So... how's everyone doing?

My enthusiasm for painting is kind of flagging a bit as I've found it very easy to find other things to do besides paint. I'm looking for a mental diversion here until I can get myself cranked up about hitting the painting desk again. Anything interesting going on in anyone's hobby life?

OH-I Wanna get out of here

Went to drop off the last bits of the Warlord to Ramos last weekend (well, almost last bits). Played some Zombicide black plague with him and his brother. It makes some nice improvements on the original. Finished up modeling the Salamanders to send to our favorite Hondaboy. Going to assemble some other junk for him next.

I'm in the same boat, Gits, I made the mistake of getting hyped for my Age of Sigmar project long before the minis were due to arrive/I could buy some more, so short of tinkering with some fluff for that I've not been getting much done in the past week or so. I have a Tactical Squad sitting on my desk yelling 'paint us, paint us', but they suffer from... well, being a Tactical Squad, and thus really, really repetitive!

Good luck getting your motivation back, what's up next when you do get around to painting?

Me too.. I haven't painted since before Adepticon. Trying to ge through the portal comp, but am struggling with my design. Too much in the spring to do list inside and outside. Fighting practice starts up so I need to get my gear in shape.

Maybe I need to get a game in.

For me? Well, on the side I'll continue to work on some of the Hordes figs because Thing 1.0 has been brow-beating me about it non-stop. "You need a bigger army." "You need a bigger army." My next project... sitting on my desk actually... is a shiny new box filled with Bloodthirster goodness to be painted up for the next step of the campaign (and to join my Halloween army). I'm trying to decide if I just want to build the generic one (that would come in with a summoning spell) or if I want to try and figure out how to switch out the arms so I could field more than one version of it.

I'm also putting together a care package for Hondaboy including my reaver... but I'm waiting on one last model to come in to my FLGS before I can send everything off.

The youngest has been making me play a lot of MTG lately... which rots my brain. But I'd feel like a bad father if I said... "no son, I don't want to play with you"... and frankly... I DO want to play with him. So that's that.

Thank you guys... I found a little bit of inspiration last night.

Working on this one-off Hordes figure that I really like the sculpt of. Thought it would be a good chance to work on my human skin technique (which is crap). Still very WIP but I am pretty happy with how the skin is coming up. I'm using very basic techniques on the rest of the model in order to contrast stylistically with the skin & make it stand out a bit more.

Got together a Bloodthirster recently, and lets just say... It doesn't like being magnetized. I magnetized the 2 handed Axe for storage, but getting the other configurations on seem nigh on impossible. I am happy with the sculpt, even if the armour plates seem in strange places.

She looks fine to me Gitz, skin tones look good. Perhaps you can add her in as a chaos sorceress to your army.

Recent Faq...Q: If you play Daemons and you successfully summon a Bloodthirster using the Daemonology psychic powers, what profile will the Bloodthirster have: the one in Codex: Chaos Daemons, or one of the ones in Codex: Khorne Daemonkin?
A:You can choose to use any of the army list entries from Codex: Chaos Daemons, Codex: Khorne Daemonkin or War Zone Fenris: Curse of the Wulfen – but not Skarbrand!

Though, that FAQ is only a draft... so I'm not sure I would count it as gospel yet.

Looking good there. Do we vote or does Gits choose? Cos I wouldn't be able to pick a favourite

@WD: That's up for debate. I was originally planning on having a small group do the judging... but am toying with the idea of a popular vote for the "best mini" category. The "best interpretation of theme" I will pick myself (and will gladly take all the abuse I'll get as a result).

@Cam: Beautifully done. The greens, the work on the faces, the free-hand decorations... all wonderfully done. I have a couple of questions for you though.
1. Why is the on Mantis Warrior lying down on his belly? He doesn't appear to be injured.
2. Where is the left arm of the silver marine? I can't make out from any of the photos what position it's in.

That terminator is just the nuts man... love him!

Here's the finished Shepherd for Hordes...

Hey gits, I got bit my the mantis fever but I started my painting without technically enrolling. I don't feel comfortable entering anyways after so many guys have put in such hard work with beautiful results. Is there a secondary portion I could enter, that isn't part of the main prizes/judging? And seeing as I've Practically finished the mini I don't really don't have an expectation, I just wanted to try my own hand at a mantis warriors theme. Great entries so far, cams is just brilliantly nuts. Anywho, the hordes mini is looking great. Don't be so hard on yourself, those skin tones look fab. Nice and even painting. Great job Cheers Gits!

The hordes mini looks great gits. Very penetrating stare; I've never been able paint Iris's - I don't know how you manage it! The base nicely balanced the colours in the mini too!

Have to say the minis in the painting challenge are looking really good to! Go dakkanaughts!

She looks great Git's, fleshtone is fantastic, even if it was not obvious, the skin says we are looking at a lady, great stuff, that purple is brilliant too. Great mini, glad you are putting these guys up.

Thanks guys. They never look as good blown up on dakka as I think they should given where I left off with them. The skin highlighting still looks blocky to me in spite of my best efforts to do gradual blends... but it was a good exercise none-the-less.

I use a clay shaping tool (i.e. GS tool) to do the eyes. It's a round, soft rubber (or perhaps Teflon) point. I gently dip it in a little black paint and then just touch it to the eye... leaves a nice, fairly distinct and uniform dot which works pretty well. The size of the dot depends on how hard I press the tool into the eye socket.

Been a shift in my painting schedule. Going to finish up my 30k EC Dorito dreadnought for our club's first 30k night in a couple of weeks. Keep an eye on my EC thread for progress.

Considering you weren't painting anything when the comp started, an exception seems reasonable (up to Gits, obviously). It doesn't really fit with the theme though, beyond being a mantis warrior.

Yeah, i probably should read the specifics of the comp before posting i was under the impression anything to do with mantis warriors was acecptable. However, again, i dont want any exceptions made for me, and it would be unfair to jump in to the main comp at this point in time. Im just interested in participating from a community standpoint

Not where I should be

Shut up and adapt your entry to fit the theme, it is a stunning piece and no one here is going to argue it should not be in the comp. Besides if it falls short on theme at least it gives people like myself a fighting chance against your stunning painting.

As to adaptation, you will best get started on a second model to show how age and experience is better than your beautiful shiny clean marine teenager...
