Three things I've noticed over the last month in this thread:
1) It's getting more and more awesome
2) Less and less people are posting (with the exception of the last few days) because either we are really running out of complements or you've left most people pretty speechless. Don't know how those talent show judges do it...
3) You're getting more and more crazy. Not as much as me, but I can tell all that pink went to your head Hopefully you'll return to normal while painting your Marines.
^ That last one was a joke, don't take it seriously ^

Hi all,

I go away for a couple days and kablooey, several new posts. I was at the Colonial GT fighting forces of the false emperor with my Sons of Pus. It was a fun weekend and I look forward to attending next year.

1. Thank you!
3. Yeah, I have had my fill of pink for awhile and am ready to get back to something a tad more ... normal.
2. I wasn't surprised. I think I have a few reasons.
- The last several updates have been essentially the same and if you seen one part of a pink pig you've seen them all.
- It's a natural cycle of people reading the forums and not reading.
- People can only post so many "atta"-boys.
- Reciprocity. When people take the time to post something in a thread of mine I will, at the least, look to see if they are maintaining a P&M blog. I don't always leave a comment (for various reasons), but of late I haven't been keeping up my end of the exchange (once again for various reasons). Everyone starting a blog likes to be recognized even if it is "atta"-boys

Thanks. This Hamm is spelled with two "m"s. So is Pixar's Hamm.

Thank you! Currently no plans for Slinky, but you never know. I would like to have at least all toys from all three movies.

I've been working on tactical squad Ultra. I've been layering gray onto a few models. I am waiting for GW's new white. It is listed under the heavy or base color so hopefully it will cover better than other company's whites. I'll post photos once I have few closer to completion.

Thanks and take care

Fantastic job on Hamm and dealing with all that pink

As for the tactical squad and GW's new white, I really hope that it can cover well. It'll save a lot of time painting if it does...

Cheers!

HI all,

Just a small update.

I started painting tactical squad Ultra. I put down a few layers of paint on the Veteran Sargent.

The gray layer was fine, but the white was more challenging than I thought it would be. I picked up GW's new base white, but haven't used it because of another project.

It can be found here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/441831.page
I need a small break from Space Rangers and I figure this diversion will take about three or four months to finish. Probably just in time to find sixth edition totally nerfs the army

I plan to paint the knights in a manner very close to Hamm
I also want to try a couple techniques before using them on Buzz.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Okay, it's been over two years but I'm ready to get back to this project. The main reason for the delay was my inability to find a way to paint white quickly, yet still look good. The test model below took about three hours to get its current state.

The paint is thick and splotchy. So what it lacks in quality it makes up for in taking forever to make it look so bad.

So finally being fed up with the project I needed to move onto something else - finishing a Tau army http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/480933.page than some GK Paladins http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/511844.page. than http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/557548.page
What can I say, I have a touch of the gamer's ADD.

About four months ago I purchased a air brush and such. One of the reasons was because I thought it would essential to complete the Buzz Lightyear army. I didn't want to start with marines so I broke out some old Warzone plastic models that have been sitting in stasis. I figure this will give a chance to practice with the air brush and hopefully get closer to finishing this project. The plan is to use the test models as Militarum Tempestus.

I've watched hours of videos on how to use an airbrush. One technique regularly featured is pre-shading. Pre-shading involves using black paint in recesses and bottom and using lighter shades if gray from a level position and white from above (spraying on top of model). This looked like a very good place to start. So I mounted the pieces on paint sticks and sprayed away.

Heads

This looks like a better place to begin.

For the first model I used a Concrete wash to cover it entirely . Ugh. To dark. I spent a bit of time building up white. So far this isn't going to work.

Next one I used Pale wash from Vallejo. This worked out much better. If a spot needs to be darker I can add more Pale wash or a spot of concrete wash. It was much easier to build up layers of white (VMA White).

Test model #3 shows a bit cleaner progress. I used pre-shading for green and purple and used a couple layers of Reaper MSP clear for each color. The bluish colors are Reaper MSP Ocean blue triad. Reds are MSP Fire Red triad. The white diamond is from a IG Cadian decal set.

The base is sheet styrene with cork underneath. A variety of paints and washes were used. I scratched it give a more weathered / rough look. Not exactly what I had in mind but it works well enough for me.

After coating the model with Vallejo satin varnish it was attached to the base and a mix of pigments were used to add a bit of texture and break up the grayness of the base.

I will be adding some static grass and leaf liter for a bit of character and to offset the brightness of the white.

Test model #4 is very similar to #3. #4 had a bit more pre-shading gray visible with than #3.

Overall I'm very pleased with the test models. The plan is to have a command squad with Hot-shot volley guns, one unit of ten with two meltaguns, one unit of ten with two plasma guns, and one unit of ten with two flamers (though this one is iffy).

One question, does anyone have an idea regarding the shoulder pad diamonds? I want to have all the right shoulders look the same and left shoulders used to differentiate squads. Use different colors, or use a dot or shape inside the diamond, etc??

Thanks and take care

Two years?! Time flies! Great to see you and this project back in business.

As for the squad markings, I would go with the dot/shape inside the diamond.

Yep, two years. I've been busy but just on other projects
Now it's time to put a serious dent in this. My sons are getting older and I want this to be their first army.

I'm thinking "ZR" on left shoulder (Zurtron Rangers) and a colored square/circle on the right.

Hi all,

Getting a bit closer to a finalized version!

In the last post I mentioned putting a "ZR" in the diamond on the left shoulder. Yeah, that didn't go so well. First attempt at painting a "ZR" started bad and became worse. Between the small lettering and my inability to focus on something so small (curse you father time) nothing looked acceptable.

Having a "Z" and "R" isn't going to work. It makes it to small. Looks like "Z" will stand alone.

The second attempt involved using decals/transfers. One problem, where to find a bunch of "Z". I have many, many transfer sheets that have been collected throughout the years and I figured there had to be something useful.

I searched and searched until a winner was found.
There are five usable "Z" on this sheet.

Take a closer look
Here are two.

Here are three.

Did you find them?
For those you haven't. I used "N" and rotated it. Pretty sneaky, amiright?

Here is the almost finished product.

The "Z" fits nicely. I will add a bit of gray to the edges to provide a little highlighting.
Also, a few bits of leaf litter (for color) and some static grass were added from the previous version.

The right shoulder insignia comes from a Gorkamorka transfer.

I still need to add a wee bit of gray to the square.

The gun barrel needs to be weathered a bit with SWM metallic iron pigment.

Overall, I like how this is progressing. The white looks a bit worn and weathered which I prefer to the New-In-Box which was originally intended. Thanks goodness for happy accidents.

If anyone has any thoughts, ideas, critiques please feel free to post.

Thanks and take care

Nice use of those obscure transfers. They fit perfectly.

Thanks. Just a wee bit of blind luck finding them and working well together.

Test models are complete!

I added a bit more color spots to the hot-shot lasgun and sides of backpack.

Test Model A-

Test Model B -

Closer view of water effect. I may add another layer of Secret Weapons Miniature's Realistic Water. I added some Tamiya Clear Yellow and some splotches of SWM Cotton Candy Wash.

Test Model C -

Okay, so a plan is in place. Time to finish about twenty more just like them

Hi all,

Just finished two meltagunners and a veteran sergeant which means test squad is complete.

Veteran Sergeant

Meltagunners

Squad

There are a couple of test models which will be painted to the other models in the unit. Fortunately, because of the MechaniCon's point level I only need five of the ten.

Work has begun on the next unit of MT (plasma guns) and a MT command squad with four hot-shot volley guns are in the works.

Thanks and take care
