Bases look spot on. Always had a soft spot for the cult, so tempted. These old models still fit perfectly.

Nice work on the bases, the city/slum theme will work really well for GSC.

Thanks guys, the feedback is always appreciated.

Tried a different technique for the Sentinel bases. Used alluminum foil to get an impression off of some techy looking bits that were laying around, then filled those impressions with hot glue. Waited for it to harden then hot glued it to the base. After that, all it took was a sharp pair of scissors to trim it to the proper shape.

Cool idea on the bases.

Experimented with the foil top off a snack sized can of Pringles Chips and it worked better, with the thicker aluminum foil lid. Next grocery run will include a roll of the heaviest aluminum foil to be found.

I've looked forward to seeing how they will look with some paint, but It's been too cold an rainy to base coat, with black matte spray paint. Hopefully it's something that can be accomplished tomorrow.

Have some progress pictures to upload as well.

Tech detail panel, in foil.
Statue Face, in foil.

Any ideas that would be a good application of this technique ?

what do you mean by that?

Do you have any ideas for gaming related models, terrain, or bits that could be useful, and created with the foil mold and glue technique ?

Off of the top of my head, I'm thinking doors and windows, that could duplicated and then glued onto buildings.

ahh.... now i got you....

yes....doors and windows is a very good idea....

since you have a relatively flexible substance here... what about making treads? for tanks?....a long and rather thin band of treads then made to a kind of bracelet?...could be you´re bound for a revolution...

Tank treads would be a great application. I'll keep that in mind when I need some on my next Ork creation.

Spoiler:

I backed the Trash Bash Bits Kickstarter and was thinking of experimenting with them.

I am worried that the borders will be a little too deep. This technique seems to work well with shallow detail.

Tank treads just made me think of a column of vertically stacked skulls.

skulls sounds at first quite the challenge...

as for the too deep borders...hmm...heat perhaps to make the materials more "willing"?

also...what about strips/boards of rivets?...that should be a nice addition to almost everything...terrain vehicles etc...

oh...and what about wings?

The detail is only one side, so I wouldn't use the method for wings, but strips of rivets is another excellent suggestion.

The mold material is aluminum foil, so there isn't really any give. If you don't allow enough slack, it tears. If you allow too much slack you end up with additional material bunched up.

Admittedly, aluminum foil is very thin, and you can press it nearly flat if you don't over do it.

Silicon molds would reproduce pretty much anything better than aluminum foil, but require more time and resources. The Foil method is great for small, mostly flat things, that you would likely only need one or two of.

well...what if you go from alu to copper foil? i think it is a bit stronger...just a thought...

Didn't even realize that it was a thing.

A quick search of Amazon revealed Aluminum and Copper foil in an assortment and sizes and thicknesses.

Alluminum 25ft x 12" 36 gauge $20

Copper 5ft x 12" 36 gauge $30

I'm not sure how thick 36 gauge is, but one reviewer described it as thinner than a credit card, and more like 2-3 business cards stuck together.

Converted death chickens look great! those Mega nobz must have had the most, and biggest teef collections!

The doors are great! I could see some for buildings, some for ship hallways, especially that iris door.

Yeah, most of those nobz are Warboss sized. A slight disadvantage mechanically for the sake of looking cool.

When I posted those Chicken Walkers over on Facebook , some people were upset I desecrated hard to find OOP Star Ship Troopers models to make them. It made that conversion work completely worth it It's not like I was going to use them for Star Ship Troopers, with it being our of production and hard to get models for.

Did back both of the Trash Bash Bits Kickstarters, still waiting on the models from the second one. Been procrastinating making a proper silicone mold for them to make enough to suit my modeling needs. Trying to focus on models and not get caught up constantly turning out new terrain.

But terrain!

People can get butthurt about it if they want, but they were your chicken walker things and your results are ace.

Definitely keep us posted on the hotglue/foil thing. I'd like to do some super simple casting but silicon molds put me off.

Not where I should be

Cheap easy alternatives to silicone are available. Your foil technique is very interesting, and will be borrowing it. One or too things I can think of you trying out would be individual panels for ork use. See if you can get a bit of checker plate and cut it into miscellaneous shapes and add a rivet or too, then cast, so you have various panels to stick to a basic design or kit. You could also do brickwork, rock walls and just odd face stones for sticking to foam core to make it a bit more interesting adding texture. Thin stone sections would definitely be an idea. Control panels would be another idea. If you have a friend in catering ask if they can get you some industrial grade foil from the kitchens, that is usually thicker stuff, but would also suggest doubling your layers of foil.

To be honest though, I have found good results casting with Plasticine for if you just need a few of something, and £20 will buy you a lot of Blue Stuff, that stuff that you "melt" in hot water, way more useful than silicone to us and you can reuse it over and over. I have no issues with silicone myself though, got a batch at present sets up in 4 hours, very good tear resistance, no problems to work with. Spent £30 on a pot of stuff you melt in the microwave, it is great, except the heat can be an issue.

Lastly, how are you applying your hot glue, out the gun? Try melting it in a pan, don't go too far, and use an dedicated pan, but this gives you a pouring consistency much better for getting into the details. Have seen videos of people making moulds like this.

After all that, love your results so far, great work, and as always inspirational.

Foil Factory Progress

Made a cult symbol out of cardboard and then embossed it onto the banner.

The first two Genestealer Cult Icons I made were a bit too large

Made another pamel, but this time around I spent extra time to get all the detail I could.

Having built Metamorphs, I had some lovely Acolyte Demo Charge arms going unused

Oh, and here are some of the Metamorphs.

Only one set of whip and claw arms included in the box, so I had to improvise to get a squad of 5 of them.

I'm a bit baffled by the foil stuff and I don't really understand what's going on...but the banner you made looks great!

Thanks EDC !!

The foil thing is basically embossing taken to the next level. You get some alluminum foil, sturdier is better, form it around something you want to duplicate, peel it off, and then fill the inside with glue , to allow it to keep it's form.

Yeah, not like SST is that played much that I have seen.

Ah, paperclips reshaped can be made into anything!

I see you smoothed the foil to make the face molds, inventive!

I've just been experimenting with whatever foil that was on hand. Next trip to the grocery store I intend to pick up "heavy duty" cooking foil.

To answer your question Vik, the foil from yogurt and tomato crème tubes should work as well.

Shas, paperclips just seem to be the right diameter for many miniatures scaled projects. Not to thick, but sturdy enough to hold their form.
