Have you ever read any China Mieville? Your writing reminds me of him sometimes. He has a book about mouldywarps called Railsea (as I mentioned in email, although it's not a great book) and he also has a similar weird Britishness to his sci-fi in his Bas-Lag books.

@ Monkey aye true enough

@Bruticus i will have take a look at china Melville's work i think it might be up my street .. cheers mate.

@ Pdh

@ earthbeard .. Thanks yeah fantasy RPG was the look i was after. glad that comes through.

,Aye up folks

I made a sci fi Antarctica inspired 3by3 gameboard recently for a game of inq28

I took plenty of snaps whilst making it , and when i have time i will upload the wips.. might come in handy if anyone else is making ice / snow effect stuff.

Spoiler:
quote from Opus Maius " I learned a few new tricks in the process , casting with clear resin and I used an airbrush for the first time. following the age old salt weathering and hairspray techniques for the buildings and pipes .

the rock molds are from woodland scenics and the snow effect was created by mixing pva glue with woodland scenics snow effect - woodland scenics realistic water with the snow effect - and woodland scenics water effects with the snow effect. in different places .

this was over a base coat of liquid nails , extruded polystyrene and expanded polystyrene spray .

that was washed with turquoise ink

the ice affect is poured clear resin over painted liquid nails.

the houses/hab units are half drainpipes with added detail from the gw manufactorum kit . and a few toy bits from gi goe i think .

the stairs are from the GW Dave Andrews trench kit

the whole thing is based on 3mm mdf , which in hindsight was too thin i think. ;-)"

It genuinely looks cold and chilly rather than just painted white. Their looks to be icicles and frost about really impressive.

Man you are just amazing! As a resident of Canada now I can promise you that the snow effects are incredibly realistic, I live overlookinjg a lake that does just what the one you modeled does!

Very impressive anyway, where do you store all these masterpieces though?

Hey folks thanks for the positives , glad you like I made a few learning mistakes in the process that might be avoided for others doing similar stuff .. the snow yellowed in parts , especially over the painted liquid nails.. it may just need more layers of snow waiting until after each layer has dried to apply the new , or it might just be the fact i painted the liquid nails white with a cheap matte emulsion .. not sure .. the snow over the resin didn't yellow at all so maybe its not the snow effect.

Anyhow I took some wips whilst working .. and I thought I would put em up here for posterity.

you might notice , that the board went few quite a few drastic changes in its process including removing all of the early snow effect from the hab units, which was a bit of a hassle actually , but it did giove me the confidence to try out more snow techniques, including clear caulk , which works really well as ice .. but stinks to high heaven.. really not an option for a board this size . even though its really cheap ..

I put up most of my ice inspiration in my gimme bar on Opus maius for those whom it might be useful to.

@ Llamahead thanks man , the icicles all disappeared really which is a shame the caulk made great icicles as did plastic cut from the blister packs

@ lone dirty dog

@ cormadepanda I thought he was just having a seizure of some sort

@ ghosty qoute" Now I know I'm not the only one who was thinking 'the Thing' " Guilty as charged yep the thing and its not so bad prequal , as well as the the games and dead space 3 .. amongst other things

@ madmartykmf thanks Mike , I dont think I have ever received an A + on anything .. hope your well mate

@ Commander Cain Hey CC your too kind , qoute " I live overlooking a lake that does just what the one you modelled does!"

really that's great to know , i was a bit in the dark with the ice lake , I originally wanted a stormy ice sea with ice bergs , like in this killzone map
Spoiler:

but this seemed easier to stow and transport ..and i would have had to raise the whole board to give the sea some depth , not really an option for a board you have to transport on a train and taxi.

storage is still a huge issue , no shed as yet.

It's really just excellent, highlight of my day was having a game on this board. I like that you have put some WIP images up because they way it just appeared out of no-where was quite alarming.

Maybe you could add some sort of cross braces to the bottom of the board to reinforce it a bit.

Oh and for your next project I propose a gateway board that connects this arctic research lab to the Ygg somehow, some sort of warp rupture board pieces with snow blowing in through a rip in space and time. Or maybe a wardrobe on the Ygg that if you walk through it you end up here.

Hey folks, the Narrative of Inquisitor Vendrake was continued on Saturday during a second round of INQ28

as usual I find blogger easier to use for mass linear photo editing so more stuff regarding this at http://opusmaius.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/requiem-act.html

was another great day for 40k narrative hobbying with quite a few folks from around the globe sending minis to molotov http://inq28.blogspot.co.uk/ to participate.
although I took the opportunity to chill out and take photos more than anything else.

