WW - Thanks!

For the assault on the Cult of Skvorax, the Brimstone Inquisitor employed his usual extra muscle, the loose band of mercenaries who styled themselves as the Skeleton Crew.

Pict-captured here just prior to the assault are two of the detachment, Kruger the Point Man (see entry 646453) and 'Gunny' Highway, sporting his HEL (high-energy laser) cannon, and wearing tactical night-vision equipment. Highway is known to his team-mates as 'Gunny', having reached the lofty rank of Gunnery-Sergeant in the Imperial Guard 30-30 Infantry Regiment "The Dirty Thirty Thirty". Veteran of twenty years and over one hundred engagements, Gunny leads from the front, laying down his fire-power where it is most needed.

Pict-captured at the same time are the trio of Ordo Malleus agents: the Brimstone Inquisitor Hugues de Ardens, the heavy-weapons expert known only as the Prosecutor, and the Pathfinder Kroot named Blel Kadri.

(I realised after the last post I had not shown the Malleus trio on their new bases...)

Thanks for looking!

More sculpting on this Ordo Xenos femme:

And some more work on big chaos dude:

A bit of sanding and cleanup required on the brown stuff, but all in all, not bad for an evening's work.
Cheers!

Posted in Legion of Thorns, though technically the Wretched Sons are enemies for the Inquisitor retinues to battle, so here's the Helbrute painting WIPs anew, attempting to repeat the scheme previously created on Terry the Test Marine:

R-r-r-r-rusty...

to wretched (!) green:

Basket hilt sabre conversion for yet another character:

Bitz used:
- Vampire Counts winged Lord hilt and hand - fine cast version was terrible, the blade was bent and broken and the rest of him was full of holes and miscast bits
- Space Marine chainsword skull bit
- Blade from an Eldar Wraithblade Ghostsword

Inquisitor Kallatar belt work:

And pose testing:

- Obviously there's some coat sculpting to do
- The sheathed sword will connect either to the waist belt or an over-the-shoulder belt arrangement
- The gun is missing a barrel and any details

And WIP on the Wretched Sons marine:

Don't worry - he's 'armless...

Haha - just realised what you said - it's one sabre, just photographed from back and front - I haven't (yet!) been able to bring myself to spend $20+ on another Winged Vampire Lord just for his sword hilt!

- Yes, laboratory is right - this is the third attempt at the crackle layer, not including 2 previous tests

- And yes, I'm a cyclist and cycling fan, and after many months you are the first person to notice the Kroot is indeed named after the French cyclist - not because I particularly like him, just his cool name

Concerning Zamael:

Brother-Sergeant Zamael of the Sons of Horus was left for dead on the battlefield following the Great Betrayal on Isstvan III. In the midst of the battle he had fallen to a chain-sword wielding Loyalist, losing both legs, a part of his right arm and most of his internal organs. When he was found by the Wretched Sons he had been dragging himself with his remaining arm across the charred surface of the planet for a week.

The Wretched Sons were a small remnant of the Sons of Horus combined with a smattering of Death Guard, Emperor’s Children and World Eater survivors – all still loyal to Horus – who had been inadvertently left behind following the withdrawal of the Warmaster’s forces. Knowing no rescue was forthcoming, they had taken to wandering the scarred surface of the planet scavenging weapons and technology, in the process finding a surprising number of survivors.

Zamael was taken to the Dark Mechanicus Artificer Phledexus, whom the Wretched Sons had taken in and set to work repairing a cruiser in the hopes they might eventually escape the planet. Phledexus took the dying Zamael and entombed him in a battle-damaged but functional Dreadnaught sarcophagus to initially preserve his life, but the mutagenic side-effects of the toxic mix of chemical and biological weaponry deployed on Isstvan III was attacking Zamael’s transhuman genetics, changing him in unexpected ways. Excited by the prospects, Phledexus could not resist tampering with Zamael’s broken genes and implementing elements of the Obliterator virus into the Dread’s cyber-mechanics.

The Wretched Sons eventually repaired the crashed ship and left Isstvan in an attempt to join their Warmaster in the final assault on Terra and the False Emperor. Warp storms and other misfortunes delayed them and eventually the Wretched Sons learned of the fall of the Emperor, and the death of Horus, at which time they followed the surviving Heretic Astartes Legions into the Eye of Terror. By this time Zamael had grown beyond the confines of the Dread chassis, warping in screaming agony over years into a raging weapon of terror and destruction, and in the process becoming utterly and irrevocably insane.

So, the first pics were washed out and too bright, so I've played with the levels a little and now the colors are more true to life.

I've been very skeptical about using cracking medium especially the way you have, it was a bit eyebrow raising. However...

Seeing it finished, I really, really like it It's a very cool effect, that brings a lot of character and interest to the model.
Brilliant choice of colours, the rust is really ace, the touches of purple work very well and bring the model together some what.
voting for all of them

Desubot - It does look like He Who Shall Not Be Named a bit, now that you mention it... probably because I over-primed that section and filled in a lot of the tiny detail.

OneManNoodles - Thanks!
- I discovered during the long dark journey of testing and painting this three times that with crackle it's a paradox - MORE crackle paint means better crackles, but LESS coverage is better... the real trick is getting a nice amount of crackle without losing detail or making it look like mud.
- Painting rust and metals are favourites of mine, but my secret is that final Purple wash - I use it on all my models, sometimes more subtle than others - I even shaded the lower portions of the green armour plates with it, just to get some colour cohesion
- I avoided the purple wash on the skin for contrast, though there's purple in there from early purple pastel shading!

Thanks for looking!
