You know how 5th edition starter set contains orks and space marines. Well just wondering what the 3rd edition starter set had? Also if you know what 1st and second edition came with too that would be kool.

3E was SM and DE, 2E was SM and Orks. I have no idea if there was a RT starter set.

Heh, keep waiting.

Also, t'weren't no starter set for 1st edition. You could buy the book and random miniatures by themselves.

SM are a good starter army, easy to paint, possably the most vercitile troop for a base, and there the most sought after, and orks were gettin an update so why not?

No RT starter set. They released the rules well before there were any minis (here in the states that is). There was the Space Maring and Space Orcs sets...and then IG and Squats as far as sets.

6th ed. Should be chaos and eldar IMO. That would make the most badass set ever, and it would force GW to come out with plastic aspect warriors

I like having space marines in the starter. Nearly everybody has a space marine army, or a good gaming buddy with one, so at least half of every starter is usable by nearly everybody. The other half gives an army some sort of cool new plastics, and encourages building that army.

If they ran two random armies, the box wouldn't be useful to most players.

I'd rather see Guard vs all-new Dark Eldar.

It'd just be more plastic Dire Avengers.

Since no one has given the complete answer:

10 Space Marines (with sprue to make a Sergeant, Missile Launcher and Flamer)
Land Speeder (with Multi-Melta and Heavy Bolter options)

20 Dark Eldar Warriors (with 4 heavy weapons of some sort)

Neither was a particularly playable force and they were wildly unbalanced as well. The Dark Eldar were included to shriek loudly and die while the Space Marines demonstrated their manliness.

Also worth noting that the Marines were the standard type (as opposed to the clip together) as was the Land Speeder in the starter box. The Land Speeder was one of the harder models to assemble because of lots of small parts, plus the hull was warped and had to be held together by plastic bands while the plastic glue set.

The 5th ed. boxed set comes out miles ahead in terms of containing a playable force and being newbie-friendly.

they did release bundle packs that included an RT book and either an sm boxed set or space ork boxed set. Could that be counted as a starter set?

Since no one has given the complete answer:

Actually, the complete answer should also mention the content of the 2nd Ed box set:

20 Space Marines (with 2 sergeants, 2 flamers and 2 missile launchers)
20 Goff Orks (with bolt pistol + axe)
40 Gretchen (with autoguns)
1 Ork Dreadnought

It was a much better starter set than the 3rd Ed. box, since the included forces (plus the ample included terrain) could let you run some pretty interesting scenarios on your table top. The only catch is that the models were all basically mono-pose, and thus quite boring. Oh, and the Dreadnought was a 2D cardboard cutout.

Yeah the Ork Dread was a flat piece of cardboard with a picture of a dread on it that you slipped into a base. Sort of like the doors in Space Hulk. The ruins were nice though.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

We didn't think about it much at the time, but the friend I pitched in for the 2nd ed box set with didn't ever play with the cardboard dreadnought, because we thought it was really lame. There was a reason the space marines won a lot...

Did anyone else snicker when they saw that pic? I'm not sure if it's the memories of the card-dread, or the fact that the player was using TWO of them... It also could have been the fact that it was a space marine rhino among the rocks vs 2 ork dreads, yet there are plastic genestealers on the sideboard. I remember when I first got into the hobby, I think I had models from EVERY race kickin' around. Ah, memories...

Funny thing happend a week ago...a good friend of mine gives me the 3rd edition starter box and asks me to build it for him (apparently he doesn't have a hobby knife up here to build things). The Land Speeder was a pain, since I had never built one, had to look at the bottom of the box for ages trying to figure out how to put it together (not to mention making it fit). Does anyone know how to assemble the DE? I have no clue and have been avoiding putting them together.

I concur with the idea of SM being a standard army in the starter boxes simply because of how popular they are. Besides who doesn't like "free" terminators and a good chunck of "free" orks....5th ed is by far the best starter box out there, dare I say army box for the value? (unless you don't play SM or Orks...)

I recal the 3rd ed starter box with alot of fondness, not because it was great..which clearly it was'nt,but because it was were I got my the start of my first real 40k army,a buddy of mine had picked the box up and gave me the DE because he did'nt much have any interest in them..ahhh the old days.
anyway, the Dark Eldar frames should contain various heads, torsos legs wepons, spikey bits...the unhelmed head with the "topknot" is a syberite,a Dark Eldar sqaud leader,he can be armed with a splinter rifle (the rifle on the frame or pistol and ccw) everything else is basic warriors,if memory serves me correct and can be assembeled anyway you like, with the exception of the splinter cannons ( the largest guns on the frame) as I recal you can only have 4 in a sqaud, but I may be mistaken.

Actually a more complete answer is that the original rules included a few pages that were ment to be pulled out. They included a couple of summary sheets, and a sheet of Ork and Marine paper cut outs. Orks were 16 Boyz, 3 squad leaders, 2 nobz/characters. The Marines included 11 Grunts, 3 sergeants, 1 captain, and one missile launcher dude. They were all designed to work with a very basic scenario that was also on the pull out sheets.

It doesn't sound like much, but when it was released nobody had really heard or seen much about a game using real models, so it was about on par with the Battletech box, which had a expansion with just record sheets, and cardboard models, Car Wars, and Ogre/GEV, which were the other big beer and pretzels style wargames.

The idea was pretty similar to what we have with 5th edition, ie two sides, some models, and a basic scenario. But my how the expectations have changed, and the bar has been raised.

The age of man is over; the time of the Ork has come.

Why indeed. I think with the timing and new Ork models, it was a perfect transition. Space marinezz hurrr vs orks is a perfect thing. besides 2nd edition was released about 20 years ago, so it's not like it was a recent back to back orks vs SM release.

Don't hold your breath on the no SM starter set. that's like getting a knife set for christmas with no knifes.

A new day, a new time zone.

When space marines make up about 50% of your total sales, it can never hurt to encourage more marine purchases.

What were the contents of the 4th Ed Battle for Macragge box? I think it'd be amusing to figure out how many points of SM came with 2nd-5th edition (using 5th edition Codex point values)

The 4th edition box was only like 10 marines if I remember correctly, and 10 termagants and 6 genestealers. And a crashed shuttle and pilot!

"No! Hang on brother!!" Altharius could feel the warmth slip away from his dear sibling's hands

Tethesis's reached out his bloodied arm to Altharius's face.
"I..I have one final request"
Altharius leaned close to listen, tears welling in his once bright eyes.
"make sure th..they put my soulstone in a tank... it'll be... real fethin' cool"
"Yes, you're gonna be the most fethin' cool tank!!" burning hot tears streaked down Altharius's face, as he held his brother's soul in his grasp.

I never cut out the cardboard marines from my copy of Rogue Trader and I've still got most of my 2nd ed orks, gretchin, and marines - including the card dreadnought. I picked up the Dark Millenium expansion at the same time. The two boxes were my first credit card purchase, not quite maxing my feeble secured limit with my local banking institution. I loved the mini-campaign leaflet that came with the 2nd ed set, Battle for Armageddon, and must have played the scenarios a dozen times back in the day.

I skipped 40K through the 3rd and 4th editions and laid low until last year. Lo and behold, the next set I pick up is AoBR - more orks and marines. The purchase was mostly for my son, but he's since become interested in necrons and left the SM and orks for me. They'll be used to increase the rank and file of my 2nd ed marines and RT orks.

I've seen the terrain from the BFM set and thought it was okay, even if it did take away from the number of models you got with previous sets.

Admittedly, the starter sets are getting better for beginners.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
