Hi all

so I'm starting a bad moon Ork army and I've finally managed to get some painting done.

I was going for good tabletop standard, I'm not anticipating winning any awards but I wanted something bright and vibrant that would look good on the table..

Stage 1 of my list is a Combat patrol or 40k in 40 minutes force. I hope that getting this finished will give me the chance to get in some games and that will give me the impetus to paint more orks and finish my 2000 pt force which is sat in various levels of assemblage in a glass cabinet in my front room.

So - Ork boyz. 30 Ork Boyz, sluggas, choppas and an Ork Nob leader.

WIP Looted Wagon (a steampunk tank that I bought from some crazy sculptor and chucked some orky glyphs and a leman russ barrel onto to make a wierd orky armoured car/tank thingy)

The yellow turret needs some blending/drybrushing to tidy it up and the barrel needs some work on the metalics. once that's done it's just highlighting the glyphs and painting some optics and it's finished. Overall I'm very happy with how it looks. It's chunky, clunky and looks damn orky

Now some stuff that I painted more or less to break the grind of painting 30 flippin orks or to practice things like battle damage/ rusted metals and different washes.

Firstup - Deffkopta. I want to redo the yellow as it's too light and pale and I want to go with the more orangy, grungy shade of yellow used on the looted wagon and ork boyz. I used the engine segments and rotors to practice dirty ork metalics on and I tried some initial battle damage. I need to redo that as I'm not happy with it (the battle damage)

Trukk. This will be used to transport my ork nobs around in my 2k point army. I used this to prove to myself that painting yellow vehicles wouldn't drive me insane. It still needs work but it's coming togehter. I also have to be careful when I'm painting it as I tend to talk myself into unplanned addtions from the trukk sprue which is why there's some grey planking sat there as this was addedd a day or two ago and needs painting to finish the thing off.

I'm pleased with how it looks but I need to tidy up some of the highlighting, some of the crew details and add some more weathering to it.

Comments, suggestions, critiques all welcome

bit of an epic necro!

So I've had some time on my hands to paint and do other fun stuff....

I wanted my bad moons to look dirty and bright - so see what you think of this biker wip..

I need to finish the highlighting on the black on the rider and the silver/chainmail work on his blades and the bike overall

Here's an ork nob for my second unit of boyz. There's now 50 boyz painted and another 30 to go along with 10 nobz, a battlewagon and around 8 more death koptas.

The army so far - 2 units of boyz, a deathkopta, trukk and looted wagon.

Great work legopirate! Just the right blend and bright and dirty to be convincing. Excellent job. Yeah, those big boys mobs can be a real drag to paint. Have one of each myself and just can't bring myself to do another, though I have more than enough figures. How are you doing your yellow?

The Yellow is Vallejo Game Color Gold Yellow which I wash with a mix of badab black and the Brown gw wash name which I forget the name of...

Once that's done I add a couple of rudimentary layers of gold yellow back on until it looks good at tabletop distance.

when I first started doing the army I tried layering up to very light highlights but it just looked messy and not naturally diry and beaten so I've stuck to keeping the wash fairly heavy and the highlighting fairly muted.

As for large groups of orcs. .... I've just finished a skaven stormvermin which is my next project to give me a break from green. I'm hoping I don't progress at the snail like speeds displayed thus far.

NECRO!

For a long time I was doing other stuff - I managed to get a game of 40kin40 minutes in recently and that rekindled the fires!

my 400 pt list had 5 lootas in so they were the first to get the treatment (all 5 painted between 8am and 11am the morning of the game)

then yesterday I decided to paint another deffkopta...

I have to say I was very pleased with how the lootas turned out and with the way the army looked on the tabletop. It was a real buzz playing with a painted army rather than just grey.

I've ordered a couple more boxes of loota's and burnas. My plan is to rotate through my unpainted stuff moving between 10 boyz or so and 5 specials or a vehicle to break up the monotony.

wow. Lots of comment there!

So a week has passed, I've been a bit hectic at work and today, the day selected by me whilst looking at the weekend's fixtures for painting, my wife had the lurgy. I discovered that without wiffey running crowd control a 5 yr old and a 3 yr old have a knack of burning up free time...

