Openoffice calc.

Free version of Excel.

Can handle most excel files (even the 'new' .xlsx files).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

The forge, by the digital foundry. Google it, because I am too lazy to get a link for you. You'll have to join the yahoo group to get access to any of the data lists though. It is only slightly faster than using excel or openoffice

I use Excel 2007. Lots of pretty templates. I'm tempted to renew my license and upgrade to the new Army Builder version that will tell you what models you need based on your list.

As others have said, I use my own excel form to calculate it. Took me a while and doesn't look as nice as a professional one, but ah well. lol

I'm quite knowledgable with complex excel formula's and writing VB code (its what excel macro's use). So if you want to do specific calculations or functions, like not allowing the form to add certain options when other options are taken then PM me. Bear in mind I only have the Marine, Ork and Tau codex.

lmao, Or

Step 1. goto WHSmiths
Step 2. buy a pad of lined paper
Step 3. buy a pen (if applicable)
Step 4. learn how to write properly and learn numerical skills by doing it all by hand

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

A friend of mine e-mailed me an excel template, which I've used to make all my army lists since.

Its easy to use, pretty self-explanatory....the only thing army builder has over it is that army builder auto-fills points for you instead of you doing it yourself. Personally, I'm glad to know point values off the top of my head; it helps me make a list on the fly when someone wants a quick game for a point value that I don't have a list for.

Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll e-mail it to you.

*EDIT* I did a google search for "Excel template Warhammer 40k list builder" and got this, which is probably the same thing:

I am in love with AB but if you can't afford it, Open Office Calc is cheap and as good as Microsoft Excel I think

The best thing about army builder is you know your opponents list is correct if he's using it.

I used it for about a year before switching to Excel. If you don't know your codex very well or you're new to the game, it can help you daydream and come up with interesting combinations. When the new IG codex came out, I couldn't wait for an upgrade and used Excel, which I think greatly help me to nail down the options and point values. I was using AB as a crutch of sort and don't really find it compelling anymore.

I use 3x4 note cards. Every unit has it's own cards and I have a space to place changes in wargear etc. However, I print off the notecards from an Excel Spreadsheet I've compiled.
