Well we've been hard at work on the feet so its time for another update!

Humble beginnings of a foot:

Blank toe, blank toe mold and foot (minus rear toe)

Rear toe attached:

View from above:

From behind:

And after a couple of hours of detailing:

I've got to say for the crappy oversized models forgeworld makes their photoetch and normal sized models are great!
I've put one of the medium eagle sprues through the works for this project and I've got 2/3 of the sprue left!

Please god don't paint them Blood Angels. Red is overused and wouldnt loot that good.
I always though the warp-runners had the coolest scheme.

Now thats a proper Titan scheme.

I found a PDF that lists titan color schemes but I'd like a place where I can see examples of the loyalist schemes.
Does anyone know of such a site or even book?

I have a book called Titan Legions Codex: Titanicus... I'm not sure if its from the original version of Epic, or if it predates epic, found it at a used bookstore. You might want to see if you can get your hands on a copy...

There are four main Titan Legions depicted in canon, though some may be equally large but more obscure.

Legio Astorum (Warp Runners). Mostof the heroic Princeps written up have been from this legion. Its also a frequently depicted colour scheme, which hasd changed slightly (for the better IMHO) with the new Forgeworld Reaver. Their principle duties involve guarding the Cadian Gate.

Legio Griffonicus (War Griffons). Frequently depicted but not too much is known about them except the colour scheme. though in more recent history they lost their forgeworld to the nids.

Legio Destructor (Steel Beasts). The largest known legion. Particularly well stocked in titans of all sizes. They like to try to 'out waargh' orks by mounting speaker systems on their titans, it usually works.

Legio Ignatus (Fire Wasps). By far the most prestigious legion. Defended the Imperial Palace during the Horus Heresy. For this the Fire Wasps are the only legion permitted on Holy Terra. The Legion has the honour of supporting the Adeptus Custodes, two warlord titans from the legion maintain permenant vigil over the Golden Throne.
The Fire Wasps still see action elsewhere (unlike the Adeptus Custodes) and were recently seen on Taros.

Others:

Legio Metallica (Iron Skulls). The titan legion responsible for guarding Armageddon, most of their exposure comes fro armageddon supplements. This legion was all but destroyed during the ork invasion.

Well the foot mold came out right:

Here's the resin with the master:

So now I know what you're wondering. Well you've got this pretty foot, what does it look like on the titan?
So here's the photos

Here's a photo with the nose:

Well we're two feet away from having the full sets, after that its on to the toes (of which we have a blank ready), and then shin armor.

Hell's bells. This thing is a few armour plates away from being ready to kick some serious ass. Why stop at four?

Agreed - once I had the casts, I'd have half a legion of these things :-)

It looks amazing so far.

AMAZINGLY COOL!! You have real talent to be able to do this. I have one question though, how much money have you saved by building a Titan yourself rather than buying one from Forgeworld?

I'd like to know this too. But I think the value of saying "I made these 4 Titans" is worth it even if it is more expensive overall than the ones from Forge World.

I've been following this since I started lurking on Dakka, and it is hands down the most incredible thing I've seen in the P&Ming sections.

I think at this point it's not even about saving money over buying forgeworld. After the casting equipment, silicones, resin, construction materials and man hours it probably won't work out as a savings unless several are churned out. A project of this magnitude is more a challenge in fabrication techniques, and design. I love it Foda, it's already been repeated time and time over, but excellent work.

Vandez - Thanks! I'm not going for a legion because a few of the molds are actually destroying themselves as we pull the 4th copy out.

The Phazer - Thanks!

extrenm(54) - All and all there has been about $450 - $500 out of pocket expense. That does not include the vacuume chamber, pressure pot, and other tools we already had.

Typeline - Thanks! You're right the main reason for building them was to make them better than forgeworld's titans. Its nice to have a $800 titan that's just like everyone elses but having my own that are posable, with lights, and sounds is totally different.

Teek - Thanks! Your right, it was also a great learning experience.

Looks good. Will the 'palm' part of the foot actually touch the ground or will all the weight be distributed amongst the toes? As a critique, I like the way it looks with a deeper stride because it makes the legs look more stable, and not too close together.

