Cheers, guys!

@ King Pariah: Haha, fair enough -- it should be "The Sound of Bloodshed", though: Can you imagine that? It would be one hell of a musical number

@ corpuschain: Basically, yes. The paintjob is entirely based on Vallejo's Halcòn Milenario Turquoise: First I mix it with a small drop of black and use the resulting colour to paint the entire blade. Then the edges get picked out with the original colour, then more and more white is mixed in to add a slight gradient towards the tip. And that's it, really.

So here's another update on Skulltaker: I added another round of highlights and tidied up the last rough edges. Most of the changes probably won't be all that visible to you, but they do make a difference up close. So I am basically calling the model itself finished now:

This is actually my first Khornate daemon - or even my first daemon, period - and I daresay it's a pretty convincing premiere, all things considered. One thing I am really happy with is the skin, and I need to give credit where credit is due: I painted this part of the model faithfully following the first part of Duncan Rhodes' two-part video series on how to paint a Bloodthirster. It's a really effective recipe, and it worked just as well here - using somewhat smaller brushes, admittedly

So with the model itself now finished, I am currently working on a suitable base for it. Some experimentation is involved. Stay tuned for more

Until then, as always, let me know what you think!

But it does work well as a spot colour with the blade and the small part on the trophy rack

Looks really good imo! Might have to check that painting tute out for myself

Very nice work onto he skulltaker! That post is incredibly dynamic (something I see in a lot of your minis!) and the armor doesn't looks like it's impeding him which is always a concern when you start a morning guys up.

Skulltaker is looking great, aren't you gonna.base him as part of your ETL vow?

Great to see some mentions of the ETL (even if you are fighting for the warp slime). I've currently working on 3k of BA for my ETL vow.

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

Brother Payne is exactly right about the blue, by the way: It serves both as a contrast and as a visual link to my World Eaters. Oh, and yes, the model definitely still needed a base, so that's what I worked on earlier today.

So here's my first completed model for this year's ETL, base and all: Calvarax the Exalted, my counts as Skulltaker:

Under normal circumstances, I am not a big fan of skull bases, but it did feel appropriate to use on, just this once

I am really very happy with the model, to be honest! It

may not look like it, but I really moved beyond my comfort zone with this piece, especially when it comes to the recipe for the skin! And while the red used on the model are quite different from my World Eaters, I think there are enough touches (the brass, the turquoise, the general look of the bases) to link this model to my army:

Nice. The extra height from the base makes him that little bit more imposing and I think adds to the model's dynamicness too (that's totally not a word but I have no idea what the noun for dynamic is haha).

What's next on the cards? Look forward to whatever it is as always !

Thanks, mate! To be honest, I initially wasn't really sold on the extra height while building the base, but I do think it has really managed to enhance the model for the reasons you mention -- btw, I think "dynamism" may be the work you were looking for -- don't ask me, though, as I am not a native speaker

Next up will be the rest of my first ETL vow, so it's either the 4th assault company's apothecary or a counts as Contemptor converted from a Kastelan robot:

More news on this as it develops...

Just as planned, I am currently working on the second model for my ETL vow: Apothecary Dumah, Chooser of the Slain, Primus Medicae of the World Eaters' 4th assault company (and also a stand-in for Fabius Bile, should the need arise). This is what he looked like before I started painting him:

And this is what he looks like now, mostly finished:

Unfortunately, the lighting in the pictures eats up quite a few of the subtler red higlights, making the armour look flatter than it actually is -- you'll just have to give me the benefit of the doubt here

Another effect that I am fairly happy with does show up in the pictures, though: I tried to suggest the impression of liquid sloshing around in those vials on Dumah's belt and inside the huge syringe on his narthecium gauntlet:

Ay! I must say I really like the way his skin tone has come out. It might just be that his face is positioned next to black rather than the usual red, but the grey tones seem more accentuated on this guy - I like it

You're right about the red not showing up too well but I'll take you're word for it and those vials came out brilliantly!

Thanks a lot, mate!

So daylight was already on its way out by the time I took the following pictures, but I was just so happy to have mostly finished my next ETL model that I simply couldn't wait. So here's the model, finished except maybe for a tiny touchup here and there:

Apothecary Dumah, Chooser of the Slain, Primus Medica of the World Eaters‘ 4th assault company

The presence of Lord Dumah could be one of the most important reasons for the ability of the 4th to still function as a fairly coherent fighting force, for it is due to his art that the company still has access to a way of replenishing its ranks instead of being left to slowly bleed out over the millennia: Apothecaries are a rare enough breed in the traitor legions, and especially so among the World Eaters, whose Apothecaries have succumbed to the bite of the nails for the most part, abandoning their former battlefield role in favour of bloodshed and insanity.

During the times of the Great Crusade, Dumah served directly under First Apothecary Fabrikus, and he was among those tasked with duplicating the archaic and little-understood neural implants Angron had been outfitted with on Nuceria. While working on the task of implanting an ever increasing part of the legion with those “Butcher’s Nails”, Dumah became aware of their debilitating nature and began in-depth research into the possibility of mitigating the negative effects of the implants.
Yet there was little tolerance for this kind of experimentation within the legion, as the Red Angel himself regarded any attempt at tempering with the function of the nails as a way of compromising their effectiveness and purity. So this line of research was quickly abandoned by all but a few Apothecaries, while the legion fell deeper and deeper into madness and bloodlust.

