I have never seen anybody use Ratling Snipers. I have never seen a painted unit of them. I have never heard of anybody using them, ever.

I could have sworn they're in the latest edition of the IG codex. Are they really that bad?

I like them, and if I have the points to spare and more importantly the slot to spare I run them.  They are good, but with the Veteran doctrine 3 units of deep striking vets with 3 meltas or plasma's are normally a better asset than ratlings even with how cool they are IMO.

They're not bad bad, but as Bebepaquito mentioned you need to not only have the points, but the elites slot and the doctrine point. I'd almost rather have another doctrine than ratlings.

In my happy place, I'm in my happy place...

I have seen them in the occasional list but the problem is that so many things are immune to pinning one of the great tools for the unit is of little value. And where some of the other races need to wound big things on a 4+ most IG weapons will wound MC's on a 2/3+.

I've seen some people use them. They are not bad really, its just that there are better things that can be taken in their place, so most people take the things that are better.

I think when it comes to the elite slot for Imperial Guard the rankings are like so:

1.  Veterans-  the simple fact that they get infiltrate and deep strike (doctrine) for free, can take 3 special weapons, and have BS 4 makes them the undisputed champion's of Elites' in my book.

2.  None deserve this spot.

3.  Ratlings-  hitting on 2's wounding on 4's, free infiltrate, and the "go to ground" rule make them even better.  Toughness 2 hurts though.

4. Ogryn's-  3 wounds a model makes them a great assault unit, however Toughness 4 and only moving 6" does not.  They are often left out of the fight due to the fact that they are slow.  They are a bit too expensive for the two huge flaws that I see.

5. Stormtroopers-  2 points more expensive than veterans, 1 less special weapon, having to pay for infiltrate and deep strike keep them off my roster.

6. Techpriest Enginseers'-  Never used them cant really comment.

That is how I look at the Elite slot.  Feel free to let me know what you think.

I agree with everyone here,

All in all,
veterans are just the better choice because you can mini-max your special weapons.

Ratlings are nice,
but as said before, pinning isn't a big enough threat to stop things and toughness 2 is hilarious!
I personally love snipers (as an idea) but if you want a sniper there are much better snipers available to IG (albiet really expensive and kinda needing a HQ) to justify taking a ratling unit.

If you took a couple ratling units,
that would be sweet,

you would have to go all out otherwise not enough of a punch.

:-)

I use 10 of the Ratling models in my Space Marine "OZ" army counting as Scouts. They represent The Lollipop Guild of Snipers & are perfect representations of futuristic munchkins.

IMO their only use. It's a good one though.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Someone would also have to have the models. Which would be rare for a unit they wouldn't use that often.

The BS4 vets get more play, but I've seen them occasionally. Really quite a decent unit. Regular guard are wounded on a 2+ by heavy bolters anyway, so the toughness really isn't that big a deal.

Pinning being virtually useless is a bummer, and most Eldar armies don't use Wraithlords anymore, so they don't often get to shoot at those anymore. Still, they work quite well against Avatars, 3+ save Dakkafexes, and the new 3+ save Daemon Princes and Greater Daemons.

I think the bigger issue is that most players using IG theme their force around real world armies, and Ratlings don't quite fit in.  Once upon a time the GW vision of IG, including concripted hive world gangers and cultists, penitents, religious fanatics, and scummy abhumans like Ratlings, Ogryn, and Beastmen was a much more coherent and unique take on a far future army.  But that's kind of gone by the wayside as most of those units/that fluff has gone away in favor of more modern-looking homogenous armies.
