Thanks H. And the same. All grey with a small amount of red and blue osl...with alot of weathering, chips, oil wash.

I will be using Tyberus the red wake though, and as the chapter master, ill be painting him to a much higher level and his armour will be NMM high gloss red. With a tiny bit of grey and his claws will be big time blue osl.

np damo also let me know when your package gets there. i gave you a tiny little surprise too so i think youll find it ...fun...or silly...or both.
and the pics, its an iphone cam. its good at picking out detail but bad at color recognition so it invariably deletes some of the blemding tones to cope, not good for minis but its so fast and just snaps a totally sharp pic in like a second.

Hey guys. A very tiny update here, but im currently waiting for my Marines to arrive in NYC along with some tools i needed to ship over here from la to continue work on them. So theres a small hiatus before i start painting up another few squads. Expect a big supply drop in the next few weeks But before then, i thouht id work on a bigger model and finecast is something i havent worked with yet. So im gonna paint up this fellow here.

Should be fun. Im not sure yet whether to go with traditional skin tones or do something really strange wth him. Maybe like a sea ogre type thing....yeah i donno. Also not sure if ill paint him in NMMs or use regular metals as theres alot of metal on this guy. Thats a pretty daunting task right there to do in NMM and pull it off. I think that may be out of my reach...we will see.
Also, found Ultramar in canada. Quebec to be exact.:p

Anyways, hope you guys are doing well! Loving everyones work.
Cheers

I vote for sea ogre greenish skin with super rusty metals. Don't think I've seen you do that before.

Brillow, i stand corrected. They are liners...not filberts. A filbert is a flat brush...i never use those. heh. As far as brand, the ones i prefer are Micron Dynasty series. But can only be ordered online. If youre lucky youll find some in good shape princeton's at the local blick or utrecht. Just go to the store and look for short fat handled 0/20 liners. That should point you in the right direction...

Hey fellas. Ive got the first WIP pics to post on this guy today. needless to say, im really going to take my time on this one. Theres alot of learning to do here and these first pics are very early wip of the arm. I wasnt entirely sure what colors to use, and in my head i couldnt really see what i wanted to do either so i kinda just started experimenting. At first i wasnt happy but i decided to keep going and i am starting to like whats going to on. Its a bit greener than i anticipated but it strengthened the bioshock look i had in mind so i went with it. Besides, in my mind, it was sorta of a tie whether i wanted to go the blue route or the green route. The green won, haha. There's still a lot of blue in the mix so i don't think it comes across orky...i mean it could be ork flesh no doubt but yeah...well...what do you guys think..

(Super Wip of flesh tones)

theres also a bit of red/brown in the shade mix so thats what you're seeing in the recesses...As you can see the base flesh color is quite blue...thats his face, untouched so far...Also, i decided against NMM on this model. I really want to gte a realistic rusted brown underwater, bioshock kinda vibe and i dont the the cartoony-ness of a nmm would have suited my vision.
Anyways, Cnc Appreciated!

OH-I Wanna get out of here

I do think it looks a bit orky at the moment. Maybe a bit more pallid looking, more yellowy brown? I think it looks very good, don't get me wrong there, just a suggestion (I'm never shy with those )

Not where I should be

Looks great, but......

Yes bit orky, I would go to rotting flesh, lighten it up, maybe add a little more blue.

Can't believe I am trying to give you tips on painting.!

My point would be, have a look at Nerdy's orks lately, more fleshy than green, well go that way but blue instead of pink.

Nice chipping tutorial. Also, more currently, I really like the green arm. Its dark and subtle shading make it look beautiful. Nice job!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yes, very orky. I didn't notice at first given my predilection for orks. I thought the whole universe was supposed to be green.

Thanks guys.
i agree with you all, but i also partially think the only way for it not to remind you its orky, is really for it to be blue. Its a sea green now and i havent finished highlighting it. There will be more aqua in the highlight.

Cam what do you mean, go blue instead of pink? Nerdys orks are much more olive than this color here. Are you refering to the elbow? If so that could be a cool idea. hmmm, youve got me thinking....Oh, and, suggesting i look at nerdys models is always sound advice

Not where I should be

In my head I was thinking about this guy.
Spoiler:

I agree his greens are a bit more olive, but the way he has the flesh tones running into it on this guy, could you do a similar effort with blues.

Think I will be quiet now,

I think Cam is talking about how NF uses flesh tones to highlight the ork skin from the green base, and is suggesting you use a light blue (or aqua as you mention it) to highlight the green.

As Nerdys Orks are a fleshy-green, your's will be a blue-green. But that seems to be what you are aiming at now anyway.

Damn, damo painted his balls off on that one. I love that model. No its not a bad idea at all...i have to think on it...but its a sound idea...but requires some strategy. Also just FYI, whats painted really is almost the totality of visible flesh on the model. Aside from his face....

Ah yes i see. It is in fact what im doing...its just that instead of using straight blue as highlight mix, im using blue-green. Because Green is in the base mix, to begin to add only blue will create a bit of a strange contrast i think.

It might just be the light in the photo, but the skin on the face looks a lot bluer than the arm, particularly in the recesses. It looks good, much more sea ogre than fantasy orc. The blue on the hand is interesting, but I'm having trouble visualising what it would look like anywhere else on the model.

