Hey guys, I wanted to ask a question about battle standard bearers. This is the closest forum to asking specific questions about the rules so I hope its in the right place...

anyway, I wanted to make my own unique Standard Bearer so i was going to customize the goblin hero

But somebody said you can't have a battle standard bearer with a 2 handed weapon. I can't find that in the rules though, only that they can't have any other magical items.
He'd be perfect cuz he already has that rack on his back, easy to model a standard on him.

Restrictions are army book specific. In the Dwarf book for instance, you cannot select any mundane upgrades once you have become a BSB. You may still take runes, though.

In VC, you can about take anything you please.

In every book I'm aware of (except for Lizards where the Slann serves as BSB) taking a magical battle standard means you cannot purchase other magical items.

Looking at your specific army book, your BSB may not select any mundane equipment other than light or heavy armor or a mount. If there were a two-handed magical weapon available to you, you could still take it, but it would prevent any magical banner from being taken.

In short, there is no blanket prohibition on two handed weapons for BSBs, but other restrictions that often combine to have a similar effect.

Hope that wasn't too confusing or long-winded.

Zeke is exctly right.

In 6th edition (and earlier?) it used to be pretty much across-the-board that BSBs were restricted from taking shields, two-handed weapons, etc. But it was written in the individual army books. One of the changes they made to the books around 7th ed and since is to open up more equipment options for BSBs, to make them more attractive/useful. I have no doubt that in the next O&G book, you'll get more options. Sadly, until then your BSB is stuck.

The restrictions on how the BSB can be equipped are listed in each Army Book, under the BSB upgrade section.

Removing these restrictions started with the High Elf Army Book. This book, and all others after it do not have those restrictions.

I am a Utah man sir, I live across the green, our gang is the jolliest that you have ever seen, Our co-eds are the fairest, ans each one's a shining star, our yell you'l hear it ringing through the mountains near and far.
Who am I sir? a UTAH MAN am I. A UTAH MAN sir, I will be till I die.

Bear in mind that even the earlier ones don't have an explicit restriction; they just have more limited equipment options. This means that there is sometimes a way to get around this.

IIRC, for example, all Black Orcs have the Armed to da 'Teef rule, which gives them the option to fight with a great weapon or two hand weapons. Assuming a Black Orc BSB still has this rule, he'd be able to use either option.

The Wood Elf book is another example- the BSB loses his nonmagical bow when you upgrade him, but nothing prevents him from taking a magical one if you want.
