The other day I was at a local gaming store (not GW) and i had the chance to watch a saturday WHFB and 40K match going. many different players, armies, etc. but the one that caught my eye was two WoC armies facing off against one another. both armies were virtually identical. unit of knights, unit of marauders, unit of warriors, special characters. Strategy was basicly charge and get stuck in first. hack and slash. repeat.

Although i couldn't help but notice the challenge issued between a blood thirster and the other players Lord. Blood thirster is around 300 points if im correct, and the players lord was around 400-500 he claimed. Blood thirster wasted him in 1 turn, failed all saves, etc. I couldnt beleive it. then proceeded to destroy his knights in 1 turn, rinse /wash, repeat with the rest of his army.

This led me to think about my own army. The day WILL come when i face down a WoC player with bloodthirster and lord combo. And watching the players entire army collapse from a bloodthirster charge...i wonder what is the best way to counter this?

If you want my opinion, I find the use of a bloodthirster very cliche, and in all honesty, lazy. So it got me thinking....How can I use my enemies strategy against him?

The one thing i was thinking (someone please confirm if this is a viable tactic) is expect the charge. The idea of the bloodthirster is to get into combat ASAP, otherwise it leaves it open for shooting, etc, similar to a giant. Now im gonna expect charges on the flank, or because the thirster is so strong, right in the front. I was thinking if i had some goblins on the flank with fanatics , to at least do a couple hits and damage before he gets through. plus if he decides to charge through my fanatics, it's possible he could end up dead or beat up bad before he hits the line. IF he hits the goblins (which in all likely hood he will) he'll probably paste them to dust. What is an effective unit to have to back up the gobbos? maybe have some trolls, or hell, a giant waiting behind them to charge the thirster as he flanks the gobbos? or if he over runs the gobbos, that can still give it a chance to roll another unit.

plus, I know the thirster can fly..is it possible for him to just fly over my fanatics and be in combat with the goblins?

Any advice would be great!

May I ask you HOW he could include a Bloodthirster in a WoC army? There are no such thing in Warriors anymore. Were they maybe using the HoC book?

I am at a bit of a loss here. How was a person who was using a Warriors of Chaos Army able to take a Lord choice from the Daemons of Chaos Army?

If it was Warriors vs. Daemons there are only 3 ways to defeat a BT. First you can take a very angry Chaos Lord on a Juggernaut for a 0+ save and pray you make enough Saves when that BT charges in. Second would be a lvl 4 Tzeentch Wizard (either a sorcerer lord or a DP) and pray you get Gateway. The third and final one is using the bait and Flee Tactics with Marauder Cav and 1 to 2 Hell cannons and keep droping stones on him till he dies.

If you are using Special Character you can take Kolek and he will easily make short work of a BT.

Also a BT is around 500 points when fully Kitted out.

Though you won't need to worry about a BT if you're playing against warriors At least that is what I think was your point.

See thats something i didnt know. I think the two players must have agreed on allowing the BT, because it WAS two armies of WoC facing off, i have no doubts about that.

and yes, those tactics sound sure fire if i was playing WoC, but im not, im playing O+G. I imagine i could use a similar approach, as most chaos players i've run into seem to neglect the magic phase. actually now that you mention it, i find most players i run into period seem to avoid the magic phase! something to keep in mind perhaps!

For O&G your best defense is 2 units of Night Goblins with at least 2 units of Fanatics one on each Flank, 4 Bolt Throwers and 1 Rock Lobba. that should keep most Greater Daemon Honest. Also if you are going against WoC. a Doom Diva and a Giant should put you in a good position to win.

For Troops I also Suggest a block of Black Orks and at least 1 unit of Savage Orks.

Sounds like you're idea was similar to mine negative money. its alot of war machiens but at least it'll be worth it if i ever face one down.
I was thinking the giant would be a good counter to it. I mean the stats are alot different..but i think it would be funny watchign a giant pick up the blood thirster and shove it in his pocket or eat it. or just squash it.

In ur gaem, killin ur doodz.

The best way to deal with ANYTHING that is a super-nasty-horrible-destroyer of worlds combat type character.

Combat res. Static combat res.

There are very few monsters in the game that average 5 wounds or more in a single combat phase. Meaining in the front of a fully tooled unit, they lose by one in their first combat phase.

The Supermonsters of the world need to get a bit unlucky to suffer the same fate, but if you can weather the storm, the static res is the best option you have. Also if you can move another unit in and try to outflank on your next turn. Do it.

Typical Bloodthirster is in the 600 point range.

More often than not it'll take 3-400 from you if you counter him well, and what's worse? If he loses that model, in all but hte most extreme of cases, he's also lost the game.
