The Void Generators:

The top deck houses the Void Generators of which there are four.

Since the rear ones cannot be seen unless the model is disassembled I saw no reason to make the two rear generators until I decided to make an interior. So I suppose I need to make two more.........

http://i.imgur.com/3qXGeSk.jpg

The generator deck breaks down to five interlocking components are is accessible from either the upper gallery of the Command Deck or from the Hood. The interior of the housings are painted a nice bilious green which seems to glow for some reason.........

http://i.imgur.com/Yi1UTmc.jpg

The forward doors fold down on hinges for maintenance access and removal of the Void Generators...........

The interior walls with roof attached lock in place to the rails on the center main hull ceiling............

The rarefied atmosphere

have you decided on the overall colour of the titan, black?

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Probably not black, perhaps multiple shades of grays and blues.

Conduit Collars:

You always have to be on the look out for interesting bits of scrap such as the subject of this post; conduit collars.

It would be pretty tedious to make collars to ring the penetration points where the large electrical conduits enter the housings; in this case the Reaver head jowls. Leaving these plain give an unfinished look to the area besides the more detail the better.

http://i.imgur.com/HyMYDR5.jpg

Fortunately I have had this idea for quite a few years and have mentioned it before but it doesn't hurt to re-introduce it.

http://i.imgur.com/EYrG2lv.jpg

When you cut large holes in styrene using wood hole augers you get these nicely shaped rings that are roundly beveled inside and out but usually get swept away with the refuse. These make dandy collars with a minimum of cleaning and sanding.

http://i.imgur.com/VayG0C3.jpg

The image above shows the clooars glued in place before the final cleaning and I believe they add a nice touch to an ordinarily bland area.

I have used these extensively on most of my models even as just tchotchke decorations.

I've always built plastic models at least as long as I can remember. The first model I built was Revell's USS Missouri.

From there I graduated to balsa RC aircraft but I was more interested in building than flying so I always put in more detail than required. RC aircraft have a tendency to fall out of the sky at inopportune moments so I gave that up for wood plank on frame shipbuilding. Building the hulls masts and sails was fun but I hated rigging which I equate with knitting so I lost interest in that.

About ten years ago my son got the 40K bug so we started building the IG Russ tanks etc. It was then that I discovered FW resin Superheavies. I finally won a bid on ebay for a really decrepit Baneblade which I prise apart, repaired, cleaned, and restored. About 5 years ago I discovered plasticard and started scratch-building..... Plasticard is a much easier medium to work with than wood so I've found my niche.

When I first started building FW Titans what impressed me most about them was the wealth hidden FW detail. It took a lot of searching to find what the bottom of the Warhound head, waist and feet looked like and I wanted to replicate that detail

It was surprising to me how ordinary the soles of the FW Reaver were. Since A.M. and 40k in general decorate everything with skulls, aquila, Tech 'T's, and banners why not something special on the pads of the God Machine?

'sides, I can use the practice.

Thanks for sharing this, as well as this monumental project. I have literally just discovered the concept of scratch building in the last week and have been absolutely knocked off my feet. The engineering acumen you display is beyond my ability to even appreciate fully--mechanically speaking, I can barely glue together a plastic Land Raider Kit. When I first saw the plasticard substructure of my first scratch-built model a few days ago (and I actually still don't really have a grip on what plasticard is, or how you are manipulating it as you do--with clothes pins and so on...) I thought "Well that looks lame. Where's the detail?" To watch the project develop and through perseverance to grow into something unique and better than the original really blew my mind. Now, THIS project, of course, is on a whole other level...even from the Thunderhawk, which is incredible. Forget Forge World's other designer; they should be trying to hire YOU to design the Warlord Titan! (You basically already have)

In order to try to contribute something relatively meaningful to this thread besides adulation, however, I would like to readdress the issue of your first table top impression of Dirty Harry being "meh." I think that the issue is scale, pure and simple. There is no other model this big, and so it's very difficult to compare it. Obviously (and others have said this here on the thread), the initial reaction is going to be "Holy Poodoo, that thing is huge!" After that, I think the real joy for others--I would love to see this in person, for one--is going to be getting close to it, and taking advantage of time and all those magnetized panels you've installed and all the incredible detail you've poured into the interior to examine it. No doubt being delighted and amazed time and time again. So, I guess my argument is that the initial, across-the-room impression of this model is not the be-all end-all, and getting close to it is going to be totally necessary.