How does your narrative hobbying work exactly? Is it a game of Inquisimunda with some artistic flair explaining what happened? Or more of a storyline prewritten and using the figures as a sort of graphic novel? There are a few guys here that are starting up a Necro/Inquisimunda game and/or campaign, and I've been super inspired by your work on both characters and terrain . Any tips would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Aye up folks , its been a while .. I think the gully sucker sucked away all my free time

@ CC love the snow effect in that game.. cheers buddy

@Bruticus heya Matey , good idea about strengthening the board , if i get it back i might just do that .. then again i do bore most easily of projects that are completed. an interconnecting ygg board would be great , but my next project is already planned .. Cryptic besides a 40k wardrobe is much easier haha.

@ Rawson , hey Rawsone sorry for the late reply mate .. my gaming circle principally has two directions .. inq28 gaming in the past has been at warhammer world , organised by , commissar Molotov , and Gmed by folks who know what they are doing in inquisitor .. I tried to learn the rules but i just dont seem to have the patience for it This means that inq28 gaming is literally just inquisitor just scaled down. its a quite complicated game that benefits a gm who sets the narrative for the two players .. more on that at the conclave and ammobunker or on Mols blog Inq28. I have been lucky in that i have been able to turn up and play , whilst other folk have done the complicated rules bits the inquisitro rule book is on the the gw website as a pdf i think.

the other string to my gaming bow is on the yyg campaign that is gmed by PDH and Fulgrim of the tears of Isstvaan .. although rise of the magi seems to know what he is doing in any given situation as well the rules for this are a bit more relaxed than inquisitor , and often our gaming sessions get made up on the fly , but the backbone of it is the necromunda community edition rules .. which PDH knows off by heart ... thankfully ..

the link between both systems is narrative as you point out .. and by that i mean .. the story , setting etc.. motives for gaming .. ganging..are equally important as the rules systems,, and for that matter the terrain and the models themselves .. its never just about winning for me its about experiences really.

its probably important to note that we often game at warhammer world , as its communal to most folks, it takes time and effort and money to get there normally for most folks, so the investment in our models or terrain is important , and I guess because we have often blogged the games it helps that the models or scenery are photogenic

i am sure other folks I game with have their own reasons .. but we all share a passion to ..illuminate the nether regions of 40k ..

that been said I like a solid strategy game as much as the next.. and i have an anchoring to play battle fleet gothic something rotten. although i still tempted to recreate space crusade / advanced space crusade with modern minis

hope that helps mate.

speaking of narrative gaming ... I am currently making a gang for a game of Confrontation -- (not rackhams ) the proto necromunda game .. I have been through the mill deciding what gang to use .. i started off with mutants then , ash waste nomads .. now i think i am settled on Techs ..

I have to say .. Confrontation is and has always been , my favourite aspect of 40k .. so to finally get to game with other folks who share this passion-- after 20 odd years is just incredible .. i have bot blogged on opus for a while and its currently dormant , but i will endeavour to reopen it to blog this upcoming event.

i thought i would share a few pics i took earlier .. the models are now cleaned and prepared and are awaiting paint .

Aye up folks .. I manged to finish the paintwork on the Palatine Mechanicus TEK gang. not so happy with the good luck caryatid though .. I painted swirls tattoos all over him but it looked a bit much so i repainted him and its gone a bit meh never mind , happy enough with the ganger's though .. and I am especially proud of the bases where i tried to combine the Gothic elements of Necromunda with the industrial sci fi elemants of confrontation this painting lark is becoming fun

@Moltar cheers mate , and right back at you as well

@Weets hey weety , your too kind as for confrontation yeah bring it back .. well maybe not.. just do another skirmish game for adults set in 40k with its own custom plastics range of minis and industrial Gothic scenery and i would be more than happy

we will no doubt end up using necro rules tbh as there will be a fair few of us ..

@ PDH not long now ... yeah sorry about the nomads .. i just didn't think i would have the time to start green greenstuffing tbh .. i will get back to them in due course no doubt.

@Ruglud ooh what minis do you have ? i have been putting together a file on all the minis that were made released and unreleased for it .. some great brats never saw the light of day according to stuff of legends ..

@ Chelnov .. hey bud.. No terarrain this time im afraid .. we game on saturday so not enough time unfortunately.. although we have some cool tables prebooked so , that shouldn't be a problem .. i wouldn't mind making a dio base for them tbh , but i have plans afoot for more scenery so I doubt that will happen any time soon if at all.

The snow table is just …well …err …… you know …….BLODDY AMAZING !!!!!

So many techniques and effects achieved, you really should do a break down of each effect and the technique used to achieve it with a resource index, I know I ask a lot

Love the new gang look, really quite ingenious to use that combination gives them a more stream line figure.

Really is reminiscence of the art work, I think you have a tough time ahead though of matching the art style when it comes to the paint work.

You always amaze me with each update and your terrain is some of the best I have seen, it is always a pleasure to see
