Hi,

As a long time lurker of dakka, and i do mean LONG time, i've recently been inspired to actually start contributing to the site, so following a short experiment with posting on other peoples threads i've decided to bite the bullet and post up some of my work for critique.

I've been collecting Warhammer + 40k + almost everything else GW has produced since about 1990/1991, but its only been in the last year or so that i've really picked up a paintbrush. As such i have a huge backlog of models and armys, all patiently waiting for their time to come.

I intend for this log to showcase the work i'm doing at the moment, but also to display the models i've painted over the last year, including my 1500pt Cadian all infantry army, 1300pts of Sisters of Battle and 1000pts of World Eaters.

To get this started i've decided to post a converted Adeptus Arbites with power maul and suppresion shield. I intend to use this guy in an Inquisitors retinue as a Crusader. He will be backed up with another 2 similar models, along with 3 "acolytes" with carapace armour and shotguns. I feel this will be the best way to get a small amount of Arbites into a conventional 40k army, especially armed the way they are.

The model itself is a metal space marine scout, with its head removed and replaced with the head of one of the old Adeptus Arbites. The Power maul is simply a cut down space wolf power axe. The suppresion shield is a cut down chaos warrior shield, with the gaps filled in with green stuff, an aquilla from the IG tank sprue and a vision slit made out of a track link from an IG tank. He was based with one of the brass etched pieces from the 40k basing kit, along with some razor wire. After being undercoated black, he was painted with GW foundation paints + inks, along with a bit of boltgun metal and shining gold.

I've provided various views of the model, some with flash, some without. Enjoy.

Hopefully i'll be able to take some more pictures next week, starting with my IG.

Look forward to reading your comments. Hopefully this log will eventually lead to a blissful state of nirvana, where all my models are painted and none have to feel unloved.

Yeah right.

Hey, that look like a nice conversion, interesting use of bits, specially the vision slit for the shield.
The power axe -> power maul conversion is classic, and looking very good.

The paint job is a bit more difficult to comment on, the pics are a bit grainy, but it looks like you´ve got some highlights on the blue, and that´s always a good thing.

All in all, very nice model, show us some more!

Very nice Arbite - classic look of SM Scout w/ Arbite head and bladeless power axe for the power maul. Sharp stuff. I look forward to seeing what else you've got!

I really like the conversion, apart from the view slit in the shield. I don't think it fits with the rest of the conversion and breaks up the asthetic quality of the rest of the minature. Nice highlights on the blue!!!

Very cool. I was thinking of making a similar face conversion for my knight themed Space Marine Chapter. It'll be tough, as it'll be my first 40k project, but with these nice references, I may be able to pull out something decent.

Update Time.

So i've been working on my Imperial Guard recently, trying to turn my 1500pt pure infantry force into something a little more flexible. First up was finishing my Commissar, based off Yarrick with a Chaos Marines Plasma Pistol and Power Sword.

First time i've tried doing any sort of special effects on a power weapon, normally i just drybrush them boltgun metal and move on. Same with the Plasma coils on the pistol.

Quite happy with the paint job, although seeing it magnified on screen makes me cringe at all the little mistakes.

Hope you like it.

Oh and guys, thanks for all the kind comments on my Arbites guy, hope this keeps you interested.

Update Part 2.

So i've been a busy boy. As well as the Commissar i've been working on a squad of plastic Rough Riders, made up from Empire Pistoliers, Cadians and Bretonnian lance arms. Since these pictures were shot i've green stuffed cloth folds onto the lance arms and added reins to the free hands. Very happy with the overall effect, although not sure about the pose on one of them, looks very narrow and "straight on".

Hopefully should be able to start painting them over the weekend.

The sharp eyed ones amongst you might notice the shotgun one of the riders is carrying. I built this up from a flamer and a lasgun and have used it on my three hardened veteran squads. If anyones interested i can post a little tutorial on how to make them or show some shots of my vets.

Hope you like em.

Nice job and thanks for sharing. If I was to give any constructive criticism, it would be that it looks like your highlights should be thinned a bit more, just using a bit more water. The base coat looks nice and smooth, but the slightly dusty appearance of the brighter colours could be improved by just thinning it out a bit more, maybe doing two or three thin layers in place of one or two thicker layers. Keep up the good work!

Nice work on the Commissar!

The rough rider looks good, but I have one nagging thing...

Why is there a pouch and grenade attached to the end of his lance?

If anything shouldn't you put a power pack like thing there to signify the hunting lance rules?

Darksword - Glad you like the shotgun

Joyous_Oblivion - The pouch is going to be painted up as a power pack. That and the grenade seemed like quite a convenient way of turning it into a more solid looking hunting lance.

More updates tomorrow of the earlier work on this army, including a hardened veteran squad, storm-trooper squad with chimera and an infantry squad.

Yeah, I'll second the call for a tutorial on your shotgun - it's pretty terrific-looking. I'm a big fan of the Arbites shotguns and the metal shotgun that came with the OOP metal SM Scout Bikers was great, too. The new ones on the plastic Scout sprue are pretty good, but yours is considerably better.

I've also had problems trying to figure out how to make an appropriate 41st milennia hunting lance. As much as folks mocked it, I like LunaHound's chainblade lance here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/227260.page. You've got a nice simple solution there, too.

Updated again.

Decided to photograph some of my models from just over a year ago, inspired by the American Uniforms in Black Hawk Down. I wanted the body armour to have a chipped, worn-in look about it, hence the metal highlights. Remember this is over a year old, i'd like to think i've got better at painting since then, particularly skin. The Rough Riders will be painted to match up with them.

First up a plain old infantry squad.

Next, a squad of hardnened veterans with shotguns, plasma guns and a storm bolter for the sergeant. The men have sculpted carapace armour to tie them in with the stormtroopers. Shotguns are based off the pattern seen on the Rough Rider, Plasma guns made from the other half of the flamer + old ork plasma gun + chopped down voxcaster set.

Chimera, which i actually painted last week. Ran out of desert yellow before i started so i decided to have my tanks a slightly different colour to my squads. Tank commander has an extra plate of body armour added over his stomach.

Finally a squad of stormtroopers, pictured with their attached chimera.

There you go guys, more updates to follow, including a tutorial on how to make the shotguns, which i hope to do tonight.

Looks like the shotguns are the chopped off end of a flamer (used to make the plasma guns). Reverse the flamer end, and stick it to the back half of a lasgun.

Really solid consistent paintjobs with all of these. Very nice. And I'm still loving the shotgun. Thanks for the close-up on that.

Thanks for the kind words all... its really encouraging to hear them.

Next up, my WIP basilisk with armoured crew compartment.

and with the top section propped on.

I'm trying to make it look like the forgeworld armageddon pattern basilisk. Since the pics were taken i've added the roof and finished off the side sections, now just need to do the rear including the door and then add some detail.

comments + criticism welcome.

Another update on my WIP Basilisk.

So i finished the armoured crew compartment, added various bits of details, created a rear door out of the original top of the basilisk shield along with cut-offs from the rear platform and then riveted all the new sections. Only thing i need is two round hatches, one for the obviously open hatch at the front and one for the top section.

Sadly, the ones i need are at my parents house and i wont be going there for a few weeks now.. oh well, plenty of other projects to work on in the meantime.

next mini-project, a squad of Seraphim + Sister Superior for my Witch Hunters army.
