That is a nice big commission you have there. Am looking forward to seeing you tackle the pods as I am aware that you are not the biggest fan of painting vehicles.

And do you have to tackle the interiors on them?

Awesome work right out of the gate. It's going to be an epic force, seeing so many models with your grimdark stamp on them is going to be too much for me, going to wind up spending m entire income on commissions

This should be a lot of fun to watch. Deathwatch seems to really be a painter’s army. Every mini can have it’s own touches and personality. No need to slog through uniform rank and file troops just to fill a role.

Ta folks!

@Thraxas: Yep, the pods are going to be... fun! I do have to do the interiors, but I think I'll paint as much as I can in sub-assemblies before putting it all together. They're not going to be my favourite things to paint, but as a trade off for getting to paint this many of the awesome DW Marines I'll soldier on through!

@Nev: That's exactly why I don't normally take on army jobs, and why I broke that rule for this one, as it's basically an army of characters. Hopefully at then end of this I'll be able to send the client a totally unique army with as much personality as I can cram in!

And with that in mind, here's the next two Marines joining the force.

Flesh Tearers Bolter/CCW Veteran, and maybe one of my favourite DW models I've done to date. The cut-down Chainsword looks (to me a least) a lot more vicious, the base sets off the pose well and he's got a very menacing air, I think.

And a Marine with bolter and Storm Shield, I made him an IH as a nod to the HH-era Medusan Immortals who carried similar gear. He's got a very aggressive, forward-moving pose, so when I get to the next shield Marine I'll be going for something much more defensive.

That's all for now, but there are already more on deck so stay tuned tomorrow for Even! More! Deathwatch! These minis took me to 250 minis for the year, so despite October and September being pretty barren on the painting front, I think my revised target of 300 is back on! Between the rest of this commission and the Knight Models Suicide Squad set I have on the way, that should just about get me there.

Cheers for reading, any thoughts welcome!

I like that mini Chainsword, definitely says "small but mighty". What I like about these particular set is that you change the "spot colour" (I think that's what it's called) between Marines. Like, the red is more prevalent on the Flesh Tearer, but it's more steel on the Iron Hand.

Either way, great work. Do you find doing them in pairs is the best way to do them? I'm about to tackle mine and I was wondering how many to do at a time.

Pretty monstrous haul there, Para! Personally, if I was doing commissions (no chance of that), I'd insist on them being assembled first.

Look forward to seeing this Deathwatch force painted up though .

Thanks folks!

@Warboss: Yeah, I definitely like to play with colour to add a bit more character. It goes back to my DW armour technique, I used warmer colours on the pre-black layer on the FT and colder ones on the IH, so now they both have black armour but it's a slightly different black on each.

I paint them individually, I've just posted in pairs as that's how many I've had time to do today and yesterday! I'd say models like this definitely deserve to be painted one at a time, as I personally find when doubling up or batch painting I tend to miss details or steps. Others can do it with no problem, though, so it's all down to what works best for you! I do keep at least one more primed at any given time, so if I finish one and am still in the painting mood, I can get straight on without needing a break, I just wouldn't do 2 at the same time.

@AoV; To be honest, I much prefer the minis being unassembled. Not only does it make painting easier as I can leave bits off if I need to, but for something like this where I've got (relatively) free reign beyond equipment specifics, I can play around and get the most from the kits and poses. With minis as nice as this I enjoy putting them together as much as painting them, mould line cleaning and all!

And even more!

Veteran with Frag Cannon. Gave him a Chainblade bayonet as a) he's a Blood Angel so loves a bit of chopping and b) there will be 6 Frag Cannons in the force and there's only one FC arm set, so I want to try and make the poses as unique as possible.

Secondly, the first of 5 Stalker Bolter Marines. As with the Frag, there's only one stock arm pose so out come the clippers! It was actually a bit of a pain to get this arm combination lined up, but that's what you get for mixing and matching like this. Head is from Anvil.

And the 6 I've done so far. As anyone who's ever seen a codex can tell, this isn't actually a squad, and I'm not painting these in any sort of order. Spoilered as the pic is big!
Spoiler:

That's all for now! Check in tomorrow for Blackshields and Bolters!

Thanks for looking, any thoughts welcome!

I love that little bayonet on the massive gun. I reckon that would work pretty well on the Heavy Bolter too.

Nice painting Para.

You are going great guns thus far, should be ready to send off to your client a week friday.

Great to see some of the tweaks and kit bashes that you have made, they really help to add character to the miniatures.

Cheers guys!

@Thraxas: I do feel I'm really getting to grips with the DW kit now, having just finished off building my third lot of them (my own included). I think when I did my first set back in the summer I may have said the kit was pretty limited build-wise despite the large number of options, but a little time with a sharp knife, a bits box and a dash of green stuff is doing wonders for them. You've just got to start breaking it down a bit more; seeing if shotgun arms can be used for bolters, swapping a Power Sword arm for a shield arm, using the odd spare from other kits to get just the right pose. I'm confident now that I can get all 30 Veterans looking distinct now.

@Bottle: I think I am going to enjoy blitzing out an army in a short space of time. Typically I tend to do a squad here and a squad there and build up over time, rather than getting the whole lot in one go, basically because I can't afford to do that and because I do start losing interest when I'm not getting that many games in (that's why my AoS plans faltered a bit over the summer). With this pile of models and a deadline to work to, not to mention the need to keep the quality up rather than taking shortcuts, I'm getting really inspired. The trick now is not to get too attached to them!

Knocked out a few more today, two Bolter guys and a Blackshield.

Raven Guard

Minotaurs:

Blackshield:

With this guy, I wanted to give him the look of a real fanatic, a Marine who's given himself over entirely to the Deathwatch ideals. Any trace of his old livery has been crudely daubed over, he's taking trophies from the Xenos he's slain, and he's too busy taking the fight to The Enemy Without to keep his armour clean between battles, hence he's even more beat up and worn than the rest!

One more Veteran to go in this first batch, then this weekend it's over to some Bikes, One of the two characters and maybe a Drop Pod if I have time. The Bikes are definitely showing their age and desperately need updating, that kit is horrible to put together by modern standards, has mould lines by the inch and some of the details are stupidly soft. GW, if you're listening, new bike kit please! Then I might actually buy some!

Anyway, that's a wrap for today, cheers for dropping by!

Wow, you sure knock 'em out fast! Of course, for you that's easy apparently. I love the Blackshield with the giant hammer; I picture him looking right at his enemy and quoting Thor from The Avengers: "YOU WANT ME TO PUT THE HAMMER DOWN!?"

@Bottle: Group shots will happen as soon as a) I have a coherent set of squads finished rather than just a bunch of dudes and b) I can figure out a good light setup for it, my lightbox can barely get half a dozen minis in at the moment.

@Tom: To be honest, I'm still not sold on the bikes, they're just such old, clunky, boring models! Tried to spice it up with the DW bits, but there's only so much you can do!

Great looking Deathwatch army in the making there, Para. You've done a great job of making them look like the unique individuals that they are so far. Keep up the group shots every so often as well, it's going to be great watching them grow bit by bit.
