This is a test model and wanted people's opinion on the skin color of the Ork as a move away from the traditional green - trying for more of a green hue with predominant flesh coloring. The blending and highlights aren't as smooth as it is a test and there will be several more flesh blendings to go if it was not a test. Photo on a 2mp phone camera - will do better later tonight.

Grey undercoat
Tallern flesh applied all over
generous wash of Thrakka Green
Tallern flesh first level, leaving recesses unpainted
Thrakka wash
Ogryn Wash
Tallern flesh to start building up muscle
Progessively adding elf flesh

So, not sure if it works - appreciate C&C and honest "hate it" or "like it" feedback.

I like a quite a bit actually! Other than wanting to stray from traditional green is there any other reason for the colors you chose?

The coloring still has a mushroom/fungus look to it so fluff wise it seems very reasonable. I actually immediately thought of the movie The Descent when i saw the pic. I would be interested to see the completed model to see how you finish the teeth and clothes to compliment it.

I think it is looking pretty cool at this point. Any reason for the new skin tone or just a creative itch that came across your mind?

Indeed I also like it when people want to go with a different color other then green. I still think Im going green as my ideas of other colors just didnt seem to make me happy.
BUT that tone your going with looks pretty darn good for being a test. Try it for real and lets see what happens?

Brown orks work for me. Reminds me a little of the RT era ruddy-brown orks.

I tend to say that you should abandon the green colour totally and go into something brown or red. the old coloer "lepreous brown" springs to my mind I do not know what is it's equal nowadays. As it seems you have some top skill when it comes to painting so you cannot do this much wrong.

The reason for the change is just to do something different. It may not be an army idea - it will probably be a one off piece painted for fun and enjoyment. Not being a conveyor belt painter, to fully paint an Ork takes me approx 3 to 4 hrs - painting a 100+ of them is just are route to insanity.

I did consider the red/ brown idea with grey under tones but decided on the green undertones to stick a little bit with the Ork background.

I will try another set of flesh combo's and post those up. But on a side note, those photo's were taken at my desk with an LG ENV with a desk lamp - barring the last one, I was quite impressed with them. The next batch I will try and get done in my light box.

as a skin colour it works, but I don't love it for orks, somehow it seems more suited to Nurgle or undead, for that slowly rotting flesh look

I once read a very interesting short story, the premise behind it was that the smaller the ork and the lower in the pecking order he was the greener he was (still a fungi) but the bigger, higher and angrier/meaner he was the more likely he was to turn from green to a muddy/ruddy brown to reddish brown to brownish red...

the other thing was that the orks could "smell" color - blue for sleeping, dead, undead, braindead or in fear, green was regular contented, yellowy / browny = excited, red to purple was super excited or angry (in blood lust)

just a thought

The scheme is well done, but I have to say it isn't for orks. Orks are green, not brown, blue, or red.

i love the idea, makes a change from the usual green of everything.

I think it looks good, thats how I always imagined a human/ork hybrid to look like in 40k.

I think blue or red(dish) orks would look great as well though and still be a logical choice of colour as plants can be of almost any color there is.

I'll add my vote for the positive, I like non-green orks and love the mushroomy color this belligerent fungi ended up with.

As far as batch painting goes, it gets easier with devotion and dedication, as well as practice. One of Gray_Death's Friday Tips addressed the difficulty of painting in batches that's helped me complete mine: do one step on the whole group of models at a time. If you miss something on a model, set it aside or put it back with the unpainted boys and stick to your step. After you've got the mob painted at that "level", go back and do your touch ups before moving to the next step.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I like the colour scheme, but if it was me, Id have made it more greyish & less fleshy. If you see what I mean. More like tolkien style orks.

still, it works well. Id like to see the finished model though.

OK. I will do a test on that this weekend and post up an update. I will add grey to the Tallern as a base and maybe using rotten flesh to highlight upwards instead of using progessively shades mixed with elf. That should give it a combo of the grey/ flesh with green undertones.

If I have time I will see about the brownish tint.

Thanks to several AOBR box sets I have plenty of test subjects!