Ten millennia later, Dumah still serves as the 4th assault company’s Primus Medicae and has earned the epithet “Chooser of the Slain”, as his task is twofold: As a dark, Grim Reaper-like figure, he moves among the fallen and chooses which geneseed to harvest from fallen World Eaters and which to leave to rot, because it is too twisted and curdled by corruption to be safely used for implantation any longer. And he looks for those fallen enemies whose prowess in battle and martial honour have made them eligible for being inducted into the XII legion – either by being granted the kiss of the nails or, in very rare cases, a full conversion to an Astartes in the first place.

When off the battlefield, Dumah still continues his experiments with the aim of countering the nails’ degrading effects, and he feels that he is coming closer to a possible breakthrough with every generation of new implants and with every harvested progenoid. The only question is if there will still be enough of the company left to profit from his eventual success…

As always, let me know what you think!

Love the back story! Think it fits perfectly into the Eternal Hunt's fluff. I like the idea that he not only brings new Astartes into the folds of the 4th company, but gives non-astartes warriors the Butcher's Nail; gives you room for including all kinds of warriors into you army from an infinitely wide range of backgrounds.

I must say I chuckled when I read he's known as the Chooser of the Slain, as all I could think of was him being lined up next to a bunch of Space Wolf Rune Priests' pet birds (that go by the same name) and the PDF officer asking the civilian "Now which Chooser of the Slain was it that you saw tearing your homeworld to shreds?"

Excellent work as always!

Cheers for the positive feedback, guys!

@ Brother Payne: Well I'll be... that's the second time GW's authors have used the same idea as me then (first the Huntmasters and now this). Oh well...

So another short update regarding Apothecary Dumah: One thing that I need to mention is that Dumah actually uses a colour recipe that's fairly different from the rest of my army: Ever since my last reserves of Blood Red have run out, I was faced with the task of coming up with a new recipe, and I think I have finally suceeded with this latest model. The downside, if you want to call it that, is that the new look does differ from the old one to some degree:

The Terminator Lord in the middle uses my original recipe, based on the now OOP Blood Red. The Lheorvine Ukris conversion on the right uses a somewhat more experimental version of the recipe I used for the Apothecary: It's slightly closer to the original colour than the red on Dumah, admittedly, but it's slightly more messy and less elegant as well, so I think I may ultimately be sticking to the new recipe, after all. The difference in reds is something I think I can learn to live with

On a related note, having finished Dumah means that I've already completed two of the three models that form my first ETL vow:

So that's two down, one to go

Side by side you really can tell the difference in reds but I actually really like the vibrancy of the new recipe. It seems a little less orange too which again I like; I think we see to many "orangy" reds in the hobby. (Then again that may all just be the lighting ). What colour did you end up using as a substitute? I too am running low on my Blood Red

Thanks, mate!

Yeah, I kinda like the vibrancy of the new red myself, although adding some measure of depth to the red remains a challenge -- maybe even moreso than before

Anyway, the recupe for te red parts of the armour looks like this:

- Chaos black undercoat
- basecoat with Khorne Red
- wash with Army Painter Strong Tone
- add a layer of Mephiston Red
- add some highlights with a 50:50 mix of Mephiston Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet
- glaze with Bloodletter
- selectively apply some Druchii Violet into the recesses
- add some final highlights with almost pure Evil Sunz Scarlet

And it's a nice enough recipe, really. It just results in a look that's different from my earlier models, as you can see above.

Thanks a lot, guys!

I have a little "bonus model" for you, so to speak: Back when GW released the Mephiston Red spray, I got a can of it straight away, because I thought it might become a very valuable tool for painting my World Eaters and my Chaos Knight. Unfortunately, the stuff performed rather terribly, and I ended up with a test model that was a slog to paint:

Everything still looked pretty nice until after spraying, with a nice red undercoat across the whole model. But when I began to pick out the details in different colours, I realised that the undercoat had a somewhat strange texture that made the colours on top behave strangely, turning the whole painting progress into an exercise in frustration:

Now this is about as far as I got with the model:

But when the colour actually started rubbing off in places, revealing the bright red undercoat, I basically abandoned the whole project as a failure -- and the half-finished model kept sitting on a sideboard, daring me to finish it at some point.

Well, with the recent success of finally having painted Apothecary Dumah, I thought "What the heck?" and gave the model another try: I repainted the armour with the new red recipe and persevered, because I really rather like this particular conversion and didn't want to abandon it completely, and here's what I ended up with:

Now this is hardly my best work - and it couldn't possibly be, what with the damage left by the original undercoat - but this guy is at least presentable enough now to take his place amongst the rank and file, and I am pretty happy that I've managed to finish the paintjob, after all!

As always, let me know what you think!

Haha, yeah, not gonna happen here in Germany, mate The best I've come up with so far is a brand of floor polish that seems to work well enough. But even then, it would have dissolved the GS work on the right hand in this instance, so stripping the colour of the model wasn't an option.

Plus there's also in fact that I am lazy enough as is, so the prospect of actually having to paint a model twice is not exactly a fun idea to me
