The Roughtrader looks great. Reminds me to a little bit to Gary Oldman in "The Fifth Element" as Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg.

Yep, I had a similar thought but he reminds me of Tony Stark in the Iron Man movie played by Robert Downey Jr.

Amazing paint job on the face, kudos man.

I still mourn the smile girl though, I really liked that and was looking forward to the overcoat sculpting and other additions.
No chance of you finding a want to finish her CM?

The paintjob on the RT's face is awesome. My faces end up as smudgy little flesh colored blotches with MAD EYES...

Yeh I was also looking forward to seeing the smile girl.

Just watched Alien Ressurrection again last night - I quite like the crew of the Betty as inspiration for an =I=munda gang - but then I have also been thinking of a Necron Cult based gang... lots of bionics etc. maybe counts as Redeemers.

Mind you having said that I see a lot of guys doing Tau / Guard auxilliaries and now im thinking a Tau Expansionist gang - goes on "preaching campaigns" to draw border worlds into Tau Space... might have an Ethereal Cast leader, maybe a Tau and IG heavy and then some human preachers etc.

Thanks, the torso is from one of the cadian tank commanders from Forgeworld.

Hmmm, I've actually gone off that head completely. Was thinking about re-doing him with a different head....got some plans for this but its prob a bit off time-wise for the time being.

Lol, not for the time being anyway. I liked the concept but the model started annoying me a bit. I think there is a lot I would change if I went back to re-do her now. I certainly feel my skills have come on a bit since then.

I'm sure I've seen a group of IG or something based on the crew of the Betty before somewhere. The only thing I'm always wary of with necro and =I=munda gangs is having really obvious movie type casts, such as "the bad ass weapon guy" (think Blaine in predator, the black guy in Alien Res. etc), "the silent assassin", "the crippled doctor" etc etc. I prefer groups to have more detailed and in depth character. Afterall, part of the fun of working on figures as individual characters is trying to convey their personality through their pose, equipment etc.

At the same time though, movie type cast gangs can be a fun change of pace!

More soon.

Cheers,

Dante

Inspired by IceSword (Warseer) and his Victrix Napoleonic French conversions, I decided to get a box myself to convert up a new Rogue Trader. Something about the last one I was working on was just bugging me and when I saw the Victrix kit in Ice's log, I knew the parts were perfect.

The one problem though with the Victrix plastics is the fact they are noticeably smaller and thinner than GW figures. Therefore, I have decided to do some significant GS work to bulk up the figure and make him taller. Without further preamble, here's where I'm at so far (note - still very WIP, the boots etc are just base stages):

I've actually done a bit of a sculpting tutorial on this for my good friend Grey_Death and the painting advice group he runs called The Painting Corp. So if you want a better insight into how I sculpt, check the site on Tuesday when the article goes live. In fact, you should check it regularly anyway as the guys there post some great articles, tips and tutorials on a massive range of modelling subjects, I know I've learned a lot from them myself!

Hope to do a bit more on this chap today. Basically the whole figure is going to end up covered in GS so that he doesn't look out of place size wise amongst GW figs.

More soon.

Cheers,

Dante

He's still in the early stages so I can't comment much on the rogue trader, but if you are using some Ice swords rogue trader private army blog as inspiration I will no doubt like the final result. On a side note, where is that arm in a sling from? I like it a bit more than the original lasgun that he was holding.

Cool can't wait to see more. Keep wondering about using the Victrix kits for a guard army at some point.......

"From dis day to da ending of da world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
Us gitz, us happy gits, we mob of boyz;
For he to-day that smashes stuff wif me
Shall be my fellow Ork; be he ne'er so vile,
Dis day shall make him proppa Orky;
And umies on Armageddon now-a-bed
Shall think demselves accurs'd dat we're 'ere,
And be right scared uv anyfing green whiles any speaks
That fought wiv us upon Saint Ghazghkull's day."

The sling is from the same Cadian command set as the lasgun was. He's now being converted into a heroic banner bearer.

Cheers mate. The Victrix kits are good value for money but the details are a bit soft and lacking, they are also noticeably smaller and thinner than GW figs, the weapons and arms especially!

Some nice parts, but I was a tad disappointed.

Cheers,

Dante

Dante, which sized clay shapers do you use? I've been wondering for a while now how you get such fantastic folds in your sculpts, and I think I need to get myself some shapers after labouring with the metal tools for ages.

Thanks mate. I use size zero "0", I think they're the smallest ones?

The bullet tipped ones are best for doing folds as you can see in the tutorial.

Dante

Firm for the bullet tip shaper and soft for the chisel head. I use the chisel headed one for most of my smoothing and shaping.

Nice tutorial Dante, you mentioned that you used the Gale force 9 sculpting set, is it of good quality? I only ask as I was thinking of buying it myself.

@ Deff Dread - Not really, the half round end and the pointed tool are the only useful things. On all the bladed ends, whatever they coat the metal with had burrs on the edges which made them almost completely useless. When I removed the burrs, it removed the coating and made things worse.

I think its probably worth spending more for better tools.

Cheers,

Dante

I've found them pretty good myself, though I agree the only useful ones are the round ended smoother and the long stabber.
