I said it earlier, but the backstory is that Reaper used profits from their first KS to buy a plastic injection machine. Some backers then complained why Reaper wasn't then manufacturing all its Bones miniatures in the USA, and have been saying this for years. Reaper replied that, with only one machine, they couldn't do this in a reasonable amount of time (something like over five years with one machine). What Reaper has been doing is making bases with their in-house machine, for at least several months already.

Plastic bases are no different than plastic miniatures. They require metal molds, and these molds cost money. Some of the bases *are* new, and the new molds must be paid for. Reaper knows they can run a KS, so, if it's a better option than the traditional retailer-distributor model made in the 1940's, then, sure, why not. AFAIK, They've finished up fulfilling the CAV KS, and are waiting on China for the plastic Bones miniatures. So they have a "hole" in their schedule.

Given Dakka's international audience, I don't like the jingoism, either. It's not until you look at the video do you realize they're doing a parody of the inside joke about their plastic injection machine. They do realize that bases are boring, so are also running a contest of silly things you can do with bases:

Spoiler:

Here's what Reaper (and many other manufacturers) think of the traditional retailer-distributor model, btw.

I would like to see reaper jump on the alternative WW2 timeline bandwagon, they could make some nice alternative miniatures. Every now and then i buy some reaper stuff but mostly the SF ones.

Ah, so they have been cranking out product that nobody asked for with the production they have and now have a gap before they receive the stuff that they promised from an overseas source. And they see Kickstarter as a way to move the stock. Gotcha. From a consumer perspective, still seems like a very questionable offering.

I am familiar with the video from 2012. Manufacturers generally prefer to sell direct to retailers as you capture more profits. Distributors in the hobby industry grew because there were so many small players and they provided a central hub for retailers. Additionally, they made products from the few big companies accessible for retailers who didn't want to carry huge stocks that direct contracts required. Internet access had made communication between retailers (and customers) and manufacturers much easier.

The problem with some of these projects is it goes straight to consumer and cut out both the distributor *and the retailer*. Reaper acknowledged this and seems to have tried to address it.

Wait, what??? What's your source for this?

The Reaper forums have 17 pages discussing this KS, and the KS has raised 13K. Sounds like there's demand for these bases.

Reaper posts a top ten of their web store sales, and, iirc, one of the square bases was a top seller a few months ago.

Found an album of their base molds on Reaper's FB page, from September 2014. 111 Likes.: https://www.facebook.com/ReaperMini/photos/?tab=album&album_id=10152697200028057

Yeah... my reaction to his post was pretty much

It is obvious that Reaper is making stuff that nobody wants, that is why their Kickstarters are doing so poorly.... (If by 'poorly' you mean 'amazingly well' and by 'nobody' you mean 'tens of thousands of people'....)

This is not an exciting Kickstarte - and they know that it is not an exciting Kickstarter - but it is something that folks on the Reaper forums have been asking for. And something that even came up in the comments section of the Bones II Kickstarter.

I would like to see some nice, simple, large rectangular bases - not beveled, so that they can be used on either side, depending on your needs.

There may be other companies that make such bases, but - so what? If I have a chance to get them in a Kickstarter then I will - ordering them six months ahead would only be a problem if I did not expect to have a use for them in six months time.

I can use then now - but I will also be able to use them then. My need for unit bases will not miraculously disappear - I will simply be using them for different figures than the ones that I am painting now.

But, hey, if folks want to complain....

They say they used that machine to make bases, but you just know it was really used for the injection modding equivalent of photocopying your butt. Why else the delay in manufacturing?

The size of that machine, and the scale of it's production, are underwhelming, to say the least. It's no wonder that the bulk of production is required to occur over seas.

Thanks, but... this can't be used for plastic. The moulds shown are only usable in a proper injection casting machine:

fwiw, Here's a pic of their plastic injection machine, Thomas.

I think Reaper said their Chinese manufacturer had 15 of these or something?? They also mentioned there's some training needed to run 'em.

Reapercon is coming up October 20, so if you happen to be out Texas way...

There will be exclusive minis of course.

These 5 models will also be available for purchase on this website during ReaperCon - October 20-23rd, but only for a limited time!

And double plus exclusive VIP minis

I really like the four faction minis. Probably not enough to ever buy and paint, but I do like them in an abstract, good will sort of way.

When I lived in Houston, I made the trip to Mecca/Reaper Studios (North of Dallas) once to play in a HackMaster tournament. The good folks at Reaper gave us a tour, let us watch them pour and spink a few pewter molds, and buy all the things!

Nice people, cool stuff.
