Ikim on Ogre Stronghold put this up:

Yeah, way blurry, but pretty clear the actual production prepaint is underwhelming.  This whole "Rackham only does prepaints now" deal is, at best, unfortunate.

Wait until you get a close up look at Abel the Ill-Painted.

It is horrible.

I think the best we can hope for is "underwhelming" as far as the C:AoR pre-paints go.

Actually, the best we can hope for is that the prices aren't too high and the "pre-paint" works great as "pre-primer".

I think some of the AT-43 stuff looks okay, painting wise. Is it really worse
than that? That's what it would take for me to call it a bad buy.

Lets not be overly dramatic. Oh wait, its the internet. My apologies :-)

The face needs some shading or at least a wash on the version I picked up. And the base needs work. But the rest of the mini isn't that bad.

Prepaints have their place, if only to show us where to touch up. I was just saying the studio versions are great. How much do you think people would pay for mini's painted like that out of the box?

At Studiolevel most gamers couldn´t afford a whole army. Already half an hour of painting ups the price quite some levels. I think many mix up pro-painted with pre-painted.

Not much. Many gamers tend to be a cheap bunch with painting for some reason. (My guess is that they frequently overestimate their abilities and undervalue actual skilled labor.) Those that will pay for well painted figs already do.

And I can't imagine the prepaint looks worse than most of the half ass paint jobs you see out there. Or bare metal/half-primed.

Well, you may have picked up a slighter better pre-painted one.

At the risk of sounding overly dramatic (again, apparently), the one I saw was, yes, horrible.

I had the same experience with AT-43. The prepaints from the first starter kit we opened were terrible, and really put me off. But later boxes had much better quality.

I strongly object, however, to being shown studio-painted figures instead of the actual production models.  I know the Rackham studio painters are amazing, but I am not going to be purchasing their work in my FLGS.  Show me what you intend to sell me!  Still, credit to Rackham for labeling the studio jobs as such.

Would you pay £7-£10 ($15 - $20) for this?

(Images ripped shamelessly from http://www.conf-federation.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=10317.0 )

That's what the asking price for Rackham's PPP "heroes" is so I'm assuming the same will hold for CoAR.

Obviously core troops are less (currently 6 or 8 for £20 depending on function in the UK).

The trouble seems to be that the "man-sized" models are more fiddly to paint, but aren't so impressive.  I've got no quibbles with the end quality of the AT-43 walkers but the man-sized models are looking underwhelming.  I've bought a few, but I'm not leaping through hoops about them.  I'm justifying it to myself that I'll buy enought o play a few games then when I get bored I'll bung 'em on eBay.

$12 USD - that's what it was selling for, if I'm not mistaken.

Edit: I paid $10 USD for my Sgt. Borz, which is a single hero in a box.

I wouldn't, but that's an exaggeration.

Atis-Astarte. Sgt. Tymofiyeva, and Sgt. Borz have US MSRP values of $10. That is the actual normal price of a hero. Ten bucks.

Newton has a US MSRP of $15. I don't know why she is more expensive. Edit: Cpt. Vrachov who has recently arrived stateside is also $15. It seems price is related to rank.

There are no heroes more expensive than that, except Omega Tiamat, because she is monstrous.

The figure's sculpts aren't as good either. They seem alot more flat. I guess thats because they have to be one peice for prepainting. I was the biggest supporter of Rackham in my area in 2005. [Correction] Two years later I just hope they don't ruin too many employees lives when they go under.

Boo at prepainted crap fest.

You know, I'm not going to get into a debate about sculpts. Everyone has their tastes, no one has to like anything by any company. But if you're going to make informed remarks about the sculpts, it would at least pay to have seen one in real life. They're multipart, and the statement that you think they're one piece shows you haven't really ever seen one.

I'm sorry, but I am NOT exaggerating. For instance Captain H. Newton retails for £10 in the UK and Sergeant Borz for £7. (See, e.g. http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/una-miniatures.asp for an example retailer). That translates to roughly $15 - $20, although I am aware your prices in the US are cheaper because they exclude sales tax but these include European VAT. Notice to all Rackham sockpuppets: please check your facts before you criticise my posts . What the ACTUAL CoAR hero prices will be I haven't a clue, but there's every reason to believe that they will be same as for AT-43. I.e. absolutely stupid for what you get.

besides how bunk they actually look, I'm surprised how much smaller than the actual confrontation minis they are.
In my opinion they look crap, and I'll stick to it at that, my opinion.

Okay. Fact checking time.

Fact: You said $15-20 for Abel, a low ranking hero

Fact: Actual prices of heroes are $10-15. Abel, being a low rank hero, can be just about gauranteed to be $10.

You can compare conversion rates all you want, but that's not the facts. North American customers don't pay those rates. You used dollar signs for the $15-20 and that means dollars, so obviously you were talking about USD prices. The US MSRP is equal to Rackham's Euro MSRP, even though the currencies have different values. Don't call me a sock puppet just because my opinions differ from yours.

Better than heroclix, and at least it isn't collectible?

Would have to repaint to fit my griffon scheme, and not a great price for a bad plastic fig.

se la vie.....

I still need to pick up some last Confrontation figs before it all goes away.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

I actually quite like the Wulfen. The sculpts (or at least the heads... no more ears pinned together at the back of the head) appear to be better than the metals, which may just tempt me into buying some to repaint.

me too.. I hope they manage to take out the employees... shareholders... company management... people playing the game.. all of it.

Switching to pre-painted needs to be seen as the gaming equivalent of setting off a car bomb at a market place.

I actually kind of liked the prepainted first army. I forgot what they were
called (yeah, I didn't buy 'em). But the red blok minis I saw today weren't
all that great.
