Ah yes, the d1000 mutation table...

Long, long ago I had the original Realms of Chaos books. They're gone now so I despaired of ever using the d1000 mutation table again until I learned the wonderful truth, it was also printed in White Dwarf 99!

So now join me in enjoying the wonders of this issue...

It starts with the cover

which might be the first ever appearance of a chaos marines. Y'see the mighty, mighty Rogue Trader rules had no, zero, nada mention of chaos. they had mutants, they had warp creatures but no Nurgle, no Khorne, no Black Legion, no Horus, no Daemons. Those came later.

In White Dwarf 99 in fact.

But we'll get to that soon.

First off an ad for Heroquest

If you don't love that ad, you're a communist. It's everything we love about GW in one wonderful image.

The sneak preview page has some treats as well

WOW a Space Elf Dreadnaught! I hope they keep that model in production for 20 years!

And something about chaos renegades?

Good idea but I wonder if they'll ever be as popular as the squats.

Some new models for 40k

This one is worth clicking on to embiggen. I have like 3 or 4 of them and would love to have more. The two female warriors have been a source of controversy for years since apparently they were also called female space marines.

And some pre-craftworld, pre-aspect Eldar

And the first Orky dread

I think that's enough awesomeness for now. Alas Chinese New Year is over and tomorrow is a work day.
More soon.

I shamefully admit to really really liking some of the old guardian models, I think the more grunt ones that came out after the bunch here. No love for the musicians from me though, as hilarious as they are.

But ... "mince n' tatties" ..?

<gives a Randy "The Macho Man" Savage "OOOH YEAAAAH!! to d1000 tables>

Frankly, it was d1000 tables that got me into 40k. I'd picked up the WDs talking about them before I ever bought the RT and the concept was just so out of this world that I knew I had to buy the game.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

I can't seem to "enbiggen" your pictures.

Heh, "mince n' tatties" indeed!

A lot of the material from the Realm of Chaos books was reprinted in WD.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

& we're back!

First off some clearer images of the big scans.

& now some content!

As I said the real draw here is the D1000 MUTATION TABLE! I mean 1000 mutations + sub tables! It's awesome!
But I won't get to to just yet.

Because first we have THE LEGION OF THE DAMNED!

Like all proper marine chapters, their symbol is a SKULL! Scary stuff there!

But who are they? Where do they come from? Surely they are mysterious and their origins are lost in the mists of time?
Right?
Um...

Nope, 3rd rate marine chapter, caught the warp flu, decided to wear extra (x2) skully armor.
This is a rare case where I think GW's later fluff was better. I never saw this article so my first exposure to the LoD was in 2nd edition which just had them as a mystery. I remember arguing with my buddies what their orgin might be.
Anyway, one thing doesn't change, since they wear BLACK armor they have SUPERPOWERS!

Other new models include the mighty Ambull

the mighty attack bike

and the mighty tarantula, mole mortar and land speeder, collectively marketed at DEVESTATORS!

& we also have an article on martial arts in Rune Quest featuring this great image of a ninja versus a... whatever that is. Yeah. Good luck with your kung fu man.

Coming soon...

Who says GW is getting worse with their products? At least nowadays, when you buy an attack bike they see fit to give you the crew as well.

& we're back!

With an indepth examination of the Runequest martial arts system!

Or we can just skip ahead to the:

d1000 MUTATION TABLE!

yeah, thought so.

The d1000 MUTATION TABLE! is simulatniously everything that was right with 80s GW and everything that was wrong.

It's massive, takes up 11 pages, has 36 (!!) sub-tables and such wonderful ideas as 'silly walk' and 'mechanoid' (roll for which body part). It's awesome.

It's also completely unbalanced - well my mutant got a metal body, invisibliity and levitation. What about you? Um, horrible stench, mane of hair and spots.
And more importantly, completely unusable in a miniature game!

You see you were supposed to play a campaign where your character would start out as an ordinary human and rise in they eyes of the chaos gods, mutating and gaining power until he ultimately became a demon prince or a chaos spawn. And your model was supposed to WYSIWYG! So in these days of lead models and no bitz you might suddenly have to turn your elf ranger into a half-spider!

It would make a great video game but as a mini game?

Oh and you were supposed to roll for your units too, so not only would you have convert each one according to random rolls, but somehow convince your opponent you really did roll up metal body, duplication and acid blood for each one.

But still the ideas were brilliant.

I mean, not just blood substitution, but 6 different options! Maggots! Electricity! It's mad!

I'd love to see someone do a chaos army using this chart to model each unit (d3 mutations per unit).

I should also take a second to put to rest and old ubran myth about this chart. You will notice:
061-068 Black Skin
Now back in the day you would never, ever see a miniature, art work or photo of anyone in White Dwarf who wasn't that gastly shade of pale common in those blighted isles. So naturally some people saw this and assumed that the paleskins of Nottingham were saying that African hues are a sign of evil.
Well the description is worth looking at:

So there you are, 'black skin' the chaos mutation means BLACK. Not dark brown.

Anyway the issue ends with a preview of the Treacher Legions!

For fans of retconned fluff we have:
"The Treacher Legions have been extinct for millennia, but they have spawned other legions of imitations: warriors whose appearance apes that of the Legiones Asartes but whose armour maskes a corruption of the body no less disgusting than that of their sickening minds."

So Abbaddon cannot be the original, he's just a poser aping the real, long-extinct, traitor legions.

A great bit of nostaglia here.
And sadly, shows how WD & GW have devolved in a way.

Sure, the background was hazy, the art... meh... BUT, the magazine wasn't just a multi-page advert for new stuff. It actually gave you something you could use in a game. Whether that be chart tables, new rules, stat lines, or card stock buildings or whatever.

someone should write the random mutation script.

I got very agile
temporal instability (on roll of 6 disappear for d6 rounds then reappear in the same spot)
and an irrational hatred of elfs

Not bad.
