For such a good model I see surprisingly little fanfare over its release. Granted that at $57.75 US this model isn't for everyone and LotR/WotR is the smallest of the three games made by GW, but nevertheless I would have expected more excitement over this release. There are virtually none to purchase on eBay which to me is another sign that no one is buying this and no one is expecting anyone to buy this. I don't play LotR, but this Winged Nazgul model is cool enough that I'm thinking about getting one just to paint. It's a shame it's not getting more attention.

It's a nice kit and good to have a Nazgul in actual flight on a clear plastic rod rather than having the monster curling its tail around to touch the base.
The problem is the price, £30 for a plastic kit, it's not that big afterall. Like everything else GW release now, the prices have gone from what I'd call "very expensive" to "impossible". I mostly skip over GW stuff unless there are discounts to be had. Sad really, because the LOTR stuff is mostly very good.

The GW staffers at the local GW also commented on the lack of ANY release activities, fanfare, promotions, etc for this release. It doesn't hurt that I've never seen anyone play LOTR at the GW, and the staff sees it oh maybe once a month.
For such a lucrative licensing deal, GW needs to make LOTR more enticing to their customer base. Ideas?

Maybe something crazy like dropping the price to something a little more reasonable, or making the scale something that is actually worth it.
Other then that, a better idea is to just outright make the game relevent. No one plays it.. then you pull it out and play it. maybe a lord of the rings online campaign special, or dropping a special item in the tabletop that you can input into the online game.
Get a 6 month campaign going for the game, then put some high speed stuff in the White Dwarf rag and give people something to like.
How about something crazy like other generic characters besides the old standards. A table top battle game wqith a whole whopping couple of movie and book chracters.
Contrary to popular belief, everyone doesn't care to play the same old same old. If they want to pimp out the Hobbits, then pimp out the hobbits. Don't just pull out twenty figures of dumb frodo, jumping frodo, gandof, stridor, larry, moe, and curly.
Other then that, My personal opinion is that They don't have serious figures, so why give it a serious effort? Crap scale, Crap poses, same figure 100 times, They come out with a full sacale war rules set, but have a whole whopping 20 guys... thats sure to make me want tp buy a half size dragon that costs the same amount as a land raider.
If you want Fantasy, play fantasy.
This game is a waste of resources that could have gone to better use supporting the specialist games line.

I wonder how much it would have sold if the scale was the same as WFB/ WH40K?
Right now I think mostly painters/collectors buy...

The blurb on the website said something about lots of comments by staff about how good the Nazgul are, and just got to have all nine.
Even with a staff discount is still 200 quids worth.
would be amazing, but a lot of tin for relatively limited game play.

Speaking as someone who got heavily into the game in the early days, there was NO WAY I'd game LotR in a GW store back then. The hostility and mockery from 40k-loving gamers (and, to their shame, staffers) had to be seen to be believed. There was a palpable resentment of the game by the ignorant buffoons who believed that somehow, magically, LotR was the reason their beloved game was beginning to stink, even though the truth was the revenue from LotR had funded the improved plastics technology that resulted in such kits as the Baneblade!
No. Most GW stores were (and in many cases still are) hostile territory for LotR gamers.
Doesn't mean no one played (or still plays) the game. Just they play at home, or in clubs and away from the moronic " 40k is the only game worth thinking about and you're a moron if you don't agree" attitude that is all too prevalent in the typical GW store. No, Mr BF33932, kill 40k. It's a dumbass game played by kids... GW would do better to dump it and concentrate on games that actually require some thought power to win and artistry to appreciate the models.... And my daddy is bigger than your daddy and can kick his arse, so there!

Well, I do like the LotR game, got a friend into, but he is now lost to the walking muscles we call Catachans. Anyway, for those people who do play LotR Evil forces, then they are more than willing to pay that price for it.
And maybe it is just in Fremantle, but I do see lots of guys playing it. There is also a really large LotR display in the window, and on a table. Or maybe us Aussies are just trying to out-Middle-Earth the Kiwis?

