Gates of the Devourer
Summer of Reading: Day 2
Mighty Titans walk, and do battle with the monstrous alien bio-creatures of the tyranids, with the fate of a world at stake.
READ IT BECAUSE
We're used to seeing the Titan Legions supporting a larger Imperial army, but what do they do when they're alone, outnumbered, surrounded by xenos monstrosities?
eShort:£1.99 Add to Basket
THE STORY
No constructs of man are more terrifying than the God-machines of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Where these mighty mechanical behemoths walk, worlds tremble – few enemies can withstand the firepower of a Warlord Titan. The Imperial plan to save the world of Khania from a tyranid invasion looks sound: the Navy will destroy the hive ships, and the Legios will take a supporting role on the planet itself. But when the transports of the Adeptus Titanicus arrive, they find the Navy fleet has been annihilated, and they must take on the full brunt of the tyranid ground force, no matter the cost.

Deathwatch: Swordwind
Summer of Reading: Day 3
A warrior of the Deathwatch returns to his Chapter, but he bears a heavy burden that threatens his future.
READ IT BECAUSE
We've seen lots of tales of the Deathwatch, but not too much about what happens when a veteran returns to his Chapter with secrets he cannot reveal... it's a fascinating look at the aftermath of working for the Inquisition.
eShort:£1.99 Add to Basket
THE STORY
Oaths of brotherhood and loyalty are never lightly undertaken, but what happens when such oaths conflict with each other? Returning from a period of service in the Deathwatch, Battle-brother Odoni returns to his Chapter, the Mortifactors. With him he carries two sacred burdens, but is unable to explain to his peers how he came by them, as he must honour his oaths of secrecy to the Inquisition. And so is set in motion a tragic chain of events that can only be resolved by desperate conflict against an ancient and deadly foe.

Surely you are mistaken, no black library story is ever written as a slight variation on a small number of premises, you must be thinking of some other publisher.

Just got an email with a preview of the upcoming stories.
The Eisenhorn story is called the Keeler Image, which does ring a bell and sound awfully familiar.
John French has an Inquisition story set around the "Horusian Wars"
Rob Sanders has a story about Mars during the Heresy Automatically Appended Next Post: And gak, suddenly I remember.. the Keeler Image was supposed to go onto the audio drama CD collection.

Myriad
Summer of Reading: Day 5
A plucky band of Martian freedom fighters. A wandering robot carrying a secret that could end the Dark Mechanicum. Is the cost of using such power worth the reward?
READ IT BECAUSE
It's the sequel to Cybernetica and picks up a vital plot thread from that novella, asking a question that echoes through the Horus Heresy – is it right to use darkness to fight darkness?
THE STORY
Mars, the Red Planet, home to the Mechanicum, a mysterious cult dedicated to unlocking the secrets of the universe. In this sequel to Cybernetica, a loyalist resistance – made up of rag-tag survivors from Titan crew, enginseers and tech-adepts – conducts guerrilla raids on the Dark Mechanicum forces of Kelbor-Hal. Out in the wastes, they discover a Kastelan robot that carries inside it a rare secret: a technology that has the power to break the stalemate and swing the war in the loyalists’ favour. But what is the cost of deploying such a power? The loyalists now face a hard decision – just because they can, does this mean they should?

Deathwatch: The Last Guardian (MP3)
A Deathwatch audio drama
Dark Angels Brother Balthasar and a Deathwatch kill-team investigate a long-dead eldar craftworld infested with daemons…
LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE
It's a sinister and creepy audio tale with plenty of C Z Dunn's trademark dark humour and some interesting links to his other Dark Angels fiction.
THE STORY
As part of an elite Deathwatch kill team, Brother Balthasar of the Dark Angels joins a special Inquisitorial mission to the eldar craftworld of Kher-Ys. Long ago ravaged by the daemonic forces of Slaanesh, the craftworld may still harbour the unlikeliest of allies for the Space Marines, and the key to a greater victory for the Chapter.
Of course the latest HH novel is out in hardback format

As far as I'm concerned that tells you all you need to know about said "higher ups"; it's still the best book in the series IMO weirdness & all, and the first and last time I've read a BL author manage to depict the AL as anything more than moustache-twirling Saturday morning cartoon villains. If the people in charge think the more recent "*pulls off rubber mask* HAHA! It was I all along, tremble before meeeee!" pish was superior to Legion then I don't hold out much hope for the rest of the series.
Mind you, having seen them turn the Iron Hands into a punchline and punching bag for want of a writer to do them justice, I didn't have much of that left anyway.

I don't buy that rumor.
So many themes from Legion carried on into a large part of the following HH novels from different authors. If the "higher ups" were displeased with Legion, the Perpetual side story would not have continued. Instead even more Perpetuals were introduced, one being a fething Primarch. The Cabal would have got no more mentions. They get a few more mentions in other novels and are even still around in "present time", in some capacity, per a 40K Grey Knights short story, which incidentally is also focused on a Perpetual. The twin Primarch story was featured in numerous BL stories as well, but aside from flashbacks, probably none going forward, wink wink!
When you weigh the scales of "Legion" being a novel that displeased the higher ups against all of the themes/short stories that were introduced and expanded upon from that novel... It doesn't look good for the truthiness of that rumor.
Now if you are bothered by the style that the AL have been written, thats another thing, and speaks more to the particular author(s) writing style than a wholesale abandonment of what was introduced in Legion.
I'll get working on my review/summary of Praetorian of Dorn tomorrow morning. For what its worth, I felt like this was a sequel to Legion. John French gets Alpha Legion in my opinion. Its half and half Imperial Fists/Alpha Legion though, so keep that in mind.

Yeah I don't believe it either. I remember when Legion came out and there was an interview with Abnett in white dwarf where he said he went to them with his ideas for the twists in the book expecting them to say no, and they let him use them all and added their own. Surely the 'higher ups' know how the book goes before hand, and wouldn't release it if they weren't happy? I just think the AL have been overused since, and not used very well.
