Part 1 :-

Welcome to our 2nd battle report featuring the marine task force from the salamanders and ultrmarine chapters and the tyranids of hive fleet Nocturne on the planet of Thetis. After the big match up in the first report the story continues on like this.....

The second mission between myself and wannabe was at warhammer world the next day and we rolled for capture and control.

After the confrontation at landing site alpha both sides withdrew to consolidate gains, heal wounds and in the case of the marines, get the adept with the tyranid information off the planet safely and quickly so that the hard won data was secure before the nids could strike again. The greiviously wounded form of Tigurius was recovered in suspended animation and he is now in the cheif apoethary's medical wing aboard the ultramarine battle barge 'octavius' in high orbit. Marines from both chapters wait impatiently for news of their commander as the ground campaign progresses. In the meantime the salamanders captain Vulcanus assumes tempory command and directs his brothers to their next mission. A Tyranid brood nest, larger than any the scout teams had ever seen in their days as brothers of the chapter had been spotted far to the north of the planet, in the snow covered polar regions, and it was this large brood nest that was supplying the nids with alot of their gaunt broods and worriors, take it out, and a large bulk of the nid army would thin out without the constant supply of fresh reinforcements. However as the marines deployed and made ready to go for the objective, reports were recieved from units to the east that a large nid force was heading for the marines battlefield hq, even as the brothers themselves headed out for the brood nest. With hostile conacts blinking dangerously on the auspexes to the front and west aswell all the commander could do was order the squads to dig in and repell the tyranid monstrsities sprinting towards their start line and hq, the race was on.....................

standby for part 2 with battle in progress and photo's to accompany it coming in 30 minutes, my cooker has produced food so back in a mo!

Part 2 :-

Both sides squared off, but it was the marines that were quicker off the mark, the command squad and tactical squads setting off early in the dawn, the rest of the force arriving just after break of day on turn 1. A massive threat to the east was identified straight away and attempts were made to counter, whilst the dreadnought 'Kurt' and the Predator tank 'glory' held the centre supported by the scout squad. on the left the marines assault units made their dash up the flank, the bikes leading the way follwed by the land speeder and the assault squad themselves, led by the salamanders chaplain. Skirting a large wood a hive tyrant and gaunt brood were identified within, and a large proportion of the marine force let rip at this dangerous threat to no avail, the hive mind ( wannabe ) rolling well for cover and armour saves!

The nid reply was swift and brutal, the threat in the west becoming a critical reality very early on in the game, and a two fex tag team marching up the centre added to the salamander captains problems before the marine bid for the objective had really got underway. At this point his deployment mistakes became all to painfully aware to him, but alas he could only demand the best from his troops to carry the day. ( during this battle wannabe could only crew shake/stun my vehicles, no matter how many shots he threw at them, and we had a good laugh about it all through the game! )

by the end of turn two, beginning of turn three things had turned against the marine task force, the western flank and the units assigned to protect it and the hq objective had been exposed as way too inadequate, the vindicator being swamped by genestealers and raveners after only 1 round of shooting, and the nids after immobilising it and shaking the crew poured around it and thundered towards the tactical squad holding the hq. The lead fex roared a challenge and charged the marine captain and command squad, swiftly tearing the marine captain apart before he could even mount a challenge to the creature! ( note to self, a powerfist on the captain isnt a good idea bob! put it on the sargeant in future! ) the command squad fought bravely, but were pulled down and torn apart too when a brood of nid worriors charged them in the flank. In 1 round of combat the marine centre was looking dangerously thin and buckling under the pressure of the nid onslought.

However the chaplain took command of the force admirably and regardless of casualties pushed the force on towards the nid objective, spying the 2nd fex heading his way to intercept the assault squad and back up the nids holding the brood nest. Like true marines, the assault squad and chaplain changed course and slammed into the fex as it rounded the woods to confront them, a battle to the death was on! The other fex crashed through the rock outcrop in centre field and headed towards the marine objective, brother Kurt in its sights! Kurt in the meantime, even though by doing so he exposed his back to the raging creature, headed to the aid of his brothers at the objective, intent on holding up the charging hormagaunts from claiming the objective.