Secondly, I think painting is vital here, because I think that with so much (again, an issue of scale) space, on the greaves, for example, but also in many locations, the eye is going to need something to break it up. The recent Imperial Knights have tons of areas like that--large decals (which I'm not suggesting you use necessarily), horizontal hazard stripes in bright colors, and...bright colors in general. This draws one's eye to different areas of the model, and again would invite viewers to come take a closer look. So, I think it can't be judged at all until it's fully painted, and even then a photograph isn't going to do it justice.

It's awesome to see how this has developed and continues to evolve, and also to read that you have evolved along with this hobby. Again, as a relatively new hobbyist, I am inspired, and excited to see that there is so much more possibility--enough to last decades. So, thanks for the encouragement to stick with something one enjoys, and to continue to grow and develop in terms of skill and broaden the horizons of what is possible in terms of creativity.

Sorry to have been so long in responding especially to such a well worded reply but the Warlord is only one of my current projects and I will be a few weeks before I get back to it.

Such a lengthy and well articulated post deserves special mention and I appreciate the sentiment.

Thank you, EB

I am contributing nothing but adulation. This is wonderful. IT is far from "meh" and I wish to high heaven I could see it in person once its done to longingly look over all those details you've put in.

I Really Feel Badly: (Truly)

I'm constantly implored to accept commissions to duplicate my work but the nature of the effort being every part handmade and unique I cannot acquiesce. Primarily because no one would be able to afford paying for the amount of time necessary to manufacture one of these projects. Were I to bring these down to a level were they would be reasonably priced I would be working of far less than minimum wage.

So the best I can do is demonstrate my procedures and hope that those sufficiently motivated can reproduce the items for themselves.

Here we have stage two of the Reaver toes, no big deal, just three pieces of plasticard glued to a base.

After all I managed to recreate My Warlord Luteus Vexant from half a dozen images I found on the internet.

Man, that's a nice sentiment, but don't sell yourself short. Your vision, dedication and skill are all top notch! I am just enthused that you have stuck with it, and am so impressed with the final product!

It's a labour of love, that's obvious, and so it's not about the money. And in terms of time, I hope it's as satisfying to you to see the project come together as it is to us (out here on the interweb) to see it developing.

Thanks again for sharing.

Other than making it somewhat in accord with the War Griffin Warhound with muted Steely blues and grays I have not decided on a colour scheme but I definitely won't be painting the head yellow.

All those garish colours and designs are okay for the cute little titans like Warhounds and Reavers especially for the more ornate Mars Pattern Titans which seem to look rather better painted up in heraldry. but I can't picture 'Luteus' done up like a 'party favor'; he needs a more somber look

I have a more stately theme in mind.

Bear in mind that Epic Lucius Warlords are tiny figures and although they represent monstrous machines the size is not conveyed by the scale. When you have a 2/3 meter tall model the extravagant colouring tends to detract rather than augment the menacing quality giving it a clown like appearance.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

Winterdyne I shall be drawing on your abilities abundantly.

Can Someone Help Me Find My Dog?

In the land of the blind the one eyed are kings. Well that philosophy won't do me any good 'cause my dog is blind too.

I spent the morning reviewing youtube mech painting and I have come to the conclusion that it seems no one has trod this path before.

So I went back to a few Jaro tutorials and decided to work off of the Forgefiend video.

His accent is a bit thick but I got AV German Grey and I have to assume it's Model Air

Yesterday I forego-ed his recommended acrylic black base coat because I don't have to spend 20 buck$ on tiny vials of black paint when I can paint the entire Warlord for a couple of dollars worth of generic spray can Flat Black.