So what did I accomplish this weekend?

well I finished this fella:

I was quite pleased with how he turned out. He's an AOBR nob with a large choppa added from the bike sprue. The plan was for my Ork nob to dish the damage with his big choppa in the game I played on Saturday. My orky knowhow deserted me in the game however and was followed swiftly off the table by my dice throwing skills. This left my ork slugga boyz getting annhilated by my opponent.

alas poor boyz, I knew them well

My shootaboyz I marooned in a building for some reason, god knows why, I still can't understand my reasoning now... They got into the fight too late to turn it in my favour..

I didn't use the trukk this weekend (after it's demise at the hands of a meltabomb last week!

I did use one of my deffkoptas but it succumbed to the curse of my dice luck too :(

My looted wagon can't be used in combat patrol (which I'm currently using to force me to paint units as I have a strict, not painted, not on the table rule but here it is anyways..

The painting isn't the best but I have limited time and ability, I find to knock out something that I consider good takes a lot of time and effort. So I'm focussing on "looks good on the table" and quantity over "high" quality. Personally - I love how my force looks (and plays). Most of my troops seem to do really well or really badly, so I'm usually veering between shame at my spawny dice luck and 40 odd attacks in close combat from 20 man strong slugga squad or shame at the ineptitude of my dice throwing. My Lootas are not shown in this update due to their poor performance yesterday! Back to the fungal spores for those lads I reckon.

I half completed a unit of 8 burna boyz and 2 mechs today but with distractions and frustration at my ham fisted paint skills they're not shown. I gave up due to "poor light" (need for alcohol and computer games) around 17:00 uk time and decided to thrown up a recap thread to keep the blog going so to speak.

Yesterday I faced necrons for the first time. Next time I face them I intend to take a unit of 19 slugga boyz with ork nob and 2 handed choppa, a unit of 19 shoota boyz with rocket launcher and ork nob and the burna boyz. 8 burna boyz and 2 mechs or 8 lootas and 2 mechs cost the same so my force list is planned to allow me to mix and match stuff to keep people at my gaming club guessing whilst also inspriring me to paint more figures so eventually I can play a 2k pt game.

I've also been given some lovely gretchens which need stripping, then I need to raid my IG bitz box and create some cheapo zzzap guns. I don't need them for combat patrol games but I want something with real bit for 2000 pt games as my local club is space marine heavy and I know the cheeky beggars will drop a landraider on me if I give them a chance!

Thanks for reading

Hopefully there will be more to see next week!

Thanks for the feedback.

Recipies to follow;
(all vallejo game colour)

Yellow.
[edit]
(before I paint any yellow, I tend to put either a coat of khaki or a coat of bone white down as it tends to cover better than yellow and it gives a nice close coat for yellows to go over. This means I find it easier getting an even coat of yellow on the model. Sometimes white is too bright for yellow to cover easily which leaves you with either dark n dull yellow or pale and faded yellow)[/edit]

Gold Yellow (devlan mud & ogre flesh wash) Gold Yellow highlights, Gold Yellow and Moon Yellow (1:1 mix) highlight Moon yellow (very light, very watered) on characters/elites

Ork Flesh:
Goblin Green (thrakka green & badab black wash), Goblin Green highlights, Goblin Green & Scorpy Green (1:1 mix) highlights. Highlight of Scorpy Green as above on characters/elites (sometimes followed by thrakka wash to harmonise if I've gone mental with the highlights or made a messy job of blending)

Leather:
Parasite Brown (devlan mud & ogre flesh wash) Parasite Brown highlights, Gold Yellow & Parasite Brown (1:1 mix) highlight (1:2 mix parasite brown/gold yellow) on characters /elites

Black:
Chaos Black (no wash, duh!), Chaos Black / Sombre Grey (2:1 mix) highlights. Chaos Black / Sombre Grey (1:1) highlight on characters and elites, badab black glaze to assist blending.

