So I got green fever ever since I picked up the AoBR box. I've been all about the orky tide, reading up on painting and modeling them and just overall getting a feel for the army. I still however need to go pick up the current codex. All in all, I'm thinking the army is going to be a fun diversion from my meticulously painted Grey Death Marines. The army will be done with speed painting in mind. I don't know how large the army will end up being, but right now I'm happy to keep them at the 500 point range as I get used to them and get the models I have on deck finished!
One thing I'd like to bring up is how TERRIBLE the AoBR box is about mold lines. I love that I get TONS of models for cheap, but you pay for that cheapness with the ridiculous amount of filing and shaving you're going to end up doing. It's worth it in the end, and I just ended up doing most of the clean up while sitting around waiting for calls at work ^_-. But it didn't make it any less frustrating as I looked at each new piece absolutely miserable with the things.
So how will I approach these boyz?
I'm going to be doing flat basecoats followed with either dipping of heavy washes to add the depth back into the model. I'm also thinking of going with Goffs as black is always an easy color for me to paint with some speed. Plus, who can beat checker markings on orks? I'm also thinking of some heavy weathering for the metalwork. Fiery orange makes for easy oxidized weathering for orky weaponry, and I've used it before on my epic orks (who are still unfinished at this time x.x.). The orange is also a good break up color for all of that black and metal. A few spots will end up with some gryphonne sepia washing as well to vary the metals even more, this will possibly be followed up with some verdigris weathering. As you can see, I'm all about variation in my weathering these days ^_-, just see necros' thread for his chaos marines!
What do I have done so far?
Well, as I said, all of the mold lines are gone. I've also drilled out all of the gun barrels (I actually have a bit that fits for once!). Basing is already down. And the priming is finished as well. So that leaves us with lots and lots of paint to slop on in the coming weeks!
To give you a better visual idea on how the army is progressing, a few WIP shots should suffice!
Basing and Assembly Finished
Gun Barrels and Priming Finished
Stay tuned and as more is finished, I'll be sure to update with new photos!

Welcome to the green tide there Grey. Cant wait to see what you will do with the Ladz I love so well. Orks are alot of fun. Though DA are my first army and all but I have been playing and painting the orks from 2nd edition to now. They have lost alot of the full in not allowing the clan spacific armys but you can still paint them like the clans and that leaves alot of room to do stuff with. I have been on a bit of a hobby break recently but have loads of boys to add to the crazy amount of stuff I already have. http://www.pbase.com/the_vypers_pit/orks
Thats a link to some of my Ladz in case there will be some inspiration to do yours. Keep us posted on your progress.

There is a speed painting guide for Orks on CMON which is excellent, I think it's by Lemmingspawn who's here as well.
How do you do your basing? Looks really good, and I've been thinking about basing first of all for a while. How do you get a clean edge, no glue and muck down the sides of the base?

Something about seeing so many Orks on the painting table and ready to go just brings a tear to this Warboss's eyes. Lookin' good. Once you go Ork, you never go back. Pretty soon you're gonna want to take those Death Greys and take 'em apart just so ya have more bits and pieces for Konverin' Orks with.

When I pick up black reach, I'm gonna paint up all the orcs too instead of trading em. I wanna try something different though, instead of the usual goblin green everyone does.. I'm thinking for the skin I might try rotting flesh as the base color with a green wash and then maybe a little gryphon sepia too. I wanna try and get a muddy, dirty green instead of a bright neon green

Is it done?
It looks like it would glow in the dark.
Too bright for me.
I prefer earthier greens for Ork skin.
OTOH, the SKILL of the painting is good (which you already knew LOL).

Is it bright green with a brownisch wash?? It looks ok, but I am with magick on them being a bit too bright right now...
Finish the figure and then a Squad to get the best possible impression. It might be ok if it is a whole gang like this...
Everything looks better with many of the same colours. even ultrasmurfs (when painted right) look better on the field with 40 buddies...

I agree on the brightness. Of course orks being basically fungus I suppose it isn't too hard to fathom them with some sort of phosphorus in their skins. Would make being kommandos a bit hard though.

Thoughts?

The right is preferable, but it's like the right highlight with the wrong undertone. I prefer a complementing green with them, as opposed to the brown.

That green really pops. I also noticed that you painted red over the eyelids as well to make them appear larger?
What are you thinking for the body? If you keep a large portion of their clothes black or very dark brown, the skin will remain a very cool eye-catcher IMO.

I've given both a glaze of snot green. I'm trying to see what a green wash would do for me in terms of color at this point.
Blackbone - I painted the red over the eyelids because I was in bad lighting ^_-... As for the body, I was thinking of staying dark. But I'm tempted to go with brighter colors on the armor plating. We'll cross that bridge when I get there x.x...

Post-glaze both schemes look very nice. It helps even out the brown wash recesses. With those two it's a matter of preference at this point. They both look good, now you just ask yourself if you prefer earthy-camo orks, or 2nd Ed. brighter orks?

I think that that style of painting is better suited for metal, and armor, where the massive contrast works to your favor. On skin, or at least this batch of orks with this paint scheme, the contrast is too much.
That being said, I like the one on the left better.

My vote is also for the one on the right. Still very cartoony, but it is a bit less bright which to me is a very good thing...
keep up the work and post a pic of the finished figure soon...

Both options look fairly convincing at this point. I myself, like the brighter one (the one on the right). it looks a tid bit more "evil" and ferocious.
the left one is just as good an alternative though.

Alrighty. Some more work done. I'm set on the 'base' coloring of my boyz at this point ^_^. I want to thank everyone for their input, it's been very helpful so far.
Where we stand as of now in the color scheme mockup:
I'm still not 100% on the rest. I guess I just need to go with something and see what I think.
After working with red a bit on Chaplain Cassius though...I'm thinking it might work it's way into da boyz world much more prominently than first thought...

Got the first model finished at last! It's taken a while to really hammer out all of the colors and methods I wanted to use, but this is a final product.
I've also come up with a fun idea for the theme of them boyz as well. I'm sure you'll figure it all out when you see da name of da boss!

Cheers folks!
It's funny how such a simple effect has gotten so much attention around the web ^_^. Folks really seem to be drawn to the rust effect I went with. The great part is that it's only two colors! Stipple vermin brown on in an erratic pattern and then stipple fiery orange over that so you get blotchy coverage. Tada! done!
I'm really impressed with the level of quality from the AoBR box. Like I've said before though, the mold lines are damned near a deal breaker...good thing the box is only 60 bucks!
As for da Boss, I'm not really sure where to start, but I know the big boss ain't gonna be da AoBR boss. I'll have to convert up a proppa Pattun, as well as give em a proppa sherman to command!
I'm currently in the process of block painting all of da boyz skin. Probably the only thing I'll get accomplished today, but it's a lot o boyz! Pics at the end of the night of my progress! Stay Tuned!
