Wow, bubble nose looks cool. Nice reinforcement strips.

Wagon: is all that's needed there.

Buggy is nice and grimy.

Rosie is very cool.

and that last chap looks very shifty, best keep your eyes on him, he's up to no good.

Nice job on the tube truck the window looks the bomb, paint work on the ping pongee buggy is really coming together well.

Judge truck has a fitting scheme and I would go blue for the windows or maybe a green.

Rosie did you get the bots and display piece, I did just for the bots to be honest

Did you convert the chest plate to chaos then ? It works quite well but have you considered altering the helmet a bit.

That truck is awesome. For the Paddy Wagon I'd be tempted to go with blacked out windows so leaving them black with a glazey effect.

Dr H - Thank you. Wasn't sure they were going to work as well as they hopefully will

Justice Dept is rollin'

Not grimy enough yet

Yep, didn't even want to convert this one

And yes, he is very shifty.

dog - Glad the nose bubble seems to work, I think that'll be a focal point on the finished piece.

Basing the scheme on the one on the Mongoose website as I have no colour references for any version of the pat-wagon. Blue...for now

I got two of the display sets in case I wanted to make a small squad out of the 'bots With the bonus of having another Maelee for conversion purposes, along with the version from the original KS

Yep...and nope

Moltar - Thanks dude! Hopefully some of the exciting things will actually make it to a finished state

Llama - I considered gloss black with a slight blue gem effect, but the main body is too black for that to stand out I feel. I'll try blue first and see how that goes. Not sure how a gloss finish will look on the side windows as there is a slight texture to the sides of the piece - as though it's been built up in tiny layers.

So first up a little bit of colour for you lucky people (not a lot, but don't knock any chance to see colour on this thread )

Pat-Wagon:

Added edge highlights to the red and yellow, put down some metal ready for a wash. Had to retouch some of the black on the body where excessive handling had rubbed some off Put a layer of Caledor sky on the glass. Will get minimal weathering except around the damaged fender.

Did notice when painting that I'd missed various clean-up tasks before diving in with the colour - missed a few air-bubbles, and on the back fender the lights are pretty messy -

And a few washes over the traitor:

Ouch - missed those mould lines too

Couple of ogryn washes, runefang drybrush, ogryn wash for the armour. Green then grey washes, with touches of flesh and sepia for the uniform. uUmber shade for the puttees, boots and gas mask. Yellow glaze on the eyepieces and gas fittings. Umber wash, runefang drybrush, blue wash on the gun. Baal on the hoses.

Few weeks back I saw an interesting looking kit at a local model show, but I'd already picked up a few bits by that point, so left it. Then went looking for it on the net this week and found one on e-bay:

Look at all those girders and the like

And it's worth mentioning the actual vehicle it represents - The Bagger 293, the largest vehicle on the planet :

And I'm sure most who follow this thread are aware of it, but Skalk is running a junk pile terrain contest http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/563097.page

Go check it out, loads of interest, small piece, lots of fun to be had

I'm in, and will be making a couple of pieces, just to keep people guessing as to which is my entry (also handily providing me with options if my choice doesn't work out )

My starting pile of scrap:

Bits of broken cameras, mice, pens, wire, plasticard off-cuts and various other items....

Decided to use a minidisc as the base to fit in along some of my other bits, but found it was a mil or two larger than the 60mm base, so filed it down a bit first.

One piece gets a wall from matchsticks, and a pen gets sacrified to make up some oil drums. Now to figure out the ridges, could use some strips of thin plasticard, but I have another, more 'scrappy' idea to try first

Yanno...

I can see the 3d printer lines throughout the entire vehicle. They went to production without even a simple acetone 'bath' to smooth out all the pieces.

Ugh. Just...ugh.

Dr H - Yeah, it was bugging me that I didn't pick it up at the show, so indulged in a bit of retail therapy

Thanks! Me too

Llama - Yeah, that's a big ol' box it comes in, the finished kit is apparently a tad over a metre long!

So, it seems I haven't quite got my mojo back yet, spent large parts of the evening just staring into space, not even thinking about the models....but still got a little done. Apologies for the large amount of pics and explanations, but I'll need to refer back to these to give Skalk a full list of components

Onwards with the oil drums.....
First idea was to use some wire under strips of paper (cut from an ork flyer instruction booklet), was planning to smooth the paper over the wire and glue wire-side to the drum to give it a ridged look. Unfortunately I didn't think it through fully and used superglue for attaching the wire - this meant the paper was then too stiff to properly 'wrap' around the wire. So I glued the paper side to the drum and gave it a coat of pva.

