Basicly anything loud and aggresive,Hardcore,Punk,Metal..it all works well for me.
I honestly couldn't see playing a game with something like Barry White or Teddy Pendagrass (though I love their music) in the background...just wouldn't "fit the mood".

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

Call me odd, but I actually prefer not to have music playing while I'm gaming. At the very most it should be played at a very low volume as "background noise". I find it to be distracting otherwise.
But then again I'm older and thus not a kiddie who has to have music playing 24/7 as if his life needed a soundtrack or something. To be fair, I'm not a big music fan in the best of circumstances. It's not that I don't like it. I do. But I don't have the same obsession with it that many people do. I rarely listen to music in the car, instead prefering news/talk stations for driving noise and am far more likely to play a movie or documentary on the DVD player while painting than I am to put in a music CD. Likewise my Ipod playlist is mostly taken up with videos and audio books.
I never play music when I'm hosting a game (be it Warhammer, real wargaming, or RPGs) at my home and have been know to ask politely to have the volume lowered when playing at other venues. I have a couple of good horror stories about young gamers who brought their portable stereos to convention games over the years without regard to musical tastes and opinion of the other players. That's probably colored my opinion about those that insist on playing music while gaming more than anything else.

A lot of people say I'm a uniformed thug, no better than the scum I hunt down... a fascist cop... a glorified Nazi... a legalized vigilante, handing out his own highly suspect street "justice"... someone with a pathological hatred of superheroes, reveling at the chance to beat the hell out of them. That sounds fair. I can live with that.

For my Orks I like Rammstein.
When playing Empire I prefer classical scores with a bit of a bite, like Holst's Planets score or good 'ol favorites like Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries.
FFXII soundtrack. Genso Suikoden soundtrack. any jazz. I find that having aggressive music playing for more than about half an hour is really lame.

I have all the nBSG soundtracks - even the new one - and they are very, very good.
Season 2, Track 17. That's the best one.

Ya... damn appropriate, that song. There have been some good suggestions so far... but the lyrics and feel of this one Disturbed tune just seem to go really well with a 40K game.
Zombie & Man'o'War are good previous suggestion if you are going for the whole Death-by-industrial theme (Which is my favorite).
Try some Static-X or KMFDM.

I must be getting old, because I think that I'd lose it trying to play a serious game to some of the musical suggestions selected. I'm trying to picture feeling hardcore listing to Metal/Industrial while moving my little plastic army men around and just not being able to keep a straight face. Having that been said, I enjoy symphonic music while I play. If you use winamp, Shoutcast is a great source of music, be it classical, techno, or something more mainstream.

For 'nids, does the Aliens soundtrack even need mentioning? Not sure I'd like music during my games, but if I did, this painfully obvious choice would be my pick.
For Themeatic music, always use instrumental music from sci-fi and fantasy films.
The Prophesy Theme from Dune fits nicely.
M: "You are the universe, alpha and omega, the beast with a thousand young, do what thou whilt shall be the whole of the law. NOW GO FORTH AND MUTILATE!!"
"Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. It means the end and the Death. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw upon your bones. Look out! Samus is here."
Mad Sin.
Zombie Ghost Train.
Chop Tops.
The Creepshow.
A couple of other ones thgrown in for a mix,
The Conan Soundtrack
The Excalabur Soundtrack
The obiquitous Star wars music
The Predator theme
Iron Madin, Guns and Roses, Slayer, Scepultura, some of that hard core nordic Icelandic Black metal. Muh ha ha ha
Then we get the old standards in there, which can usually run from cheese to pretty cool.
Zepplin 3, Some Sabbath, a little Queensreich, and the other 80's hair bqnd stuff that I usually remove and put in more psychobilly, some of that celtic punk, or the old school oi ska.
And yeah, the most part about it is that its background painting music. I don't play anywhere with too many radios playing

Das rad di shicksiles by E Nomine (aplogies to the germans if i spelled that wrong!) Has got to be the best theme music as far as Im concerned....I cant help but seeing an IG gunline firing away from their trenches as an ork mob charges...while there commander looks on muttering the male words to the song...

Thank you! Although I'm a big music fan, I share the same view on music while gaming. It's really distracting, and usually leads to people losing interest in the game sooner, at least in my experience. One friend of mine insisted we try and watch Venture Bros while playing a game and as much as I love Venture, outside stimulus really makes gaming hard to concentrate on. There's some music that works better than others (the store I play at usually has some old surf or rockabilly music going on) but I think thrash metal and the like are a little much. I can paint or walk to class with Anthrax in my headphones, but while gaming it would just get overwhelming.

YAWN! Don't get me wrong all great bands and some awesome music...but...
Heres an idea..... Northern Europe/Scandinavia is the current home to some of the best Symphonic Metal around.
Example: Deathstars - Death Dies Hard
Ex Deo... Ok pretty much ANYTHING from Nuclear Blast Records
Lordi
Other bands making great music NOW:
Sister Sin
Kamelot
Mandragora Scream
You wanna go "Old School"...
WASP
Sex Pistols
Black Flag

I have to admit that I think I would get distracted with too much hardcore music playing also. However, I think the song "let the bodies hit the floor" or "bodies" (not sure the exact title) by drowning pool would fit nicely.
