sometimes just random, chips...as well and add a slash of almost black to the deepest grooves as well. This will create an uneven depth to each scratch. Some bigger etc etc...The final effect for the grey is this....
Notice also i used the same grey for the black.
For the Green, i did the exact same steps, ill just show the pics and the colors used... MY CHIP MIX IS ALWAYS THE SAME OF 50 / 50 BLACK PLUS DRYAD BARK, NO MATTER WHAT BASE COLOR
FOR THE GREEN SIDE
Step 6 (optional)
For my marines, i made a mix of brackwater, a dirty wash of my chip mix, and put several layers of it on the feet. In this case, i put it on the lower 3rd of the model and blended it up. Its just made it look a bit more grimy. DO NOT USE WASHES for this. They will leave a film. I Prefer to always use actual paints for glazes, not the inks, washes, or glazes they make. Anyways, its kinda to simulate a subtle (in this case very) oil wash. Again google that. And finally youll end up with something like this...
Jeez, that took a while! Longer to make this tut, by far. I have no idea if itll help you guys...but its the way i did my marines!
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-47942-40127_Space%20Sharks.html
My Kroot were done this way but without the sponge. I simply painted the scratches on. Tidy and more comicbook like.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-47942-37931_**Kroot%20Rebel%20Alliance%20Showcase.html
Hope it helps you guys!!
Cheers
