Can I just ask is there a thread on Dakka where people write reviews/synopsis of Black Library books?

Not dedicated to BL. Specific IPs subforums can have a review (like AoS or 40K). B&C is the only forum I know for a dedicated BL section. The First Expedition news section has a BL thread.

I don't buy that rumor.

Well, it is just a rumor, but it does come from a source I trust, so...

Anyway, all you have to do is look how the Legion has been handled since LEGION, and...
My dear Alpharius, do you not approve of these tactics, the staple of a true villain?

The Harrowing (eShort)

A Horus Heresy short story

Death has come to Callistra Mundi. The Space Marines of the Traitor Legions are coming, but when it's the Alpha Legion, you never know in what way they might appear... or who might be working for them.

READ IT BECAUSE
The Alpha Legion assault a garrison world in their own inimitable style, turning friend against friend until no one knows who is responsible... Jump in and see if you can figure out the mystery behind the Harrowing.

THE STORY
The garrison world of Callistra Mundi is threatened by traitor forces – none other than the insidious Alpha Legion. Like so many before it, this attack will not come as a traditional legionary assault, but as a Harrowing. Operatives and turncoats are revealed within the Mechanicum ark freighter Omnissiax and her attendant battlegroup, and confusion will reign amongst the loyalist defenders. And only when none can tell friend from foe will the true destruction begin...

Written by Rob Sanders

This story also appears in the anthology 'War Without End'.

I'm thinking about picking up the first three novels of the Beast Arises series, to add some diversity to my three week vacation's reading schedule.

I picked the first one up yesterday, but I'm still reading Praetorian of Dorn so I haven't started it yet.

It's a great series and a change of subject matter as the politics of Terra play a major role. Enjoy!

We'll find out soon enough eh.

I really want to like it, and I've been told it gets good, but I can't break through the tedious bolterporn section at the beginning of the first novel, every time I try I have to crack open Eisenhorn or similar to wash my brain out.

I didn't find the bolterporn particularly grating.
It generally doesn't go on too long between getting interspersed with the more interesting palace-intrigues on terra.

So, have any Imperial Guard novels been released in the recent past? Bolter Porn is fun and all, but hearing about how totally awesome Space Marines are gets boring after a while. I need some good foot slogger action.

Also, how are the 40k Mechanicus novels? I've been very tempted to grab myself a copy of Skitariius and the others.

I think aside from Gaunt's Ghosts and the odd quick-read there is no more Imperial Guard, because they're not space marines, right?

The most recent Guard related stuff was the "Legends of the Dark Millenium: Astra Militarum" book, which is a collection of short stories.

It contains the following short stories:
"Chains of Golgotha"
"Evil Eye"
"Sarcophagus"
All three of those are Yarrick focused and by David Annandale. I didn't really enjoy these ones as I despise Yarrick.

"Straken: A Hero's Death" by Toby Frost. It's Straken and his men on Armageddon. Not a bad short story, even if I am not a huge fan of Straken.

"Bloodlord" by Braden Campbell. It's about Cadians and Black Templars fighting a Khornate cult uprising. I enjoyed this one, but not as much as the last three short stories...

"Last Step Backwards"
"Lost Hope"
"The Battle of Tyrok Fields"
All three of these are by Justin D Hill and describe Creed's ascension to lead Cadia during the 13th Black Crusade. "Last Step Backwards" also actually has a scenario tied to it that you can nab from Black Library(and it's a fun scenario to boot; a Leman Russ and a platoon of Whiteshields have to hold the line).

It's a hardcover book that's $24. I hadn't read or listened to any of the short stories(I think some were audio dramas but I don't know for sure), but I do feel like it was $24 well spent. There's also an interesting tidbit revealed about a certain hooded remnant of the Heresy which I particularly enjoyed.

I enjoyed Skitarrius and Tech Priest, they are in audio book (I listened to while assembling admech) and a few other shorts ebundle package. Also the Graham MacNeill Mars trilogy is excellent imo.

I think only recent IG releases have been the Cain novels. The Imperial Guard omnibus is a great selection if you haven't already seen that.

The Mechanicus stuff was surprisingly decent considering it came from BL's unfortunate period of cheap tie-in books. It's a bit too obvious when you're reading them that the authors were instructed to frequently name and describe the models and to make sure they each did something AWESUM! *guitar solo*, but if you're a fan of the faction as I am they did a decent enough job that you can overlook that sort of thing.

None of which applies to the Of Mars trilogy of course, which is just flat-out good and well worth getting.

One of these days BL will learn how to be a real company again and stop with this limited edition bull gak.

I do have to wonder though, after his grand showing in HTH combat losing to a Tau commander, will now-Chapter Master Shrike be able to take on something that actually wants to fight in HTH?

Everything from the BL sounds like a game of GrimDark madlibs. It's a shame because some of their stuff is pleasingly mediocre, but it's just painful on the eyes to even read the sales gak.

That sounds a bit shonky, no? Reactivating someone's subscription with only an email notification? Considering how often I forget to check my spam signup emails I'd be raging if a company just decided to start charging me again and I ended up with overdraft penalties or short on food money because they thought a quick email was adequate.

Yeah, I did wonder a wee bit -- as you say situation might well've changed in the meantime.

Hope/assume all went well for people.

I liked the mechanicus novels they were something different. Probably not in my top 100 books but I did enjoy them. Although the priests of Mars series was a more enjoyable mech read.

On a different vein, today I recieved my gallery pic of the cover of throne world, the one with the eldar on the front. I completely love it, it's awesome. It's way more detailed than the picture they show on the cover and on the web site. Awesone, I think I will go look at it again!

Received the email last night, found it odd that they said they were going to send new copies of issues 1 to 3, I suppose it’s due to the change in spine image.

They have increased the number of books from 70 to 80, no idea where I can store that many books.

40 notes I would guess. Unless GW have taken a look at the last one in the series which has hardly sold at all and reduced the price??? But that's unlikely!

I have the last Raven guard limited ed book by George Mann. I loved it, it is as half novel and half graphic novel and was a really really pretty book to boot. Not really keen on this one though.
