Hi all

Sorry if this has come up before but I'm having some real trouble finding tutorials with search. *prepares to be flamed*

I'm starting some mortifactors and I'd like a quick(ish) way of painting bone that looks good and doesn't involve drybrushing (because of the small areas such as the bottom half of the helmet)

Any help appreciated. (screenies would be great, too)

Cheers!

Bleach bone + devlan mud + some high lights would work i think

Sorry, I don't do quick!

I have found the following build up taken from a White Dwarf Article to be a great way of making bone:

  • Base Coat: Scorched Brown

  • 1st Highlight: Beastial Brown

  • Optional Intermediate: 50% Bestial Brown/50% Filthy Brown

  • 2nd Highlight: Filthy Brown

  • 3rd Highlight: Bleached Bone

  • Optional Intermediate: 50% Bleached Bone/50% Skull White

  • 4rth Highlight: Skull White (edges only)

  • Just took some WIP shots that gives a better break down of the technique. As you can see, one side has been built up to Filthy Brown while the other is at the Bleached Bone Stage

I do at least three steps:

    Scorched Brown basecoat
    Bleached Bone overcoat
    Skull White highlights

You can detail this of course, mixing intermediate steps of Scorched Brown and Bleached Bone or Bleached Bone and Skull White in between to layer it up.

The idea of a Devlan Mud or other wash to tie it all together would not hurt in any event.

    I do the following

    1. Basecoat with Snakebite Leather
    2. Shade with Devlan mud
    3. For first highlight mix 50:50 Snakebite and Bleached Bone
4.For second highlight use Bleached Bone
    5. And if you want a third highlight 50:50 Bleach Bone ad Skull White

Bleached Bone with skull white drybrushing and a wash.

Just use a small brush for the drybrushing.

I find that the following works out a nice bone colour, i used it on some chosen to make some nice bone colour robes.

Prime: White or black doesn't matter

Basecoat: Dheneb Stone ( nice even coat)

    Wash with gryphonne sepia.

Then highlight with bleach bone, leaving the darkened colours from the wash.

Then highlight again with a 50:50 mix of bleach bone to skull white.

Followed by a very final highlight of probably 80:20 mix of skull white to bleach bone.

the way i painted my bone for my Chaos chapter the 'Bone Quarter' was to start with Zandri Dust as a base, then put a highlight of Screaming Skull, wash with Seraphim Sepia then a final highlight of Screaming skull again

The most realistic effect I get on bone is from working up scorched brown to beastial brown to snakebite elather to bleached bone, followed by some tiny white highlights...be careful not to overload your brush as doing so will cause big flat colors which tends to look cartooney, use a minimal amount of the lighter paints to just barely cover what you want covered...you'll wind up with a very old and beaten down look to your bone

how do you do the white highlights? in random parts of say a skull or specific parts?

    I like to use

Base- Dheneb stone (Rakarth Flesh for the new range)
    wash- Devlan Mud (Agrax Earthshade)
    Layer- Ushabti bone
    2nd layer- Screaming Skull

you can do an extreme highlight with white if you are looking for higher quality and you can use the layers either by drybrush or just regular brushing.

I do my bone base coat with zandri dust then wash with seraphim sepia then drybrush with terminus stone then lightly drybrush with praxeti white.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."
