Cheers, mate!

The almighty rain has finally let up a bit, allowing me to take some slightly better photos of the counts as Contemptor, so here's another look at him:

I am still looking for a suitable name for this guy, by the way, so please feel free to let me hear your ideas! I'll be needing both the pattern designation for the machine as well as the name of this particular model, so I'd love to hear your suggestions! Please refrain from going Age of Sigmar levels of cheesy on me, though

Here's another photo of my first vinished vow:

That's a cool additional 500 points for Khorne's Eternal Hunt

But I also have something new to show you: It seems Khorne is indeed pleased with my recent completion, as I have been making some massive progress with that bestial Daemon Prince. Take a look at him:

Once again, Duncan Rhode's video series about how to paint the Bloodthirster has been an invaluable asset to me, as I've used the exact same recipe on the Daemon Prince's skin (just like on my Skulltaker earlier), and it has been a blast to paint the skin! The oily metal emerging from the arms and legs, though? Not so much -- I am sure happy to be finished with that part!

I've also given some extra care to the mouth area, due to the fact that this part will be much harder to reach once the ears/horns have been glued to the head:

As always, let me know what you think!

Brilliant stuff. "Confractura" would be my recommendation for the name for the robot it's Breach in Latin.

Cheers, mate! That is a very cool idea for a pattern name indeed! Thanks a bunch!

In the meantime, I have been pouring quite a bit of work into painting that Daemon Prince, and I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed painting that big lump of plastic! I do of course realise that the model is a bit of an acquired taste, as there is a misshapen, overmuscled look to the whole thing. Let me just clarify though that his was very much an intended effect: The idea for this model was to show how a World Eater, at the height of his madness and bloodlust, maybe wouldn't be transformed into a darkly angelic figure, but into a feral daemonic beast. The idea grew from the scene in Betrayer where Angron ascends to daemonhood (and you get the idea that he becomes an even bigger monster during the process) and a throwaway line from Codex Chaos Space Marines where it's stated that to become a Daemon Prince effectively means eternal servitude, and not even death offers an escape any longer. Hence the bestial look of the model.

Anyway, here he is: My converted Daemon Prince, dubbed the "Avatar of the Hunt" for now:

By far the trickiest question has been to figure out what to do with the armour plates: The bronze trim was a no-brainer, but I didn't want to go for predominantly black armour in order to avoid the Black Legion look. I also tried to paint them red (my old red recupe, even), but the result just lacked contrast when compared to the skin. And then I realised that all bronze armour plates might end up looking very Khornate: Now I have this image in the back of my head of the red parts of the armour turning into blood and running off during the Daemn Prince's ascension, or boiling away as the daemonic brass underneath becomes visible. And in any case, since this guy is basically a just for fun project, I might as well try some new stuff, right?

Like I said, I wanted some visual elements hinting at the Daemon Prince's Astartes roots, in spite of his animalistic look, hence the shoulder pads, the remains of the Astartes backpack on the shoulders and the sockets appearing on the Daemon Prince's body where he used to be connected to his power armour. As you can see, I painted the patterns etched into the shoulder pads with Tamiya Clear Red -- I didn't want to risk a silly looking OSL effect here, and the blood seemed like a nice fit

In fact, there are even more hints as to his origins, such as the Triumph Rope scar, a remnant of his life as a World Eater:

And the chains dangling from the Daemon's mane of hair are actually his Butcher's Nails implants, transfigured into the shackles they always were...

Speaking of the creature's head, here's a closer look at the face, an area I am especially happy with:

I believe the colours and recipes used on the Daemon Prince and Skulltaker conversions will facture rather heavily into any additional daemons that may be in the cards for my army -- for instance, after two successful test runs, you can expect the recipe for the skin to appear again on my Bloodthirster.

But anyway: For now, the finished model also marks the completion of my second ETL vow. Yay!

As always, let me know what you think!

I wasn't sure about this guy's composition at first but the paint job is excellent, and I think he's growing on me Running with the boiled blood idea, might be good to add a little blood here and there in the recesses of the brass? I think this would really add both to the fluff, and to create some more contrast on the armour.

It also hadn't really clicked as to how big this guy is until the comparison shot with Skulltaker there nice work!

Looks brilliant. I really dig the idea and how it shines through in the finished mini.

I think the armour plates would look good in black...perhaps many glazes of black over the recessed areas. At the moment there really isn't enough contrast.

Very nice stuff yet again. Did you think of painting the plates in the Heresy-era World Eaters colors of white and blue? Perhaps (if you haven't thought of that mini's background yet) he may have ascended shortly after the heresy, before he had changed his armor's color. Anyway, fantastic mini, looking forward to see what's next

Thanks for the positive feedback about the Daemon Prince, guys! I will admit that this has been a bit of an improvised project from the start, which makes it all the cooler now that you seem to like the model! As for the armour plates, I will say that using the Pre Heresy World Eaters colours never really seemed like an option to me, mostly because I'd like to keep a visual distinction between my 30k and 40k World Eaters. Adding some definition by adding a darker wash of black, brown or maybe even Smoky Ink to the recesses of the armour plates, on the other hand, definitely seems like an option worth looking at -- by and large, I have to admit I am pretty happy with the overall paintjob, but I agree that the armour plates might profit from slightly more depth.

