Except that a lot of the tropical birds of that colour have much more pronounced curves to the top of their beaks.

The shape of those beaks makes me think of corvids - Rooks, Crows, Ravens. All of which are black birds with taht sort of short, straight pointed beaks good for pecking holes in, and then tearing chunks off of, flesh.

That depends on the size, of course, but even small ones could be young corvids. But at least the smaller ones could be tits or something.

So sorry I care for accuracy in models. Good luck with buying a Patlabor model and using it as a Tau Titan!

Actually Conrad, I'd noticed it too. I think corbids would be more appropriate for grim dark basing. But to each his own, people can paint them as they will.

They might not be perfect for Grimdark purposes, but (and I know we all sometimes forget this) there are other models and games out there for which these might be more suitable basing or terrain decorations.

If you want to be super-accurate on bird types then paint them up as corvids or blackbirds, doves thrushes etc. No one's saying you have to make them as brightly coloured as Kromlech have.

It was probably just a bit more fun to paint them that way and it helps to show off details/make the product more eye-catching than perhaps a more drab/realistic paint job would.

No.

I don't play fantasy games.

I'm not in to WHFB, although I used to play DnD a fair bit, I was always more of a Paranoia fan. I am a Science Fiction appreciator, hence I was always drawn more to WH40K than WHFB or WHRP.

I am into this sort of stuff for the models, not the games. I am quite happy that other people like these birds. It means that Kromlech will sell enough of them to have made it worth their time, effort, and expense. This means they are more likely to produce more stuff, and there is plenty of theirs that, whether I have already bought it, plan to buy it in the future, or don't plan on buying it at all, I like.

What I don't like is people putting me down for my opinion, just because I have had the nerve to have one and state it. It's not like I was forcing it on anyone, my opinion is only as valid as anyone elses, but it is JUST as valid as anyone elses! (I also think it's unfair to have changed the post I said that to so that it is now a one word post that gives a total disconnect with what I said to it, but that's MY fault for not quoting it when it was in it's original form.)

my apologies Conrad... I changed it because after reading your follow up post I felt that I came across a bit dickish.
I didn't mean to somehow turn you into a bad guy for having an opinion.

I edited my previous post again to lead into yours better.

The new gun is nice, except that front grip may need custom hands to fit it?

Wonderful goblin ammo dealers, although personally I'd have called them heavy artillery crew, as presumably that's what they'll mostly be used for. Not sure whether I like the fins on the sides of the 'shells'(?) as they seem to imply a rocket rather than an artillery shell, but they'd be easily trimmed off for anyone wanting a more traditional artillery shell

You are not far off base. Evolution, although each mutation is blind, means that form follows function. Each different type of beak is due to a different food supply. The beaks on those birds are based on the beaks of birds found on this miserable mudball of a planet at this period in it's timeline, and are based on carrion-eaters. Tropical birds have different shape beaks because they mainly eat nuts, which require a greater force to crack. Birds of prey have to catch their food and have yet another shape to their beaks. The same problem occurs with the 'aliens' that people claim to have really seen. The 'Greys' are a real dichotomy. They have huge heads and massive eyes, but spindly bodies. The head is too large to be supported effectively by anything approaching human physiology. If the eyes are single eyes, like human eyes, then there is not enough room in the head for any significant amount of brain matter, therefore logically, they must be compound eyes such as insects have. The size of them suggests that the Greys are not used to large amounts of light, or that their eyes are not very efficient. The spindly bodies imply a low gravity worlds as their home, but they are short, implying high gravity. If they were from a high gravity world, evolution would favour short. stocky creatures that were not in danger of breaking bones if they tripped. This suggests that actually the 'Greys' are an equivalent to ants, but even then, they lack the body mass for that.

Gravity is the main problem for your 'alien' birds. Too high a gravity and there won't be any birds, they could not get into the air. Between there and Earth type gravity, is a curve of probability which decribes what would be required for flight. Even in our gravity, birds don't generally fly more than they have to as it requires a large reserve of energy. Lower gravity and birds could be much larger, even more so than the flying reptiles of the dinosaur ages.

All I was trying to point out was that it would have been nice to have some different design of beaks in that set so that people could accurately produce whatever type of bird they wanted without having to convert them.

Great looking gun sketch! Clang is right in saying that a special hand/arm may need to be sculpted to hold both handles though.

Loving the birds as well, I'm sure I can think of a way to fit them into a 40k army somehow. Things like that really make a model stand out from the crowd.
