I'm pretty sure that there haven't been ANY pics of the miniatures in the upcoming 40K 5th edition box set yet...

Here's a few questions, in general:

- Do skimmers still not block LOS?

If they don't, skimmers now offer a 4+ cover save to everything behind them. Inneresting.

- Do intervening /troops/ units count for determining cover to a tank?

If so, putting your LRC behind a bunch of footsloggers might be really, really, /really/ inneresting.

Also - think Tau. Disembark your gun drones in front of your Devilfish - 4+ cover until the drones are gone from that facing?

(This seems a little far-fetched to me - tanks in current rules can't take any cover from friendly units. I doubt they can in the new edition... but. Interesting thought, anyway, if all cover is now a 5+ save for a tank..)

- Fast-moving skimmers being obscured -

Tau Disruption pods - free smoke outside of .. what is it, 18", every turn? Hammerheads now have a new required toy, and can move slower each round (up to 6") and still gain smoke effects - thus firing everything.

Eldar tanks get an interesting choice each round - move slow and shoot everything, move fast and shoot very little. Doesn't this + blast rules make the prism even hotter than the falcon? Plus - you can charge prisms, keeping two out of LOS each turn...

- Run! is a great rule - making infantry that much more versatile. Doesn't this make the new cover rules that much more interesting?

(Running more disposable forces into a firelane /after/ your units have fired down the clear path, thus giving cover to everything behind them?)

- Interestingly, with all the increased foot mobility.. haven't decisive shooting units gotten that much meaner?

No more wholly lost turns with something not in LOS (due to better LOS rules), Run! enables you to make decisive movements with standard troops instead of emplace and just shoot...

I'm really, really intrigued by the new cover rules. Anyone heard anything about target priority, or are the new cover rules everything?

(TMCs and other freely-targetable stuff may sure be freely targetable, yah.. but now they have mobile cover, don't they?)

Johangrimm, you have some good points there. Your idea about drones giving cover is neat.

Something else not explained yet about Tau is the smart missile. Since it ignores LoS and all cover now works on LoS, perhaps SMS always ignores cover?

That would kcik ass. And offset the fact that our troops (aside from kroot) now suck.

Killkrazy: Things can still block LOS. An intact building or a big refinery or something. Its just that area terrain no longer blocks LOS.

I disagree- drones giving cover to vehicles would blow. In fact, any intervening infantry-sized model giving a tank cover blows. Remember folks, we're going for _realism_, or some semblance thereof, not game-breaking "tactics" based on rules glitches.

I'd like to agree, but this is also the set of rules that tells us that more strength != more penetration, that you can somehow miss with a blast weapon, and that infantry can move as fast as most tanks.

When a guy on a horse moves faster than a high tech skimmer moving full-out and you can only hold an objective if you're designated a 'troops' choice, then all realism went out the window.

Yes, however the point about Tau SMS is it does not require LoS to hit the target.

Realism broke a long time ago, about the time they decided that a Bolter has the effective range of a Paint Ball Gun.

Can anybody who has played with the rumored rules describe the impact of the 4+ cover save on their games? I fear I won't be gunning down infantry as much anymore because only half the guys who I previously killed will actually go down in many circumstances.

Any practical advice for a Tau player?

It is some what realistic tanks in combat often stay at or under the speed of the infantry support. Everything else is valid.

No significant change against most of your opponents for most of your weapons, i.e., most of your weapons don't deny armor saves, so MEQs will still be using their 3+ save over 4+ cover anyway.

Markerlights. Markerlights. Let me think..there's something else...

Oh yea, Markerlights.

Burn them to deny your opponent an armor save (or make 4+ a 5+ or 6+). Sure you have to field more pathfinders to get markerlights, but pathfinders give you an extra tank hovering around to block LOS to other things.

Just a thought, take it easy.

As far as cover saves for tanks, we really don't know but the pdf rules did have the shoot the big ones rule regarding partially obscured MCs and vehicles. I think the safe bet is that this will apply to the rumored 4+ cover save as well. Otherwise, if the interevening model cover save is determined via model eye/weapon barrel view, then most tanks/mc's will shoot without granting cover saves. All the while gaining cover saves themselves. Would be pretty borken.

So are you gonna be loading Kroot in your tanks too? I hope the rumored rules change for tank taxis is true and I hope the FAQ doesn't stop me putting Krootoxen in there.

In my opinion the value of Kroot is their cheapness and large squad size. Adding a Devilfish limits both. Improved cover and movement speed for infantry should make Kroot more valuable without mechanising them.

I think the T'au would rather die than have the possibility of having to clean Krottox dung from the inside of their Devilfish....

... please tell me that GW did not specifically state at some point that Kroot don't poop? I mean, good lord, do we REALLY need to know that? In what context does that possibly become relevant?

That is one mystery of the universe I was happier not knowing

It was in the original Tau codex. Kroot do not poop. Instead they exude metabolic waste products in the form of a heavy, slimey sweat all over their body.

Kroot are not allowed to ride in Devilfishes because they would mess up the upholstery.

Thus fluff is specifically supported by rules!

As a matter of interest, birds do not poop and pee the same way as mammals. Instead their wastes are processed through a single exit channel called the cloaca. This is why pigeons make such a mess all over the place.

Sometimes I think GW does all their creating while passing it to the left. There are rules questions that are completely unanswerable, and many more that are quite debatable, but we know without question whether Kroot poop. I am glad THAT was cleared up...

I did know that about birds, but only because of highschool biology. I wouldn't have been able to pull cloaca out of my ass though, or any other orifice that serves a similar purpose, for that matter.
