Where ever I am...

Now see Iv been looking around, cause Im going to be starting up the Space Marines again, as soon as I get out of the Marines, and I took a look at alot of the known chapters, which are recognized by GW.  Many of them are very appealing, but I like the new idea of the doctrines.  Now for many of you who play out there, that may have used these new doctrines in tests, or play with them all the time, which is better in the short and long haul?? And WHY?

When was it cool to not be a Marine?

Custom. I say this being a Dark Angels player.

If you go with an official Chapter you'll be stuck with it when the Space Wolves 7th ed. Codex says "Space Wolves always and only come in squads of 7. They also don't have any heavy weapons anywhere in the entire army! Hurr!"

With a custom Chapter you can ignore some of GW's stupidity since usually at least 1 of the 5 Codexes is playable at any given time. You can just hop around to whichever best represents your army.

Well Redmond, I have been playing 40k for about 19 years now(started in '87) and I have to say that the GW SM specific Codexes SUK.

It seems to me that a Vanilla marines list, with Trait advantages/Dis-advantages PISSES all over the est. Codices. There are always exceptions to the rule though.

EG, Space wolf scouts reserving in on your opp. side(WAY COOL)
Dark Angel Army Commander on a Land Speeder, etc-etc. There is a few reasons to take these, but not enough in my opinion.

I have always played marines(Boring I know-but I hate filthy Xenos!!! lol). I have NEVER bought a Chapter specific Codex. I like being able to have a 7 or 6 or 8 or9 man Tac squad. I LOVE putting 2 Assault Cannons with my termies.......... All of these are OPTIONAL when you have the 4 ed Codex-Vanilla.

If the Blood Angels/Space wolves/Ultra-fags etc. are interesting to you, you can pretty well make them from the 4 ed Codex-Vanilla.

We will wait and see what everyone else thinks...........................

The drinking halls of Fenris or South London as its sometimes called

Its true the normal codex can be used to make better chapters for gaming then the other codexes like DA< SW AND Ba however what these DIY chpaters lack is the history of some of these first founding chapters. Come on I play SW. you cant beet there fluff, SPace vickings who sometime go werewolf on your ass. YOu could do something similar with a DIY chapter but come on at best they will be Space jackal/fox/rats. A second rate chapter to the mighty Sons of Fenris.

Exalt.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Hey Redmond, welcome to dakka.
I've played ultramarines for almost 10 years now and with the latest advent of the traits and special codecies I've started using my Ultras as what I see fit. For instance my "ravenwing" is mearly the 9th fast attack company on bikes. My "deathwing" is the 1st company all armed in their terminator armor. While my "blood angels" are just the 9th with jump packs and some "crazy tyranid hunters" who just happen to flip out and rend everything in site.

Basically it all boils down to what paint scheme you like best. If you're happiest with painting your marines hot pink with purple leggings and using the black templar rules, thats fine. Just make sure your opponent knows "hey these guys are crusader squads, and this big MoFo over here is my champion."

I second (third, etc) the notion of having a custom chapter. You have the flexibility of playing however you want if you have your own chapter, rather than being forced to play a certain way because you are painted in those colors.

Original chapters all the way. Unless you're really, really, really into repainting your marines every time a GW artist has a new idea, or redoing your army to meet whatever madness is possessing the design team this year.

3+ roid monkeys are overrated..

But I would make a DIY that could then use everyones rules.. Even Spiky marines. So paint them black and call them the Chameleons (of Doom (optional)), The bastards are always copying other peoples fighting styles.

Even though I havent been able to respond as fast as I would like to, I do like the Space Marine traits idea.  The Known Chapters...I love the fluff, and its always obvious that they are going to have all those cool special charactors and charactoristics where your not adding extra points, but I like the way I want my Marines to look...the name Im still working on, but Im wanting them to be the way Id want to...sneaky and packin a punch...so I think after all the replies, Ill be going to a custom chapter.  THanks guys