The genestealers and raveners slammed into the tactical squad holding the objective, and in a fury of talons, claws and blades the marines bowed to the pressure and fell back, the hq was lost!

however turns 4 and 5 saw a marine comeback, the scouts bravely squaring off against the nid worriors, gunning them down with the help of the Immovable predator in the centre, they then headed towards the hq to be in a position to contest it and deny the nids victory. The mauled tactical squad regrouped and charged back into the fray, determined to wrest their hq back from the nids now swarming over it, brother kurt also lent a hand in the swirling melee, charging the hormagaunts from behind and pulling them away from the objective they craved. On the left flank, the huge combat between the assault marines against the fex continued to trade blows, the fex pulling the assault marines down in a fury of talons over two turns, but the chaplain emerged victorious, slaying the mighty fex with a two handed swipe from his crozius! The bikes then sped past, charging the gaunt broods holding the brood nest, the nid objective was contested!

the final turn saw bloodshed and brutal close assault as the bikes cleared the gaunts holding the brood nest helped by the chaplain, but the landspeeder clipped the woods as it entered and crashed to the ground in a smoking heap, much to the amusement of wannabe! You can always count on bob to roll a 1, i think was quoted! and the marines just managing to contest the hq despite the attentions of the genestealers and raveners. the last fex on the board charged kurt who had held up the hormagaunts from taking the objective, and broke the venerable worrior apart after a flury of blows and counter blows from both sides! Desperate fire from the scout squad brought the stealers below half strength, and on both objectives the marines had held on, just, to force a draw out of the jaws of defeat!

After a desperate, hard fought and tense battle, a draw was a great conclusion, leaving things on Thetis still hanging in the balance! Im pleased it ended when it did, another turn would have spelt disaster for us, but a 2 was rolled and the game ended! Special mention goes to the devestator squad, who despite being armed with lascannons helped admirably in bringing down the larger nid creatures throughout the game, and to the nid broods, who did a wonderful job of contributing to some glorious close assaults!

Please find below some photo's of the battle, and wannabe please feel free to add the nid twist to the game, and any details I may have missed ( i am typing this after being up since 1am for work! )

thanks! bob

You mentioned the captain got battered by the fex before he can defend himself, is that just words because the captain strikes before the fex.

Unless said Captain was remaining true to his Salamander roots and carrying a Thunder Hammer.

Nice battle report!

The Captain had a power fist meaning he defaulted to initiative 1 and my Fex had +1 I. My fex was in base to base and so picked out the captain and walloped him before he had a chance to swing a punch.

Sadly, your Leman isn't mine, but if they stopped using standard engines and switched to Lucifer Pattern, they could move like they're mine. Look down, back up. Where are you? Your in a battlefield with the Rhino your Leman could move like. Whats in your hand, back at me, I have it, it's the fire control for the Twin-linked Assault Cannons aimed at you. Look again, it's a Deep-Striked Land-Raider. Anything is possible when your Tanks move like Blood Angels, and not like Guardsmen. I'm on a Baneblade.

Don't diverbob25 and mercer, in the picture the captain looks like he has a chainsword and thats the reason you put the army lists before the battle report.

Well, firstly we only thought of sharing our cool gaming experiences with you all shortly after we had played the games meaning we didnt record all the proper details for a full battle report to be typed up, secondly i havent got wannabe's army list and neither has he got mine, thridly he has a lil boy who is teething at the mo hence why he put the first one together in this format when he had a small amount of time ( bless the poor lil guy, teething is a bad time! ) so i followed suit and continued the storyline with battle number 2!

sorry if you dont like it sternguard_rock and i agree with you the photo does look as if he has a chainsword, but its on the arm of the apothecary, but the other 2 reports will be typed up in the same style, maybe if we can get our heads together well organise the armylists afterwards and see what people think of what we took for each battle!