For the second attempt I stripped some PC connector wire, was planning to wrap it 2 or 3 times around the barrel to get the ridged look. It needed to be long enough to go round the requisite number of times as it was proving difficult to keep single lengths taut enough.
It wasn't long enough....

OOPSIE...hit submit by accident.......

So...wire failed....decided to use the insulated wire from an old led, and use double strips....worked reasonably well, but not really straight enough Covered in pva after to help the appearance of ridges rather than external wrapping.

And for the third I just used different widths of paper strips. I didn't have enough left of the led wire to do another...oh well

Three different designs of oil drums so far. Any more will probably use different styles again.

And realised I should have scored some circles into the lids too, but hopefully they'll be covered in enough junk to not notice...

Cut up a plastic spoon for a support girder.

Cut up some plug covers to make up storage containers. Also visible is an attempt at using garden wire to make the oil drum ridges - that just wouldn't get snug enough against the pen to work.

Cut up some card packaging to make brackets (should have used that instead of paper for the drums really...), using the little tiny balls from a water filter as rivets, glued into guide holes. Theer's a shelf there made from half a 20mm square base.

The box I brush clippings, off-cuts and loose basing materials into. The detritus at the bottom is what I'll use for basing.

Cut up a used cotton bud for the pipe, put a small piece of mesh and a couple of bits of round sprue down, then glued on some of the ground cover around the wooden wall. This area will get some basic colouring done before it gets hidden behind junk.

The mini-disc had the central hole covered by some plasticard off-cuts and a bit of mesh, and the other two oil-drums got glued down.

And a quick lick of paint - you can clearly see how shoddy that ridge-work on the drum is - have to apply plenty of rust to distract attention from the sloppy build

Thanks for stopping by, please put a paw print on the visitor's wall on the way out....

Edit for vik due to my clumsy sausage fingers hitting submit part-way through a post

That's a whole other project bubbling away

A lot of things I reckon....mate at work asked if I was going to turn it into a big feth-off toxic waste carrier, and I had to say it was going to be turned into lots of things

We'll see, there's going to be some tough competition in this one

High praise indeed from vik...thanks

Dr H - Cheers! Yeah, that would give the look I was going for with the paper/wire combo. I did consider using those ties, but there was only one badly twisted one in my box, so.....

dog - Thanks! Well, what sort of mek would I be if I couldn't make use of the available resources for a variety of uses hey Unlikely, most meks aren't overly bothered by keeping plants near their junk piles, err..stock inventory. Except for the few weirdos messing with cyber-flora.

So....

Getting a feel for how some of the junk fits into place.

The makeshift bench is a piece of waste from a laser cut kit - get some useful shapes out of those. Sitting on top at the moment is part of a lensfinder from an old camera, and a small motor, possibly from the same source. Below that we have a piece of plug cover, a usb port cover and a block of plastic, which again I think comes from a camera...not absolutely sure on that one, can just remember the struggle I had removing the rods that went through it...

Against the wall there's a couple of good old cotton bud pipes, with a gear from an old scalextric car sitting atop the drum - a wheel from the same source i mainly hidden behind the girder. And there's a couple of boxes from plug covers beside the tyre.

Added some bits of card, wire, cut up brush protectors, sprue and part of a press stud to the view-finder to make it a bit more interesting. Also glued parts of it so that the spring was stretched out.

The USB cover got a hinge from a bit of insulated wire, a catch from tiny scraps of plasticard and a handle from some staples, hopefully turning it into a tool box of some kind.

Broken watches provided screws and cogs for the shelf, and an old pen proved to be a good source of plastic tubing for some cans. And sitting on the drum is a crude pulley formed from more discarded pieces from a laser cut kit. Turned out a little big for my planned use, I'll see if I can knock up something a little smaller before it gets used.

Bit of a keyring, more cut-up brush protectors and pen refills, random bits off a circuit board (from a kind of hand-held computer thingy), bits of match and a chain from an old tea-strainer get added before the first layer of basing materials get dropped all over the place.