Metals:
Dry brush tin bitz (heavy). Light dry brush chainmail. lighter dry brush Silver. Then ALL metals get a wash of whatever is washed on the ork skin and leathers/yellow armour. That tends to give that very dull dirty grey metallic affect. If it needs a bit of love I throw a quick n dirty dry brush on but generally it get's left alone as I want the metal looking dirty and not well looked after.

Details tend to get a very bright red or blue pick out just to give that contrast. it's alot quicker than it sounds as it tends to go airbrush black. Do metals. Basecoat everything non metallic. 2 washes one after another. (Computer game break or put together MOAR ORKS) then highlight one after another to finish. It's dull on mobs of 10+ but it's effective and I have noticed that even my slow ass easily distracted painting is moving forwards slowly.

Good Idea.

I've drilled the barrels of the latest boyz that I've started painting.

My target for this week was to paint 10 ork burna boyz. I got them finished but I'm not happy with the results. I rushed them and at times I overwashed them which left the end result looking messy and clumsy.

Still, they're painted and I will add them to the repaint schedule once I've finished the force.

I've been playing alot of combat patrol and my current list has been struggling of late. As a result I've decided that I'm playing my orks wrong and I'm changing the list, running the ork boyz in smaller units of 10 (rather than 20 as before) to give me more flexible units and the ability to spread my fire/combat.

I've also decided to take a deffkopta with kustom mega blasta and 10 lootas.

I'm taking these as my orks do fine until they hit things like necrons, genestealers or space marines. They lack the oompf to do anything more than speedbump these models so my new plan is to use the lootas to whittle down my enemy from range whilst screening them from incoming baddies with expendable units of boyz. The deffkopta can zip around melting the odd badguy here or there.

I've converted a deffkopta using a multimelta barrel as the "mega blaster" and filling in spaces with plasticard and jewelery wire.

For next weekend I hope to have the deffkopta and 5 more lootas painted to unleash on my enemies.

I've also acquired some killa kans which will be unleashed as they're finished. These however, will be seperate projects as I want them to attract alot of attention on the field and look good!

Cheers for reading

Those look great man. Ive been playing BadMoonz ever since I decided on what I want to play And I think you inspired me to repaint my boyz in black/yellow like you have. I was going to go with a deserty scheme, and although it looks good when done, it takes FOREVER to paint them, and as any Ork player knows, thats to damn long when you got 80+ boyz running around

Also dont get to sad about the lack of comments, firstly this is DAKKA, youll get a ratio of about 1 comment per 10k views, not much you can do there unless your either really popular or your stuff is GD worthy. And 2, the DAKKA blog section goes really fast, Ive seen mine go from front page to 2nd or 3rd in less then a day. But keep at it

Hi All

Time for the weekly update. I played a couple of games of combat patrol today and managed two solid wins.

On both occasions my units of Lootas were the stars of the show with a kustom mega blaster deffkopta coming in second place.

I've discovered in recent games that in 400pt games on a 4' table that squads of 20 boyz lack the oomph in close combat vs Tyranids and Necrons, whilst being unwieldy and difficult to get the benefit of. As a result I took three units of 10 boyz (2 with shootas and 1 with slugga/choppa combos) and used them as mobile screens to distract, hinder and generally harass my opponents.

Whilst people were trying to take out my boyz or get into range of my lootas the weight of numbers and multiple str7 or 8 hits from lootas/deffkoptas turned the fights in my favour. The deffkopta seemed to hit with surprising frequency and at str 8 ap2 melted alot of high toughness high value enemies.

After losing last week I decided to take some more lootas in place of burnas and resolved to paint up another 5 lootas by this weekend. I also needed to model a KMB fitted deffkopta and because I wanted both a challenge and to have something fun to paint that was added to my painting list too.

So with no further ado...
The new unit of lootas (with a head swap and using AOBR boyz bodies so I don't end up buying 4000000000 boxes of burnas and lootas from gw!)

And the whole 5

(note the drilled barrels!)

My KMB fitted deffkopta, convered using a stanley knife, some plasticard and some multimelta barrels!

Finally I've got a wip shot of what's on the table tomorrow/next week..