Foda, you mention that the molds are destroying themselves, but is there anything (other than the cost of silicon(e)) preventing you from just making new molds?

Silverthorne - Thanks! Actually it will be balanced on the toes, but I can be balanced anyway we choose. I took it to my FLGS on wednesday and played around with it and I could balance it on one foot with the other just resting on the front of the "toe" (well I guess its a socket).

TragicNut - Basically its the cost of the silicone. We keep all of the masters in a box. I'd love to keep pouring them forever since 1 "gallon" of resin is 1 gallon of part a and 1 gallon of part b.

VermGho5t - LOL! Thanks. They may not inflate but they will raise and lower when we get the toes on there.

Well its time for another update. We've spent most of the day making a toe master so I thought y'all would like to see pics.

Toe master, next to a toe resin blank.

And on the foot.

As some of you may know this toe is ALOT shorter than the ones in the cardboard plans but I think it looks alot better!

I've beens staring at these legs since you posted them, wondering what it is that's missing past the armor plating. Just realized what it was! Worky bits! Stuff like hydraulics and bunches o' cables. Any plans to add little detailing like that?

Captain Lillithian - Thanks! I'm going to be working on the leg armor this weekend.

N1NJ4 - LOL! Thanks, for the compliment and the visual I didn't need

DaMaGe - LOL! Thanks!

grey_death - There will be some but as the legs are posable it will be limited so we can move the legs easier.

Can't wait to see the leg armour and toes in place on one of these babies.

The painted group photo of all four may just make me want to sell my soul to satan to inherit your kind of skills.

ps I know that's a while off but I'm looking forward to it.

The works like it is going well. i have only one comment... I really don't like the length of the waist. It seems necesary considering the size of the gun arms but.... It just seems too long. It has a feeling of "standing" rather than "crouching." Does that make sense? Maybe I just nee dto see this with the leg armor on. That could visually weigh down the model a bit and give it more of its "crouching" feeling back.

Azmodai - Thanks!

Brother Bartious - Here you go!

Ender502 - LOL! It's ok you don't like the waist - I do! Maybe I forgot to mention it before, the waist has a height adjustment – Hi for big guns, low for regular guns. Also, one other thing has to be taken into account when looking at this waist – IT WORKS! It is both functional and load-bearing. Art doesn't always follow functionality rules, especially with GW. The door on the back opens to get at all the adjustments which aren’t there in the other versions.

Grey Death - Worky bits aren’t done until after the main scratchbuilding is completed. Only the details that need to be included in a resin are added, to avoid repetition. In that way, you don’t have to remove something that gets in the way of another scratchbuilding part, or break a detail part while scratchbuilding. Final details go on just before paint. Some are painted and then added. These models are at least a month away from completion.

As far as a lot of hoses, consider this one - servo driven – not hydraulic. Each joint contains a servo motor – and on this model the joints are movable. Hoses are a fixed length on models that have no movement. With hoses on this model, one pose may look perfect, another might show the hoses as being too long, another too short. And where would the electronics be? In that long waist, of course! It is the center hub of all main components.

Just for grins, think of it this way…. If someone is smart enough to build such a machine as a Warhound, would he (or she) be dumb enough to allow it to be disabled (i.e., stop or fall over) by a simple pocket knife (or a bullet) on an exposed hydraulic line? Makes for good visuals, but not real practical.

I think it should be a requirement that GW people that design models & rules should have served on a military operation front line somewhere…. Just food for thought

This update is going to be chalked full of pictures.

First off another toe:

And a master for the shin armor:

Shin master in place:

The shin guard will be attached by 2 small screws

4 toes in place and shin master:

Well the easiest way to mass produce toes is 4 at a time:

Getting better and better.

Any plan in place for covering the screw heads?

Kyoto-san was a humble government worker. Everyday he shuffled
from his house to the embassy, bearing documents to be signed by
great public officials promising big promises between his native land
(so far away) and "the Red Land" (where all government officials learn
their trade). He did not meet the eyes of those that signed or sent him
with orders to get signed. His eyes remained low, bowed, respectful,
and Kyoto-san only ever saw the folded hands, the desks, and the
feet of those men in power above him.

In this way, Kyoto-san lived. - Malfred