Bit of colour and test placements. Added various bits of wire to the plastic block to add interest, another pen part, cotton bud pipe, insulation from a wire and a metal rod - that I think originally held a watch strap in place - added to the storage bin.

weety - I have the advantage that the interior of my boat looks like a junk pile, it's just having good reference materials Watches, calculators, any old appliances - I've been kicking myself because I had to replace my boiler just before my re-emergence on dakka, and I was so out of touch with my inner mek that I just junked the old one without carving it up

dstein - Cheers dude! I does like me a good bracket now an' then I had four pieces planned, and before I started I knew which was my planned entry - with two coming together and bits being piled for the others I'm no longer sure Plus there's still the possibility of finding 'that' piece of junk - found some stuff at work today that has me thinking in another direction

Radu Lykan - Ooh, new face - welcome
Hey don't be discouraged by other's work, there's always someone out there whose skill makes you feel humble - on Dakk alone there's a whole bunch of peeps who I look up to and whose work I don't come close to. It's sharing in their work and seeing what they do that helps us all grow as modellers (and maybe painters if you're into all that colouring-in stuff )
There's several categories to enter, the scale of the piece is easily accomplished in a couple of weeks - look through this blog and you'll see how slowly I work - but above all it'll get you a finished piece of terrain.
Go on jump in

No update today (see Radu, that's my kinda pace - can't even stick a bit of junk to another bit of junk in two days ), but a shout out to Rich from Green Stuff Industries for being an all-round good guy
I have the tentacle makers from Masque Miniatures, as some of you will be aware , but had been thinking about getting the GSI version for extra mix'n'match fun, and because their design nicely negates the need for something solid to use as a rest/support. I had ordered a set, left it a few weeks before tracking it as I knew customs like to grab my US packages and sit 'em on a shelf for a while
When I did track it I found it had been delivered a couple of weeks previously, but had not made it to my desk I contacted Rich to see if he could get any form of POD from USPS, as their site didn't seem to like us Europeans using it He had little succes and was tryingt o see if Paypal had any thing about 'delivered' packages that go missing. I didn't hold out any hope of that and told him I'd re-order and asked if I could get a signed delivery. He came back to me and said he had a set with cosmetic damage to the outside only, which he didn't want to send out to customers, but would get it to me for cost of postage

Mentioned because it arrived today, and I mailed him to let him know I had them and would put in a good word about his service

Away for business tomorrow night - wonder what bits I can scavenge from the hotel

Dr H - Nothing to see here, just some old junk

The GSI version is more convenient as you don't need to have a nice solid block to square up against, it's more self-contained.

vik - Cheers bud! Don't think any of my otherideas will be ready so it's going to be one of those two pieces....

graven - Well, I had fun with the Masque Minis version, I'm sure I'll have more with the GSI one

Ruglud - Yeah, that was the look I was going for, but with only one twisted old tie I had to look elsewhere These can be orky made barrels

And cheers!

Skalk - It is - see below, but as Brian pointed out, the texture on the sides shows artefacts from the 3d printing of the master. I have noticed that although I've had mine a while now (hell, I've managed to get colour on it ) it's not up for retail yet. maybe, hopefully, possibly, they've had second thoughts about putting that master out for retail?

Some arbites and a waving marine for scale reference:

So, mojo is still pretty much MIA, progress everywhere is slow
On a personal note, I'm now aware of why my mojo is slow in re-appearing - I've been diagnosed with depression, prescribed anti-depressants and referred for counselling. So, I'm guessing progress will continue to be slow for a while yet.

I will persevere with hobby stuff, but fair warning that updates will likely be less spectacular and even more random than they were before, as my focus is even more fragmented than my magpie genes normally allow for.

So, with that in mind what small random progress has actually occurred recently?

Very little on the possible junk piles, but there's no way I'm going to be completing anything other than the first two pieces, so it'll definitely be one of these that gets to be my entry.

Just noticed the gubbins from on top the 'bench' is missing in that pic Plug cover storage, scalextric wheel, cog and motor in place and painted. Other random assortment of junk still getting coloured. Verdigris on either piece doesn't look that bright in RL, but there'll be more weathering to both pieces once all bits are in place anyway to help bring things together.

Put finishing touches and started in on the p-word for one of the terrain pieces, messing about with various weathering techniques. Used AK Interactive heavy chipping fluid on the main body, acts in a similar manner to the hairspray technique. Put down a heavy layer of powders on the door which I've fixed with artists fixative, going to try a thin coat over the top and rub away to reveal the rust effect underneath. With a little work that would work very well for heavy corrosion on it's own though.

And re-purposing an old piece of fantasy terrain, as I figured the circular shape fits nicely with most of the other ongoing terrain bits. Used to be a wooden hut based on cardboard, cut away the top layer of card and transplanted the whole thing onto a cd before starting to add on more gubbins.

Well, it's goodnight from me...and goodnight from squig.