In the meantime, however, I have already thrown myself headlong into the next project (and also the next ETL vow, as it were). Because, ultimately, both the Daemon Prince and the Skulltaker conversions, in addition to being fun models in their own right, were also test runs for this guy:

I have owned that Bloodthirster for quite a while now, and it is one of the models I really want to see finished. As you can see, I have already made some serious progress in just a few days. In fact, Duncan Rhodes' painting tutorial saved the day once again: It already worked really well on the two previous models, but it's just fantastic when used on the model it was actually intended for

I am actually even closer now to finishing the model, having started to paint the armour plates earlier today -- time to get dressed

I like it but, I would not use the rectangle base IMO. Since everything is going round or oval. The nub on the right hand ? Trying to figure out if you're painting that separately or have something planned ?

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

@ Sammoth: The finished model will of course be on an oval base. I just attached the Bloodthirster to that rectangle base so I have something to hold on to during the painting process.

@ Pekel: Mate, what can I say: Every once in a while, even I encounter a model that I think is pretty much perfect If this is any consolation to you, however, I do have another Bloodthirster sitting in a box, and that one is going to see some fairly major conversions. Don't hold your breath, though

@ WarbossDakka: Cheers, mate! My thoughts, exactly

So, work on the Bloodthirster continues, although progress no longer happens in leaps and bounds, but rather in smaller increments: The Bloodthirster is one of those models where you cover lots of ground early on and can then spend an eternity on all those intricate details. That being said, I think the main body is just about finished now:

Now there's a detail that I would really like to hear your thoughts on: My original plan was to use the full set of armour plates that come with the kit, i.e. a breastplate, the two upper-thigh plates, a set of vambraces, a skull-shaped shoulder pad and the two smaller tilting plates that attach to either side of the breastplate. But now that I have added the breastplate and thigh-armour, I find myself reluctant to cover up more of the red skin: I really like the look of the bare shoulders and the part where you can just glimpse the musculature of the daemon beneath the breastplate, and I am beginning to feel like adding more of the armour would actually diminish the coolness of the model -- I'd love to hear your thoughts on this matter!

Speaking from personal experience, the shoulder guards look pretty daft anyway. They stick out really far considering they're meant to be armour.

I'd leave 'em off, makes the model look so much better.

I love how crisp you got the skin to be, it's just right for daemon-skin.

I like the skin tone alone. I do however like the armor pieces as well. Maybe a way to put them on so you can take them off if you wanted to. Don't think that would be possible but, you can look into it. IMO If you just go plain skin you might want to do more highlights on the skins, veins, wing membrane, horns etc. It's not that your paint is bad I am just suggesting making it pop a little more if you don't add the armor plates. Something to break up the contrast a bit.

Oh wow he's HUUUGE!!

Loving the progress so far - the skin looks great and I like the armour plates black with gold/brass accents - think that works really well. Regarding the addition of armour plates I thinkhe looks a little bottom heavy atm. If I were you I think I'd be adding one shoulder guard (idk how many the kit comes with), preferable on the left shoulder, and the just leaving the vambraces off. I think that would help give more balance to the model.

As it is I think the skin worked out incredibly well, and look forward to seeing what you do with the rest of the model. ( And indeed the mystery right hand )

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

@ Sammoth: Maybe the latest pictures don't get this across all that well, but every part of the skin (every single vein, in fact) has been highlighted, and there is actually quite a bit of pop to the skin area -- that's the whole reason why I was considering leaving off the armour.

After much deliberation, I have decided against the shoulder pad: I mocked it up in place, and it ended up covering too much of the skin, just as I had suspected it might. This is basically a first for me, as I am a huge fan of extra detail and additional armour, but just this once, less indeed seems to be more. I might still add the vambraces at a later point, but for now I think we can call the model itself finished:

Let me just say that painting that whip was yet another exercise in patience, pretty much on par with the wings

So with the model now finished, that just leaves the base to be constructed and painted - a project that should keep me occupied until the weekend With a bit of luck, I'll be able to post the finished piece later this week!

Until then, as always, let me know what you think!

@ Jehan-reznor: "Little demon"??? You cheeky git!

I originally expected that Bloodthirster base to take me at least until the weekend, but then I couldn't leave he model alone, and so, after a frantic building session that lasted until late at night, here's the final update regarding the Bloodthirster. I give you...

Ghor'Lash'Kharganath, the Gorelord, the Ever-Wrathful, Chosen Hunter of Khorne

And here's a closer look at the finished base:

There were several elements I absolutely wanted to incorporate. First and foremost, a symbol of the Imperium's shattered power. I think the shield fills that role rather nicely

In a bit of an in-joke, the bease also features another helmet from the Golden Legion, my DIY Astartes Chapter created for INQ28:

And finally, I really liked the idea of the earth itself reacting to the daemon's malign presence where his ironshod hooves touched the ground -- hence the bloody bone spikes jutting from the rock. And in the middle of it all, the Bloodthirster is ascending from a pit of boiling blood on a pillar of fire:

And finally, another closeup of the axe:

Since Brother Payne asked, here's how I painted this part:

For the silver metallics:
- basecoat with GW Leadbelcher
- a heavy wash with a mix of Army Painter Dark Tone & Vallejo Smoky Ink
- another was with Army painter Dark Tone
- and finally, I carefully highlighted the blade using GW Mithril Silver

For the bronze metallics

- basecoat with Vallejo Tinny Tin
- wash with Army Painter Strong Tone
- drybrush with GW Dwarf Bronze

There, hope this helps!

So, anyway, I am not going to mince words here: I am incredibly happy with the finished model! From a purely technical standpoint, this is very probably my finest paintjob to date. Oh yeah, and this also means another thing: This also marks the completion of my third ETL vow -- Huzzah!
