3d rendering bothers me. I can't help thinking that traditional sculpting is going to be obsolete pretty soon. Heads look cool though

Still, those designs look pretty good. Cept for that weirdo one ... bottom pic, left head.
I dunno why, but it looks fugly.

3D rendering is a good thing. Sure, traditional sculpting has its charm, but it takes a lot longer.
I think the heads are really cool, but I personally prefer the Death Korps 'pipe' masks.

As much as I would normally grumble about computers taking over the world (especially CGI in films), can't help but say that some of the new stuff being produced is simply of a better quality than the old stuff.
As for these heads and indeed other heads, bodies, arms and other paraphernalia, what's the score with using them for GW events?

The second one from the left on the top row, I like.

With the galaxy as large as it is the odds of the average guardsmen seeing and fighting a marine or MEQ are relatively slim.
Unfortunately the guardsmen in your (and anyone else who plays IG's) army are the REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY LUCKY ones that fight marines ALL the time |

Except for the one, they all look pretty similar. I would be quite happy with any of those. The "other" one...I can't decide if I like it or not. There's something sort of cheesy or campy about it, but I can't figure out if it's good or bad.
It might look kind of cool as a helmet/mask to differentiate a different unit, like engineers or something.

The blastmask-type (bottom right) is nice and would be used for a special weapon dude in my squads (flamers for example).
Other than that I don't really care which head makes it in the final production, they are all quite nice.

BrianCox wrote:Sons and daughters of Helghan. This much I vow.
The history of these days will be written in blood. By crushing the armies of our enemy, by seizing the weapons they thought to turn against us, we are fighting for our very existence.
But if there are those who would deny us peace; refuse us our rightful place in the universe, then we will unleash such terrible vengeance that generations yet unborn will cry out in anguish!
The enemy may shatter our bodies, but they cannot break our spirit.
Even now they advance on our home world, to seize by force what they cannot claim by right. They cannot imagine what awaits them.
WE WILL SMITE THE INVADERS FROM OUR SKIES.
Though they sweep over our lands like the sands of winter; Never again will we bow before them; Never again endure their oppression; Never again endure their tyranny. We will strike without warning and without mercy; fighting as one hand, one heart, one soul. We will shatter their dreams and haunt their nightmares. Drenching our ancestors' graves with their blood.
And as our last breath tears at their lungs; as we rise again from the ruins of our cities ...
... they will know, Helghan belongs to the Helghast.

Traditional sculpting may never be obsolete. Even Pixar has a sculpter create their final incarnation of characters before they are digitized into a computer. I do both but I am better with the computer than with green stuff. I do reccomend the many tutorials online for sculpting because the tips can be used for computer sculpting as well. Someday I hope to own one of those desktop 3D printers so I can make my own titans without plasticard and spot on scale. It will be more expensive but SO much easier.
Oh yeah, I like the detial on the heads too.

That "special" helmet looks like it's for snow combat.

The best part of this news is that deciding which two head designs make it onto the sprue is pretty much the last step to finalizing the sprue contents.
Then it's off to the printer for a few prototypes to paint and use in displays, and then we can finally get our grubby little hands on them

IT's difficult to look at larger 3-D renders on a screen and see what will look good in 28mm plastic.
My guess is that masks without the trailing tube will be better- especially the 3rd of the larger ones, on the right (3rd from left on top row, among the smaller ones). Also, that blast mask just won't look good in real life because the eye slits will be too small, narrow and close to the brim of the helmet.
Perhaps such difference in detail and realism before plastic molding might be a drawback of 3-d rendering vs. traditional sculpting. Rapid prototyping with decent detail could negate the drawback, but that's a ways away, isn't it?
Regardless: I am so, so, SO happy that WGF is making these. I hope they make a bank doing what GW should have done years ago.

From what I understand, when designing a completely new model from the ground up, traditional sculpting is faster. The analogy I heard is that for comic books inking a drawing by hand is much faster for a skilled inker than tracing on the computer.
I think there will always be a place for traditional sculpting, but computer generated rendering is ideal for a number of applications.

Car industry designers still do a lot of work using clay and other physical models because the physicality of the medium helps them visualise the presence of the final body in a way which 3D modelling doesn't.
A lot of games artists like to use materials and paper drawings for similar reasons.
