Hey folks,

I've been giving though to how I would put together a Tanith First and Only army. There are only so many Tanith models that were produced those are pretty few and hard to find these days. So, I've been looking around for conversion ideas for the Ghosts. Most of the threads I've seen have talked about using Catachans as the base for them, with GS cloaks. While I don't mind using the Catachans for certain conversions, I think they're way too bulky for most of the Ghosts (Corbec, Kolea, Bragg, and Brostin excepted) so I've been looking around for some more lithe models I could use. After looking through all the human lines in 40K and Necro, I decided to take a look at what WHFB could offer me.

Enter the Glade Guard plastics. The Empire and Brettonnian lines didn't really have anything, but when I got to looking at the Wood Elves and saw the plastic Glade Guard, I saw some potential. While the outfits of the Glade Guard are pretty un-uniform-like, they have some really nice cloaks and some great hooded heads. Plus, I figure if you use a dark color scheme and add a good amount of pouches, grenades, and other bits that the non-uniformity of the GG outfits won't matter as much. From the pics of the GG sprue, it looks like you get 4 sets of legs per sprue, 4 archery torsos (with arms attached), 4 torsos without arms, and 4 cloaks (with quivers sculpted on them). I guess I could use the armless torsos either on the GG legs (although it'd be interesting to see what they look like on Cadian or Catachan legs - particularly the kneeling ones) and either file the quiver off the cloak or GS it into a musette bag and top it off with Cadian lasgun arms.

Is there anyone out there with experience with the Glade Guard plastics that could tell me how viable this might be? Even better, are there any Wood Elf/IG players that could let me know if this is a reasonable conversion before I go out and spend some money on the models to find out it just won't work?

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks,
Jacob

Yeah I think that that project sounds like a huge pain in the but. I have a wood elves army so I have used quite a few of those glade guard sprues.

So the main problem is scale. The wood elves are very slender and sleek. The parts would not mesh well with any other guard parts needed to complete them. The arms are way to slender to support the guard weapons.

My biggest problem personally is that the style of the wood elves would take a lot of effort to cover up and make it look 40k.

That's kind of what I was wondering. But what if you straight used Cadian arms instead of the slender WE arms?

Would it look pretty strange to use a WE torso, cloak, and hooded head with Cadian arms and Catachan legs? Would the torso just look weedy in comparison?

Have you considered Necromunda Orlock gangers (http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=List_Models&code=300817&orignav=300808? These are not as muscled as the Catachans.

I have considered the Orlocks. They'd need a lot of converting. Head swaps for all of them to start off with and at the very least weapon swaps for many of them. And because they're metal instead of plastic, 1) they cost more, and 2) they'll be a bigger pain to convert.

I don't know - I'd need to see a good Orlock->Ghost conversion to convince me. They just don't seem stealthy enough.

Frankly, if the Ratskins weren't clothed in rags and bones, I'd use them, but they're not that useful for this either.

You know, my first reaction was the same as Jezrael´s but looking at a mock-up this might actually work:

ESDK - you rock! (I mean, from your extensive converting and painting work, that's already a given) But that was exactly what I was hoping for - that someone might fit a couple of these together and take a pic. Wow. And they look really sharp, too. The quivers definitely need to come off and they could use a little more 40k-ification. That's exactly what I was hoping they might look like.

THANKS!

Sweet conversion.

The only problem with the quivers is that they're modeled on
the cloaks.

I'm hoping with the quivers that it's nothing that a dremel and some greenstuff/IG gubbins can't fix.

I've used the Wood Elf Cloaks for an Eversor Assassin conversion, and it came out fine. Dremeling and greenstuff should work fine, but I just ended up covering the dremeled area with a backpack.

I'd almost want to recommend that you go with the Catachan plastic torso/arms/legs and greenstuff the webbings and what not. That way you can use the Female Catachan grenade launcher figure as well as the Ox Schaffers Last Chancer as a fill in for Bragg.

You know I'd thought of that, and Ox does make a great Bragg model, but I'm thinking of building a post-Bragg/post-Brin Milo Ghosts army. The female Catachan w/ GL and the Rocket Girl figure are both nice models, but there's enough female elven heads and torsos that I should be able to build some female ghosts - a good Jessi Banda or Tona Criid.

My thoughts are having the bulk of the army being Tanith First and Only using the WE/Cadian mix for my infantry, building some stormtroopers out of SM Scouts and painting them up as Phantine Skyborne (who fought alongside the Ghosts on Phantine in Guns of Tanith), and including some armor representing the 8th Pardus Armored (who saw action with the Ghosts on Hagia in Honour Guard and alongside the Phantine XX on Enothis in Double Eagle). My ultimate goal would also be to scratch-build a few Thunderbolts to use as members of Phantine XX Umbra Flight. But that might just wind up being a pipedream.

Very cool...I'm a huge fan of the Double Eagle book as well, and decided to do a Phantine special forces drop troop list. I'm using a combination of the Cadian FW Rebreather kits and Stormtroopers.

I totally like it except for some of the softness of the WE peices. If you could armor them up a little with some green stuff I think they would be great. Maybe give more hard edges to the organic armour plates.

I did not think of using the guard arms instead of the WE arms. They deffinently make the model a little more substancial and there fore more tough.

Those shoulderpads should be removed too, it would make them less bulky.

I like the shoulder pads, though they could use a bit less pointy of feet I think.

Considering the Ghost's specialty is stealth, I'm not terribly offended by the WE boots. And for that matter, I like the fact that the shoulder pads are there to show that these guys aren't just WE with guns.

Though that being said, ESDK - I don't suppose you have a pair of Catachan or Cadian legs you could easily swap the WE legs for, do you?

We´ll have to make do without Catachans. Interestingly, while the WE torso on its own is much too small for the Cadian legs it´s not really noticeably with a lasgun in the way. But I lean more towards the combination of WE legs and Cadian torso which is a much better fit. You would have to cut down the neck guard for the hooded heads and make room for the cloak´s peg though.

Once again, ESDK, you come through with the pics! You are a scholar and a gentleman!

The Cadian torso does look pretty sharp with the WE legs - surprisingly so. And without the lasgun and cape, the difference between the WE torso and the Cadian legs is just silly. One of the things that really appealed to me about using the Glade Guard torsos, though, was the ability to use the female torsos to represent female Ghosts in the army.

While the Cadian torso/WE leg torso is nice, considering the fact that the Cadian torso will largely be covered up by the lasgun I don't know if it'd be worth the money for me to go with that mix. That being said, there are some folks selling both Cadian and WE bits on Ebay for a really great price, so it's not like I'd have to buy boxes of both to make this work.

Now, I just need to come up with an armylist I like to figure out how many I need to make!

Thanks for all your help, folks - ESDK, especially you - your pics have really made this viable for me.

ESDK, can you slap together another pic?

Cadian torso+cadian arms/lasgun on the WE legs, head/cape.

The cadian torso looks surprisingly good on the WE legs, and the Cadian arms look really good on the WE torso. My only question would be whether the cadian torso AND arms will still look good, or will it make the WE legs look too small?

See, personally, I'm really digging on the hoods. Not on all the models, of course, but a solid portion of them. I'm going to have to look around and see if I can find some Catachan arms to try out with them, too - though I'm worried it will make them look too much like they've got professional wrestler arms on skinny-mini bodies.

I find it amusing the elf torso with guard legs looks so poor, but a guard torso with elf legs looks so cool. And I love the hoods.

I like either the full elf torso/legs with Cadian arms, or the Elf legs/Cadian torso and arms.

Keep the shoulder pads and hoods...thinking about stealing, I mean borrowing this idea!
