Been Around the Block

My FLGS in the past has held Iron Builder competitions, where you paint 500 pts a month for 4 months, then at the end you have a nice 2000 pt, fully painted army. Each month you play a 500, 1000, 1500 then 2000 pt game against another participant. The first one we had a tournament at the end, and this added to your score. The second Iron Builder we had a big game at the end and judging was based on painting/modeling/converting alone.
It's gone over well in the past, however we're starting to feel that it may have either run it's course or people just don't have the same excitement for it that they've had in the past.
Has anyone else ever participated in something like this, and if so, what differences have you had? I'm looking to change it up a bit for our next one and we've spun some ideas around the store but I'd like to see some other concepts from the community at large

If you had them back to back to back, yes, that would be a chore.
If you started your year out with them, or just had 1 series of these tournaments per year, that would probably keep the interest up.
Variety is the key. Do something else the other 8 months of the year.
It does sound like a great idea, though.

If this has been for 40k, why not all try WHFB instead?
It can get all of you to try out the 'other' game.
Or if it's a FLGS, try Warmachine/Hordes or Necromunda or Mordheim or BFG or Infinity and start a full blown campaign.

I haven't done this, but it sounds really cool! I will suggest this at my FLGS next time I go

I've been hoping to do one of these... 500 points a month sounds about right. The ones I've seen have been too rapid for me to keep up with.
I agree about mixing it up (trying another system) and only doing this once say every 8 months (4 months on, 4 months off) at the most.
If someone was doing this in my area, I'd definitely participate.
