Last night, while looking for an excuse not to do homework, I decided to do some modeling on my 40k army. A while back I bought a brand new Tau Devilfish off of Ebay. The plan was to put the model together, paint it up and sell it on Ebay for some spending cash. Well it has been sitting in my closet for a couple of months. I finally decided to put it together. Well one thing led to another and I ended up with another looted tank for my Ork Army. I would like input on what I can do to make it more orky.

Nice, I love the idea of looted tau tanks because they're so different than the normal Ork vehicles. However I think right now it looks a little too much like just a devilfish with some gubbins tacked on. Some ideas:

Replace the Engines with something Orky, as you did the turret

Maybe forget having it hover and give it tracks or treads, or even something super ridiculous like having it carried by a bunch of grots or orks.

Armor plates on the front, sides

Cut out the cockpit and just have an ork sitting there in some kind of orky control booth

I'm liking it (love the grot big shoota from the BWagon kit on the front).

The way I see it, you have two choices.
1) Put tracks and/or wheels on it.
2) Chop up some Deff Kopters and put Kopter blades on it. 1 @ each of the rear engines & 1 @ front center.

Did you guys know Canada has a friggin desert?

scratch it up a bit; would be weird to see a lotted veichle which hasnt gotten scratched, shot, burned, etc by an ork army, let alone survive in the meks shop. what army is this gonna be btw?

You're not playing the game like I play it...why aren't you playing the game like I play it?! O_O

Make it a little rough. Right now it looks to "klean an' down right un-orky." Add dents, and some plates that look like they were hastily rivited on, and just generaly damage it. Add orky engines and you'll be good to go.

Second the idea to open the cockpit. Depending on what tools you have, it's possible to remove the panel without damaging it - so you could have it open or closed.

Needs to be roughed up and my idea engine wise is flip one of them up side down and find a big orky jet engine for the other. But a good start.

I like that it's still hovering. I'd get it riding nice and crooked, perhaps with and orky turbine slapped on one half of the engine to keep the ramshackle, unbalanced thing going. Definitely needs a few more weld lines, dents, and armor plates. And rivets. Always moar rivets. Jamming an ork torso into the cockpit would look great, I think, perhaps with a rudimentary screen/rollcage, or some such thing. I definitely like what you've done with the guns and grots, though. I'd keep them as-is.

Oh, and mold-lines... get rid of those! Maybe I'm just anal, but I like to get my orks clean before I dirty them up. Patches and welds are great, but mold lines always look like mold lines, to me.

Great start! A few more orky additions and you'll be ready to paint. Great work!

All the best ideas start this way.

I agree with some other that it should be on treads or wheels. I think it would be hilarious if orks looted a skimmer but were too confused to figure out how it worked so they just stuck wheels on.

Love what you got so far.
few suggestions though
dead space marines streached out on the haul of the tank. Some more skulls mounted to it. Some Gork and mork symboliology of some sort. and more metal patches.
and like they said above maybe cut the engines off ad add like some big jet engines to the back of it.

I like the concept of looted Tau tanks, and yours is off to a good start.
I do however agree with the most of the other post in that it needs to be more "Orkified"(TM).

Looks pretty good so far - I agree with the general "it needs to be more Ork-ified" though, particularly around the engines. Armor plates would look pretty neat, too.

Perhaps the only thing I'm not quite keen on at the moment is the Grot Rigger on the rear engine - he seems a bit out of place. My suggestion for him would be to carve up a little hole in the engine itself and place some kind of hatch over it, like the top of the kannon/big shoota turrets. That way it looks like he's popping out of his hidey-hole in the middle of some very important gubbin' smashing!

It's complicated."

Thanks for all the comments. After thinking on it I decided against putting wheels or tracks on the vehicle. I like the idea of having an ork vehicle that hovers. The engines still need work to make it look orky, but it is better than it was. More to follow at a later date.

Where the cockpit of the the Hammerhead is you could cut it out and put in the cockpit of a pirahna like this one by Boss Snikrot:

That shoudl really give it that orky feeling. Put some armored windscreens around the cockpit sort of like the ork trukk would give it a looted feel. You could make the armor around the cockpit look peeled back. You could even have a sardene can opener in the middle of the peeled back armor.

Now this is the proper way to do this sort of thing. I tried converting a Pirahna as well and I use it as my Looted Wagon but I am thinking it still needed something more as my covnersion was fairly minimal.

As someone already mentioned I love the Tau conversions as they are far from the norm you see of converted Imperial Vehicles.

This has got me thinking though that the ultimate Ork conversion of course would be if some clever Big Mek could take parts from all of the available vehicles from the various races and make some vehicles for the boys. I will now have to give that some thought as a combination of various kits so that each vehicle has at least a part or two from every race in 40K would be pretty awesome if someone could pull it off. I may give this a try even though there are others much better than I at this sort of thing. I have been definetly inspired by this thread.

I think instead of sluggas you should have had the passenger throwing devil horns with his hands in the air. That would have given it a feeling like a true joy ride.

Another idea is to model the passenger mooning the enemy and flipping the bird as they zoomed by.

That's it... Once I have a fully painted ork Army, I am SOOO looting a tau vehicle... and I'm putting the blades, as well as the... err... "stems" that they're mounted to... from some Deff Koptas on a few spots.

Put some trukk nuts on it! I used two wrecking balls off of a trukk for a looted defiler. After you paint take a drill to it and scratch it up.

If resale is your project motivation, I think it will be a lot more saleable if it clearly counts as an ork codex vehicle - a battlewagon being the obvious choice.