I haven't played War of the Ring yet, but I've ended up with a (painted) Isengard army, and I have to say it is a lovely thing to look at. It's a lot to do with how much I liked The Two Towers, but the LotR models have a natural look which most WHFB models lack. The normal dimensions and weapons are very attractive. So I'm definitely picking up a plastic Nazgul, even though they don't really fit into my army. I suspect a lot of their sales of these models are to people who are more interested in the films than the game.
I hear War of the Ring is actually a better tactical game than WHFB. The LotR range sits uneasily with the other core games, but there's no need to be snotty about it.

Well said tailgunner
have played a few games at home and enjoyed it.
The Nazgul do look good- though with reference to my earlier post, getting all 9 would be a bit extreme
I can't think that GW would continue with LOTR if it was not making a return. They don't strike me as being a company who would stick with a loss maker out of nostalgia or sympathy to Tolkein fans.
Nor do i see how LOTR is detrimental to the development of WHFB or 40K.

I do see a lot more LotR at that store than I did just a year ago, and I really think it is due to their manager making it a whole lot of fun to play there. I mean, hell, he got ME to buy a box of Uruk-Hai just to play in this silly skirmish campaign they have going on Thursdays. I do think there WAS a whole lot of excitement for the new model there, but all that excitement was completely killed by the cost-point. I am definitely of the opinion that GW models overall are priced fairly well, but every now and then a product is released that just makes me raise an eyebrow in wonder. Even at 45 dollars I might see myself purchasing this just to have on my display shelf, but almost 60 dollars is really pushing my sensibilities.
When the red-shirt opened the box of the new releases and handed me the new model, I inspected the cover art and back model and was really impressed. I asked how much, and when he told me the box literally jumped out of my hands and almost hit some WIP models sitting at the employee paint station. I've never had that kind of visceral response before, and I think a LOT pf people are having it. Not necessarily from disgust, but from wonder.
I'll be checking eBay for this one.

I've already been checking eBay for this one with little luck. For some reason none of the usual eBay retailers that sell tons of GW product are selling this one. If it doesn't start showing up on eBay I guess it will have to wait till the next time I do an order with The War Store. Every army in the Warhammer games has at least one unit that is cost prohibitive even after going to plastic and I guess the Winged Nazgul is the "huh, really, it's that expensive?" model for LotR. GW really should have more respect for the $50 US price point, once a model goes over that amount it really makes people think hard about how much they want that model. Going to $57.75 pretty much kills impulse buying no matter how cool the model looks.

As a former LOTR hater, I couldnt agree more with Osbad.
40K is a simpletons game played by people who think they are masters at tactics when all it really is is that you got lucky with dice rolls and built a list using everything that could be broken.
Its not so nice when the shoe is one the other foot now is it, Lotr-haters- 40K-apologists?
That said, GW isnt doing any of their games favors by making the models so damned expensive. This kit is the exact same price as their old metal kit (which was $30 when first released). I would have bought 9 if the model was reasonably priced at say, $40, but I refuse to buy even one at $60. The economies of scale are biting them in the ass for me. I love WotR and because I enjoy playing games based on the LotR engine (Legends of the high seas/old west) I am seriously considering giving LotR another shot since its original inception was so thoroughly bad.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. The price stinks. There's no way I'd pay 35 quid for a plastic Fell Beast. Or even a metal one to be honest...
The only justification in this model is that the wings seem to be a new design, instead of being recycled Balrog wings (complete with "lava" markings) as those with the older metal kit were.
Again we see this asinine attitude of GW that somehow they believe a plastic kit is worth the same as a metal one, when clearly, all right-minded folk find that concept abhorrent!
But bah! I've wasted too much of my life on whinging about GW's ridiculous, self-destructive prices. I'll stop there!