Today I airbrushed German Grey center highlights on the toes and tread patterns and the Ad Mech lcon under the foot pad???? (What Was I Thinking!!!!)

http://i.imgur.com/VIplvOj.jpg

Okay so the effect I'm going for is that originally this titan was a steely grey-blue and over the millennia the original factory paint and clear coat has worn, burned and rusted off so all that's left is a hint of former colour showing through the accumulated grime, leaking oil and rust. It won't be a Dave Smith camouflage so much as an Earl Scheib $19.95 special (Ask your fathers).

Hooray! It is indeed an historic day!

Going back to your discussion of heraldry, have you considered using some of the Imperial Knight decals? They'd be tiny, but in certain sections, they could be effective in creating some effects that jive with your desire for a "sombre" tone.

Beyond that, I think it's very smart to use primers and airbrush--it's basically a fortress. It walks, but it's a fortress. So, all the detail and texture you have on it are going to be great, and so drybrushing-ish techniques are really what I would be going for.

Hmm my instant email alert must not be working on this thread, sorry to have missed your replies for so long.

The finished titan images will be posted on this forum probably sometime in this century with any luck.

Decals I have to experiment with as I have become aquainted with a new (To Me) technique from 'Jaro' (Who Else?) that I am anxious to try.....

Meanwhile:

Department of the Interior:

More like the Department of Redundancy Department because I had already done this once but I was never satisfied with the Holo-dome display, first it was too large and the ground looked fake and uninspired so a new attempt was in order and I just returned from my daily 10K walk brimming with new ideas for the cockpit interior as well.

First I repaired the head and added the flex conduit, I plan to paint the mechanical sections later today probably black metallic and bronze highlights

http://i.imgur.com/Npp5rqC.jpg

Next the interior cockpit forward console (Lower left foreground will be upgraded with wiring and conduit. and be ready to be installed with the twin Moderati pilots seated.

Something I've been wanting to tell you since I started archive-binging this thread- Those "Pistons" you couldn't figure out on the legs? They're drive shafts, going into massive transmissions- because transferring all the power you'd need to rotate one of those joints with cabling or hydraulics would be silly.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

That's an interesting premise but driveshafts still need some sort of differential or gearbox and some sort of power source. That is why I proposed nuclear power for the energy source. One thing I have neglected to install are steam powered turbines to generate the massive amounts electricity needed to drive the transducers.

I decided that the huge open room behind the cockpit would serve better as the turbine room with one or two dynamos supplying the electricity that runs the machinery.

I picture the current going to servo motors and each joint having motors as some prototype electric cars have supplying the motive power and the large knee discs being giant flywheels and through a system of clutches and brakes supplying the walking impetus all of which controlled by "fly by wire" computers similar to the flight controls on modern aircraft.

Thanks for the suggestion.

After re-reading the above explanation I second that expression Elnibbus.

My beloved and antique "Märklin" technical building set has a solution to offer that could directly move those pistons. Part of it is an electro-magnetic coil with a piston in it. Under current, the piston is pulled through. Turning the current's direction pulls it into the other direction. While you can build an electro motor, transforming the linear movement into rotation via krank axle including a circuit breaker, there are instructions how to use the linear force as it is. Why transform a rotating movement into linear movement, when you can apply linear movement directly?

Linear actuators? that's basically just an electric piston (as opposed to steam or hydraulics or pneumatics). The thing is, you don't necessarily want to produce the force at the joint itself on a vehicle like this- instead, you want all the delicate power-generating bitz in one central, heavily armoured place that can be easily accessed for control and repairs, and then transfer that force out via mechanical means- that's actually what Hydraulics are- you have the hydraulic pump which turns energy into force via the pressure of the fluid, then you just 'gate' that force into the parts you want to move.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

I actually used a brake clutch assembly such as I described on an automated dough divider/rounder in Cheektowaga NY to double the size of the bread scaling, the working pressure the machine developed was 2800 psi. the machine cycled 30 to 60 pieces per minute. It worked at 60ppm but the hopper was too small to maintain the rate. If the hopper was overfilled it choked off the dough supply and the piston cavitated.
