The End Has Come..

July 21st 2009 -

Well folks, that time we’ve all been waiting for has come.

I received a letter from Games-Workshop today, saying more or less the same as our last legal letter:

So, on the 31st July this site will be closing down along with the download links to the modules.
Now, I DO NOT want a tonne of comments bad mouthing GW, they’re only doing what they have to to protect their IP, I understand that and don’t feel any anger towards them what so ever. So any comments like that WILL be deleted.

We had a good run, that’s for sure. As mentioned previously I was planning to retire towards the end of summer, I have little motivation to carry on and with University work it would be impossible for me to continue producing the artwork needed.

*raises bottle of milkshake*
It’s been great over the last year, I’ve met some great people and had some good games, so, for now, I bid you all farewell!

I’ll repeat, on 31st of July this site will be closed down, so download and donate while you still can

Don’t worry, I’ll still exist after we’ve closed down, I run my own model blog now, The Vanus Temple. (Link to the right). Would be grand if you all popped by every now and then to say hi!

Thanks to everyone who has helped out over the period of our existence and I hope you’ll all be playing 5.2b for a long time after we’ve gone.

Tim Davis

Essentially, they got hit by a C&D and the site is closing at the end of July, so if you want the modules (40k, BB and Epic), you'd best download them before then.

That's too bad. Another one of those instances where protecting their IP is tantamount to killing interest in their IP.

As they have no competing product, GW should be happy to have Vassal40k continue; just minus the terms and icons that reduce their stranglehold on their IP, right?

Man, just as I was starting to learn the interface too.

Oh well, will we be able to still use it in an offline atmosphere? It's a great tool for battle reports.

How unfortunate...

They could do offshore hosting - where GW couldn't touch em... haha.

Though nvm ;P

GW wants to protect themselves hehe.

Let's find someone to host this offshore, indeed.

TOTALLY not interfering with actual GW sales, and not doing anything untoward with their IP. Total BS. Boo hiss, GW.

The explanation given back when they closed down the online Space Hulk game was that a company currently owns the rights to create computer games based on 40K IP. They paid a lot of money for those rights, and people putting out computer games for free on the internet undermines that investment.

Make of that what you will.

Technically - all he has to shut down is access to vassal. Cease and Desist just requests him to stop releasing stuff that infringes - simply having a discussion forum is not infringing in any way.

He - can keep a forum still up.

Host the vassal module on hosting sites.

*chuckle*

Just like AB40k exists hehe.

Honestly, this was a long time coming.

If you really wanted to do a PC-based internet wargaming setup, you'd do it with generic shapes (circles and squares cannot be copyrighted), and provide a number of different mechanisms for play (different sided dice, rulers in cm and inches, coin flipper, etc). It would be up to the players to label their generic shapes in their game, and apply meaning to this generic virtual tabletop.

GW has every right in the world to shut down virtual 40k sites. They have no rights over virtual tabletops though, even if people are using them to play 40k...

Riiiiight. So... the person who has a PDF rulebook, a PDF codex, a copy of vassel and no models is not hurting GW sales? How exactly? With this and Rule+codex torrents a person can play as much as they want without ever sinking a dime into it or spending any time on the hobby aspect. It isnt exactly like playing but it gives a good feel.

That kind of stinks. Vassal is like an awesome demo mod... plus if for some reason you couldn't get to a place to play or you couldn't access your stuff you had another avenue.

Unfortunate that GW is one of the companies that doesn't support Vassal or other similar programs such as Cyberbox.

There are many board game companies out there that release Vassal modules for their games after release! Generally you will still need the rules to play the game of course, and to know how to properly set up the scenario/game.

This really sucks! we are good for now with the current state of the game, but once a new codex comes out, it will be pretty obsolete. yes I know we can sub stuff in, but still, this really sucks!

I don't think it's so much about what helps or hurts GW sales. It has more to do with their IP. If they do not actively defend their IP (even when it's a benign mis-use), they will lose the rights to defend it when it is a serious mis-use.

In this particular case, as I understand it, it's more that if they don't stomp on anyone producing video games based on 40K IP, they leave themselves open to a lawsuit from the people (THQ) who currently own the exclusive rights to make such games.

I think this is a good a place as any to show off another very similar game to Vassal 40K. It's called MegaMek.

What is MegaMek?

It's a complete translation of BattleTech on the computer, playable against bots and multiplayer across the interwebs. It uses images and IP from BTech and is completely unofficial and free.

Why am I talking about MegaMek?

Because they haven't been shut down by the owners of the BTech IP. In fact, they have their own subforum at the official-fething-site.

And there's the difference. One company supports its players, wants the best for them and works with them to create new playing opportunities.

The other is GW.

There is a bit of a difference between THQ and the creators of VASSAL. One Costs money, the other is completely free.
So, THQ cannot make a lawsuit against GW.

MegaMek makes me happy. (Are you one of the people I introduced to it?) It's like playing Battletech, with all of the annoying bits handled for me. Of course, Btech primarily sells rulebooks, rather than models - I've never bought a 'mech mini in my life.

But it would be very nice to have a licensed electronic tabletop; there are some Aussies I wouldn't mind throwing down with. Hell, Dakka Detachment One could actually play a *gasp* practice game!

I'd stop the advertising if I were you, H.B.M.C. MegaMek may be good, but I don't think they'd appreciate you rubbing their services in people's faces.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I don't mean to rub it in the faces of the Vassal guys - not at all - I feel nothing but sorrow for them being shafted by a company that has become such an expert at cutting off its own nose just to spite its face.

If anything it just proves that GW is a miniatures company first, gaming company second.

A lot of my favorite wargame companies really promote vassal and some of them even create their own vassal modules for their games, most notably GMT. But a lot of other outfits like Multi-Man Publishing, Compass Games, etc all support vassal.

At least in board based wargaming Vassal is almost the method of choice for playing.