But that's just my five cents.

Got my 2nd prize today !!! :-) thanks Chadlance lol! love the ral partha chest, i'm totally gonna paint that soon!

and I think you're dong a sweet and different job on the Ogre, I love the bluey green tones, when i do my skins all I do is use the base green and add the highlight colour until it's pure for the final highlight and somehow your eye tells you that the skin is the highlight colour, look at my alpha legion I toyed with, just blue-highlighted to green :-)

keep it up bro i wanna see it done!

Thanks guys.
Lenny, that's the basecoats of the face the base coat is a lot bluer than the rest of the skin. Haha
Nerdy: you identified the damn thing. give it some love. i wanted to paint it but i figured thatd be a good special prize for you and yea that'a an approach I've used for a while as well and you've certainly mastered it. In this case I'm putting down a dark mid, over highlighting, then shading the whole bit back down, and repeating that over and over. Until finally I've got the two pretty clear, then I can started going in with edge high lights and edge shade. It's pretty fn time consuming:/ I'm gonna keep at it though, push through see what's what.

Also the blue hand, was more to see what exactly that would like like. It's hard to visualize because there's really no where else for it to go...the lip? I dunno...it's easy to change...

Not where I should be

Well I would take it up the underside of the arm, look at your own arm, tanned on top, fleshy underside. same on throat. Sorry started something here.

And Nerdy is perfectly right, his Alpha's are a perfect example of blue green.

Thats a nifty idea cam, had it been in the works from the get go i could see it being implemented to great effect! But, alas, No I'm not going to do that. It would require me to start over essentially, and put a completely different palette to use. Ive a clear vision of what i want to paint, and It's pretty much already done that way. The shaded parts of the under arm are drk blue and brown. Most importantly, to change the color of the bottom half of the arm would not show up that way because it is in shadow so it wouldn't be a true blue, it'd be the darkened version of that color. (Which it currently is)
Even though I may disagree with you, which I do with love, I do always appreciate the feedback and suggestions because I can always put them to use on future models!

Thanks guys

Wow, I turn my head for a little while and things get really amazing! What a great job on the Sharks, and I love love love the chipping tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing that, I was looking at the weathering on those marines and thinking to myself, "Did he paint that damage on??"

Looking forward to how the Sea Ogre turns out.

Hey stephen! Thank alot man, glad you liked the tutorial. No jokes, it was a total pain in the ass to make haha, so, glad its helpful !! Glad you like the sharks btw!

So i was able to get more work done on this ogre fellow. Thanks to some insightful critique on cmon, i redid the top half of the arm this time pulling the shades up to its midtone. IE, the crevices on the upper side of the arm are quite a bit lighter than previously, thus making a less jarring transition from light to shadow. Im really pleased how thats turning out. Still havent completed the hands. Also, i began work on the face. Ive got quite a bit more to do on it, im aware of the blue bleeding into the lip on his right side of the face and thats a correction ill get to. Besides, im not settled on the blue goatee, but im not sure what other color id want to paint it. I think though itll be much more effective once the rest of the skin is finished. So far its based in a shadow tone. Open to suggestions on that...
The metal on his chest has now begun as well and basically its a bunch of washes with varying opacities of turqouise, brown and orange over different basecoats of metals.v Also the shadows are kept very strong on the underside of the belly plate. I washed the bottom half significantly more with black washes and also in strategic crevices on the upper half. Ill probably do the verdigris wash on the mace head as well, but havent gotten around to doing that yet. Anywho, curious to what you guys think? Here's what i have now.

whatcha ya'll think?

Well! Today...the wind knocked my ogre off the table and he broke into its original four pieces + 1. The mace broke right off from the hand. yay, So i glued it back on and have to fix the edge around it. Good thing i didnt paint the wrappings more thana base coat on the mace Enough bad news.I made more progress on this model. Ive yet to continue the inside forearm and fingers so thats not finished. Did begin to add more metal works. I need to go to GW for a super edge highlight metal before i can continue. The lightest i have at the moment is runefang steel. So at least those colors and textures have been blocked in. By the way, what looks like chaos is essentially unpainted parts on his chest. All will be made clear and the dirty armors will be framed with more sharp and vibrant areas! Now more interestingly, I had been stirring in my head how to do an abalone / motherof pearl like effect on this model and, well, i went with it and i think it works pretty darn well. I first painted the handle of the gun like this. Its good for the first attempt, but i then went ahead and did the horns this way because it was so much fun to paint it! It came out, better than expected i think. Im a bit annoyed with finecast, theres always a hidden little wierd piece of something that you miss when doing your model clean up! Especially with a guy this big theres lots of nooks and crannies ready to be ruined by a finecast mold. Anyways...
Ill show the pics and then give a brief explanation below for any interested.

heres the pics

yes thats a k on the gun:/

up close

So. basically, its a base coat of administratum grey and runefang steel. 50/50. then i start putting dabs of really watered down pink, then turqouise. then i highlight then with marble like trails aof the more opaque color. Then i glaze that base coat plus alot of white and tons ofd water so ital most just metalic flakes. Then i highlight some chips with white There it be...abalone. Any thoughts?
