Ive never played tau before, only fought them.. but ive been listening to all the good (and bad) advice flying around & I thought id (try) and lend a hand by posting up what I think would actually make a competative tau list.

HQ:

Shas'el
+TL-Missle pod
+Positional relay
+Bonding knife
+HW-target lock = 93

Elites:

2x Crisis battlesuit
+Flamer
+TL-fusion gun = 98

2x Crisis battlesuit
+Flamer
+TL-fusion gun = 98

6x Stealthsuit team
+Team leader
+HW drone controller
+Marker droner
+Bonding knife = 220

Troops:

9x Fire warrior team
+Shas'ui team leader
+markerlight = 110

6x Fire warriors =60

10x Kroot Carnivore squad
+7x Kroot hound = 112

10x Kroot Carnivore squad
+7x Kroot hound = 112

Fast Attack:

8xPathfinder Team
+EMP grenades
+Devilfish transport
+Multi-tracker
+Disruption Pod
+Fleshette Discharger = 225

Heavy Support:

HammerHead Gunship
+Disruption pods
+Multi-tracker
+Gun drones
+Ion Cannon = 140

1x Broadside Battlesuit = 115
+ASS
+team leader
+HW drone controller
+2x Shield drone

1x Broadside Battlesuit = 115
+ASS
+Team leader
+HW drone controller
+2x Shield drone

= 1498

Okay - The stealth team would be more of a personal choice - but they put out a good amount of str 5 firepower & are hard to get rid of (Generally snip & replace with plasma & missile pod/fusion suits). The Shas'el commander chills with the 12man firewarrior squad (oo & now the squad can shoot at light vehicles!). He, along with the devilfish, brings in fusion suits if need be. Kroot outflank or scout as per.

I know people will naturally disagree with the Ion head but think of this - It moves 12", can fire everything (including the drones, see drone entry) and this is generally awesome. Its simply filling a different role to the Railhead.

Oh - EMP grenades, are they worth 24pts? I think so. You'll loose the ability of thier markerlights but within 12" they will outperform fusion guns on all but fast-moving vehicles; Another personal buy.

Have a read & enjoy.

Edit: Cant spell Competative it seems

Hi

First all, regarding your commander, I believe (sorry, codex not on had ATM) that it is illegal to buy the same weapon system Twice - you must either twin-link or buy another system.

Why are you excited about tossing the commander in with the fire warrior to be able to shoot light vehicles? Tau are about maximizing the effectiveness of all their shooting, not throwing away str 5 shots VS Armour when their are likely better targets available. At the very least, put a target lock on the commander, so that he can seperate out his fire, while allowing the fire warriors to also do something useful.

Also, regarding the ionhead, if I recall correctly, a fast vehicle that moves between 6"-12" may fire one main weapon and defensive weapons (<ST 4), therefore you can only fire one weapon system. (it is also possilbe your statement is just not clear, because at under 6" you are correct)

Your kroot units ought to be 2 models per unit stronger (say the 24 points worth of EMP) as it moves the unit to the next break point for moral tests (5 models, not 4)

The list is interesting in other areas, and I look forward to hearing about how you do.

Cheers,

He can move and fire the Main gun on the Ionhead because it's a skimmer. Skimmers, and move and fire their main weapon. Also I do agree, the misslepods on the HQ do need to be twin-linked or it's a no go.

Seeing that I play Tau though, I'll give ya some advice. Seeing that it's only 1500 points, I would invest more with the Hammerhead than the Broadside. The hammerhead's Sub munition shot is more than needed against infantry armies, so get atleast two of those, and throw some rail-guns on those badboys.

Good points.

The tau commander always had a TL-missile pod - I just didnt properly phrase it, fixed now. Very good point about the multi-tracker, missed that.

The multi-tracker allows a tau vehicle to fire as if it were a fast vehicle & the drones (otherwise burst cannons FTW) can fire aswell as any other weapon system (see the gun drone entry, under the vehicles heading).

Again, good point about the kroot & wound threshold. Im liking the EMP grenades because it gives the entire army more potential. Im sure I can skim a few points.

I personally think that the Broadsides are quite survivable. Its hard to direct that much AP2 stuff that way (I played against tau, im going with what I know) whilst trying to outgun thier armor. They can sit back from virtually all small-arms. Plus the Ionhead is cheaper.

Making the changes.
