Those pictures look great it's an amazing army.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

I don't really know the overall cost. The individual prices depend on when and how I obtained them. I got about 40 Hybrids and the Ash Waste Gangers when I bought a guy's 40K collection. Those were pretty cheap.

I also bought a chunk of Hybrids at a GT in one of those old Trollboss Bob bitz by weight deals. I think those cost me $1.75 apiece. If I'd known then what I know now, I would have bought 150 of the things.

The rest -- minis, bitz and supplies -- weren't cheap. If you're looking for metal Hybrids, be prepared to pay around $5-10 apiece. Overall, I guess the cost was pretty high, but I got lucky that it wasn't completely ridiculous.

Absolutely awesome. Great color scheme too!

Just curious, how has the 'counts as' army been received by GW and other opponents in tournaments and friendly games?

I have a 'counts as' army I would like to work on, but I'd have to use one of the codexes that is unrelated to the topic army. I'm sure there'd be confusion despite my explanation of each unit, etc... Any thoughts on the subject?

Thanks in advance.

I like it.

Looking through the models and what they were supposed to represent there wasn't anything that seemed like it didn't fit.

The Emperor doesn't seem to do much for you but you sure are expected to be mutilated, suffer, and die to make him happy. And is he dead or what? If he's entombed that would mean he's dead as a doornail, right? So, how can he be happy about anything you do, or even give orders to anyone? Are you worshipping the dead now? Is that something you'd really want to do? Because it sounds freaking creepy to me.

I think it's natural for an opponent to have a slight bit of trepidation when facing a counts-as army. What you have to do is 1) make sure your counts-as works well, and 2) take time to walk them through it. In my army, any time you see a Hybrid, it has an Ork Boy statline. That's pretty easy once you know what you're looking at. Usually once the game got underway, people "got it" and became pretty comfortable.

One thing I underestimated is how little people knew about GCults. So while I thought a Patriarch as Warboss is just an obvious and natural fit, it required explanation up front. Here's an interesting point -- IIRC, I didn't get a single Player's Choice vote. Now, Player's Choice is a different animal than Best Appearance and involves different strategies if you're seeking that award. But I'm fairly confident that one factor that worked against me for PC is that some players had no idea what a GCult is or should look like. They were probably scratching their heads a little.

So the exact nature of your counts-as is another variable. For instance, players probably have a decent grasp of what an Adeptus Mechanicus or Kroot army should look like. Jokaero, not so much. Players would probably be more comfy with the AM or Kroot. The GW guys at the event were pretty supportive of my army, although there you're talking about veteran gamers who might be nostaglic for GCults and the like.

IMO, it's kind of a crime that GCults were left behind, because they're very characterful and a really important army from the early days of the game. I realize there may be no place for them in the business plan, but it still seems wrong there's no place for them in the game except as counts-as. Oh well.

Wanted to say what a great job you've done with the GCA, it's really beautiful, the desert theme reminds and ramshackle nature reminds me of the rebel guys that fall under the sway of Spock's brother in the star trek film The Final Frontier (5th movie I think). It's not only original to recreate an orphaned army, but that your cult looks very different from the original cult armies is also great.

Your choice of counts as though, that is kinda odd to me for one reason, the purestrains. Do you field heavies in the blood axe kommandos? It would just feel abit 'weird' to be using ranged weapons from them.

Otherwise top marks, this is really a refreshing and beautiful army.

every thing looks great! just a quick question:
did you intend the acolytes to look like dungeons and dragons mind flayers?

The Purestrains didn't have any rokkits. I did have a couple burnas in them, which I repped with the Acid Maw Genestealer heads (the idea being they either spray victims with acid or use it when they bite). In Phase 2, I'm thinking about adding some dripping "acid" from their jaws to make them prominent. The one "counts-as" catch in the army is the sluggas on the Kommandos. In my list I just called them spinebanks. I'll probably model them up better in Phase 2 also. Not that I really fire the sluggas much anyway.

The Acolytes/Nobs weren't intended to look like mind flayers, but I realized it soon after I started working on them. So I shrugged and went with it. It's probably better to ask GW why their tendril heads look so much like mind flayer heads.

yeah,
This is a amazing army!
I love the detail, and i can see you spent a long time painting it.

But I'm not convinced that the ork codex was chosen for a counts as purly on fit...
With the bulk of the army made of hybrids, I think that you should have based the army on a human stat line and used some sort of guard army list with or without daemon/witch hunter allies....

Panic....

Remember the timeline here. When I first considered Orks for counts-as, the *old* Ork codex was in play.

A few thoughts:

1) Here's the Genestealer Hybrid Neophyte statline in the 2nd edition Tyranid codex:

M4 WS4 BS2 S4 T3 W1 I5 A1 Ld8

If someone else wants to do a GCult based mainly on ranks and ranks of Brood Brothers, IG should be a great fit. IMO, Hybrids are more than human and should have a non-human statline. And this army is Hybrid-based.

2) Ranks of stationary shooters is not how I envision a GCult to operate. I personally imagine mobs of marching militia, light fast vehicles, commandeered heavy vehicles and plenty of close combat troops. IMO, Orks (and LatD) have a much better feel.

3) If you want to fund the cost of the few dozen additional Hybrids I'd need to field them as IG, I'll consider it. Remember...they're getting as much as $10 apiece on eBay.

4) I'm not about to put that kind of time into a count-as based on the Inquisition books after what happened to LatD. That particular shoe's going to be next to drop< IMO. So no thank you.

5) IG generally aren't interesting to me and were never a real consideration.

yeah,
It is a hard army to find a perfect counts as... it's a shame you lost legal access to LatD.
I'm also in awe of anyone who spends their time making a army that doesn't have a legal codex.

the future of the hunters?
I think the deamon/witch hunters will get a combined codex. it's the only current main codex that has a focus on allied codexs and while this something that GW seems to be cutting down on, allies is what these codex are kinda about... how the imperial departments/forces interact.

But I'm not sure on the time scale for the new codex, but both curent hunter codex refer to the old SM and current (soon to be old) Guard codex, So I guess they are next in line? if there is no allies in the new codex, Maybe they will list the SM/Guard units you can borrow directly inside the hunter codex...

...and All armies need tweaking when their new codex lands...

Panic...

This is great stuff. The first issue of White Dwarf I ever bought had the cult army list.

How did you make the broodlord?

"Well, isn't the enemy of your enemy, like, your friend? Or whatever? Can't they team up?"
"Not exactly. In this setting, the enemy of your enemy is still a floating, greasy, armored brain."
"Well, what about his enemy? Maybe you could be friends with him."
"No, because that guy is a mechanical horror in an undying battle shell. He sails from world to world in a flying tomb, serving gods who eat hope."
