Gave the blue all a wash of nulin oil before continuing with the rest and now just need to add the tufts and decals to complete the squad.

Hey, don't say anything to anyone but I'm actually a big fan of the Ultramarines scheme! I know it's not cool to be a fanboy but they just do it well! and yours are doing it very well, I hate painting blues, it's one colour I really struggle with but yours look great :-)

I feel the same, I really like the blue they had at around the start of 5th with that nice touch of gold to accent it. The old scheme has its points, but I feel like it was too bright and cartoon looking, made details sort of seem bland. Though I actually hate painting red cause I can never get it to be just the way I want it, then every time I look at something I've painted blue I just think it looks a lot better than whatever else I've painted.

Anyway for a slight update I just started painting a captain Titus I made, though I intend to run double jump librarian and calgar most of the time instead. And as for the ring on the last page it went fine and I'm now engaged.

Nice Ultras. I’m a fan of darker/richer tones on the blues myself.

And grats on the engagement.

Very nice blues. I agree it looks better after the last wash, separates it more from the candy look a lot of people have a lot better.

Especially like the Corvus sergeant-- it makes sense that the veteran sergeant would be wearing the older, more venerated armor!

I need to get a full corvis squad or something, it and the mk6 are the best looking ones in my opinion. Least some mk6 helmets for the librarians.

Anyway here's Titus so far, I'm not sure of the face but I realised I just had some dwarf flesh from 2009 when it came to painting skin and surprisingly it wasn't dried out, so just went with it, white and some fleshwash.

Calgar also finally arrived today and went instantly into a container of pineoclean for later, so yay Titus is almost already replaced in a way. Still he'll have his use and it seems whenever I make armies now I end up with a bunch of redundant HQs sitting around by the end of it.

Yeah, gotta love the beaky helmets. I have a few in my Dark Angels army and I have to say, they do look really intimidating!

Face looks fine, and he looks good overall.

I love that that the new tac box has all the parts you need to put together a full suit of Mk. VI armor. I had to use them to add some new hardware to my old RTB01 squads. When putting together a squad, any beakie helms go to the coolest guys.

There is no such thing as “redundant” of “too many” SM HQs. Just tactical flexibility at the list building stage. I’m up to 5 captains painted (not including Calgar) and am working on bike HQs to fill out the PA/TDA/JP/Bike matrix. The HQ picks are the most fun to paint, would you deny yourself that?

I mean with the Eldar I used at most 2 spiritseers, but had a bonesinger, several farseers, bike farseer, spiritseers, autach ready to go. I usually get distracted by it rather than making the core of the army first.

Really like it! You did a great job capturing Titus' facial features, it's really amazing how good you are at detail like that

I have a hard time painting faces, I prefer to stick to helmeted models heh.

Great work bud, looking excellent.

Got to add, love the basing, we all get carried away with it now, but yours are a nice balance of detailed enough to be interesting, but do not distract away from the model at all. Another lesson learned for me.

Nice work on Titus' face. And the model as a whole actually, but the face is particularly good.

Ended up finishing Calgar pretty quickly.

Seeing that face zoomed in in the pictures while cropping them and such, his expression reminded me of this instantly.

I actually like the look of helmets a lot more, like it makes a lot more sense for them to have them on instead which is why I'm making sure to follow the scheming right for the helmet markings.

Thanks, they're just the urban rubble bases from thirdeyenuke so don't need to do anything really but the tufts to liven it up a bit.

We did have the period where she tried to get me out of it because it reminded her of an ex, but I pointed out I didn't play space marines and made a huge pink Eldar army. Then started space marines anyway, she doesn't care now; guess just needed to see I wouldn't be stupid and waste too much money on it which was the main concern with the ex.

Somewhere on Terra

Xiphon - really!?
200 pts for 2 HP seems a bit of a stretch.
Plus the model is like £80 (quite reasonable for FW but still expensive)
Two stormtalons would be far better

I'm open to both really, I just like the model and the weapons more. The talons would likely be more efficient being able to take two targets at once, plus the strafing run. Plus I guess it appeals as it's basically the imperium's equivalent to the crimson hunter.

How would you suggest running the stormtalon?

To be fair to the Xiphon fighter, you can sorta sit back and spam missiles and las cannon shots from range.

The Xiphon is much better looking then the talon, and I think the comparison to the CH is apt. It’s a glass-hammer supremacy fighter. Although without something like hover of vector dancer, I think it’s going to have problems lining up shots/keeping on the table.

I love my stormtalon. He’s a scrappy little bird. I think the skyhammers offer the best bang/buck, but frankly anything other then the HBs is not a bad call.

From a play POV, I think the Xiphon looks very expensive and fragile for what it does. Although that’s all theoretical, as I’ve not seen one in play. The talon might not be able to erase other flyers from the sky like the Xiphon, but it costs half as much and is much more flexible.

From a modeling POV, there isn’t much comparison. While the talon has grown on me (It helps to think of it as a helicopter gunship, rather then a flyer) the Xiphon is a much better looking piece of kit, that actually looks like it belong in the sky.

This was sort of the plan since I want to bring a few thunderfires along I figured the infantry would be handled and the talon seemed to be for a mix of both vehicle hunting and infantry, while the xiphon was just straight up zoom in and shoot at vehicles.

Speaking of which, got a tfc today and built it... I still want two more in the list and the thing was a nightmare to go with so the rapiers are looking like a much better option for the rest.

Yeah the model looks great from some angles then complete trash from others.
Seems moving the weapons can fix that, but then comes into fun with how it can sort of play with the rules I think. I guess with lascannons and being to hover I can sort of get what I was looking at the xiphon for, but obviously cheaper and I guess a wooden mallet instead of a sledgehammer would be a good comparison.

It was somewhat a nightmare to get together, but I managed to finish the Thunderfire and find one of the bases I have that it can sit on nicely.

I'm unsure of if I should have glued the techmarine's pack on just yet but shouldn't be too bad. The benefit is at least with a resin one I won't have to worry about it just falling apart all the time like my metal one did. Really after the time's it's fallen apart and such I just have the body, probably use it to make the gunners look different for any more cannons at least.

I also mixed and matched a bunch of bits to make two jump Librarians.

Might be hard to see, but I tracked down some purifier torsos and used their backs with the old assault marine fronts to give them psychic hoods. At first I actually had these on 40mm bases and with helmets, however it didn't look right. Unlike Titus who works with his 40mm base these two looked small and out of place and I figured already having all the infantry on at least 32mm means I probably shouldn't push my luck with that extra 8mm on their powers on top of that.

I have...less then fond memories about putting together my finecast TFC. I’d like to own another one, but not in anything but plastic.

I did the same trick for getting librarians. One box of GKs will add a lot of fun bits to your collection, including enough psychic hoods to make more librarians then you’d ever be able to field. Like those two guys, looking sharp!

Seems the TFC will actually be quick to paint.
Though I'm going to probably be working on this red for a while to get it the way I want it. Thought I had a good balance on it yesterday, but it's turned out a lot darker today. Mostly playing with black, vmc red and vmc vermillion. The red is sort of like red gore while the vermillion is brighter like blood red, however it dries a lot darker; something I actually want when playing with layers. I want to have my reds come out darker so I can just use other paints to get that more vibrant look for the highlights.

This.

The gold caught my attention - on both the aquilla and shells. Not sure if it's a bad thing, but it takes attention away from a beautifully painted model.
