I was going over the stats for the Vegas GT and don't know what the factors are for awarding the sportsman award.  I saw a Necron player with 50 pts.,   4 favorite opponent votes and a couple players choice votes, yet he seemed to have been skunked on the prizes.  The player that did win the sportsman award had 50pts. for sportsmanship also, but only 2 favorite opponent  and no players choice votes.  There seemed to also be some others with perfect sportsman scores, which is phenomenal from what I read here of people being jacked over for these scores in tournaments.
I was just wondering what the criteria are for giving out the sportsman award, how  ties are resolved.

Maybe they can gather who is a genuine good sportsmen from a person who is simply trying to win that award entirely by that comparison you stated. Anyone who gets a perfect for sportsmanship is often likely to be just gritting their teeth and thinking of the prize.

A real sportsmen is an unsung hero.

As for the ties, battle to the death?

I would write to Dave Taylor and ask. There's likely an explanation behind it but I sure don't know what it is.

The Necron player is from my gaming group the Wrecking Crew. When this came up on our boards he said he didn't mind that they had picked someone else. I guess he is an unsung hero(we still sing the praises). He and his teammate for the doubles tournament got the sports award in that event. I guess he's just a fun guy to play.

Is there any call for that crap?

With all the good work Dave Taylor and the crew have done on the GT and on clearly communicating about the problems and what they're doing to fix them, there is just no justification for impugning their integrity.

Write and ask; don't just reflexively slag people.

That's a tad unfair, declaring favoritism , without knowing how the scoring process works.

I went to the wrecking crew website and it looks like the Necron player had a great tournament and a heck of a lot of fun there, with no complaints.

Troll country

I agree with what mauleed said. Often we want to blame the judges by saying they cheated us out of what we feel we deserve but most likely it was probably a few mistakes down the line.

Or it could be neither malice nor incompetence and we simply don't know how they score.

Tim had a great time and thats all that matters although we would have liked for him to have won the award it could be all attributed to a mistake. Give Dave a break its his first major GT,

Um, aren't you limited to winning one prize? didn't the necron player win a prize (well, shared a prize) in the doubles event? Does that have some bearing on why he didn't win this one?

I agree with what mauleed said.
*brain explodes*

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

We had a GT in Brisbane recently. The Judges awarded Sportsmanship awards based on your opponents feedback. This can be both good and bad. If you play an opponent who is Arrogant, rude and a nitpicker for the rules, and you give him a hiding, will YOU get a BAD Sports award? I know from personal experience that you can have a great GT ruined by a Jerk with Attitude. I [play this game for the modelling, mateship and general "fun" that we all know makes for a great game. When we all really get down to it, we are all playing with (Masculine((excluding sisters of battle) little dolls. This Chonga that was on our GT day, was THE MOST PAINFUL person to play against. He, on every move(including deployment) measured 2" between every one of his Nid Horde. EVERY ONE!!! This took a standard turn to about 45mins(on movement). He then bought up every rule that was in the book, forgot ones that did not go his way, and was Arrogant to boot. This same fool walked up at the end of the Tourney and asked for a recount. Nuff said about Chonga. The name of the game in my opinion is about entertainment.

has anyone even looked at the entire list of stats?

it doesnt make any sense who placed where you had 3 guys who ended up with the same over all score yet the guy with less tournament scores ends up winning?

none of it makes any sense

I have a bit of inside info here... as I actually won 2nd for sportsmanship in Chicago last month...

I only got one vote for fav. opponent and still won?!?!?!  Well... I posted a few weeks back on how a judge called a ruling really poorly and lost me my game 4 because of it. I would of had a 4-0 record after that game but because of the miscall by the judge I took a minor loss.

After the game, the judged came and confirmed that I got hosed, like... really really hosed!!!... I did not flip out... i told them how disheartening it was but I did not burst out in an uproar. The judge told me that they had alot of really bad sports out there... people who would simply not play until they got what they wanted...etc.

Later that day during awards I recieved sportsmanship. I knew i had high scores for it... but jeez... that many. WOW.  Turns out... really I only had one vote for me specifically when I looked at the numbers recently.

Anyhow, looks like they take special situations into account... at least for sportsmanship.

Just my opinion.

Well that is some truly amazing info theblklotus, very interesting. You got hosed with a bad call, then re-imbursed with a sportsman award? is that correct? That was what I got out of your statement(I may be wrong!). Well then, it looks like it is always up to the Judges who then might change thier minds depending on whether they stuff up.

CRIKEY HOW CAN YOU STANDARDISE THIS????!?!?!?!?!?!?

That is what I got out of it... Again... tis only my opinion of the howz and whys... The numbers dont lie and as I do think I am a good sport... I know there were others that got picked for fav. opponent more than me.

I think my observation is pretty accurate as to how/why. At least for 2nd place. LOL.

Ozzymandius, WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN?????

There MUST be a way. I have been keeping up with the posts, and it seems as if there really is one thing laking in the GT's. STANDARDISATION!!!

Maybe only three questions, not based on whether you lose or win.

1. Was your opponent fair with rules?
2. Did he/she(we wish!) take thier turn in a timely manner?
3.Were they a gracious loser/winner?
4. Did you lose or win?

Maybe there is a Maths/psychology nut out there who could use a quick flow chart to see how the number 4 answer would be a % removed/added off questions 1-3?