I'm hoping to get most of the kan and bikes sorted tomorrow (depending on kiddies and wife aggro) so i can finish for next Saturday. This is all heavily work dependent, with the start of term fast approaching and a rake of work needed doing before the RL Lootas I mean students return in September!

Another weekly update.

Unfortunately the camera is flat and I've not achieved much. I'm away most of this weekend visiting peoples and stuff so I'll try and post some wip stuff of my first killa kan at some point.

I'd hoped to finish the kan and the bikes and maybe push on to a second kan but a combination of rl, tiredness and alcohol have defeated me!

Pics to follow once camera charged.

No games this week either :( My local group seems to be doing well though and the resurgence of 40k at the club seems to have pulled some old faces out of the woodwork which is nice.

I also received over 2kpts of chaos space marines over the course of the week. I traded some Warmachine bits and bobs that frankly, I hadn't touched in years (many years) for the bones of a nice large emporers children army, so at some point black and pink marines should start filtering in here along with black and yellow orks.

I also have 2 tactical squads of crimson fists and a landspeeder to get painted for a club event in a few weeks. That should be interesting!

Thanks for reading any advice on painting EC csm or Crimson fists will be greatly appreciated

OK, so Camera charged..

The Killa Kan is coming along nicely. I'll need to grunge up the silver and do some freehand :cripes: at some point but the main colours are in and shaded, I just need to blend up now and make it look pwetty

That's coming along nicely, I need to try and squeeze some painting in on Monday if I can.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, traded a ton of warmachine stuff for...

I always wanted an emporer's children themed csm army so I'm going to do that, and have some plague marines/ world eater support added in

Finally - I posted these a while ago. At some point I need to paint up some more of my IG army..

I know holy mould lines batman. it was one of those "oh it will be ok" moments then once I'd painted it I was thinking, you muppet, why didn't you clean that properly? :/

Ta for reading, hopefully I can update with some finished ork stuff mid week.

Iz had some grots werkin in da werkshop this morning...

overall I'm very happy with it. I need to do details and battle damage + decent base and then it's ready for gaming with.

I've built some CSM for my combat patrol force which I want to use to again, stimulate me to paint and also to give me a break from green and yellow every once in a while.

I don't think my list is particularly competitive but it gives me a chance to paint lots of Emporer's Children and generally see how I feel about csm...

The List for CSM will run as this:
No HQ cos none of the CSM HQ choices have less than 3 wounds!

Troops:
Emporer's Children x 6 including melta gun & aspiring champion with melta bombs

Noise Marines x 6 including sonic blaster & Noise Champion with Doom Siren

Heavy Support
Chaos Havocs x 6 including missile launcher & aspiring champion

That gives me 18 models to paint, 400 pts on the nose. I wanted to squeeze a rhino with havoc launcher in but I thought to myself that I'd rather have that third unit than a squad of 10csm and a rhino. I'll see how it plays. I think it will be tough because my my ork combat patrol has 30 shoota boyz, 10 lootas and either a killa kan or Deffkopta for the same points value!

A weekly update..

well I finally finished the killakan and I'm happy with the brightness of the finish. I need to work on my "neatness" as things still look a bit messy or blurry in places and I know it's brush control etc which is letting me down.

It will look great on the table and I'm looking forwards to unleashing it on some unsuspecting friends shortly.

I've also started work on my CSM project and a first model is finished..

Again it's a bit messy in places and I feel that I need to work on the gun and some of the highlights to give better blends but I am happy with it. I hope to improve with more practice.

I've got 8 khorne bezerkers on the go as we speak. When they're done I'll post them up. They need a couple more base coats then washes and highlights but considering I've only had a day to paint this week I'm happy.

The City of Grey in the Land of Wet (Coventry, UK)

Well it's been a few weeks.

Work was mental with a fire in one of our network cabs, a fire at our furniture suppliers and builders doing their best to cut our network cables whenever they had a chance :/

I finally got some time this weekend for another game (orks vs eldar, which turned on possibly the most unlucky series of events I've ever witnessed. First the poor eldar general had blind scouts who succeeded in rolling 5 1's on their initial attack on my lootas, and then 2 turns later with his scorpions poised to pounce and eviscerate my shoota boyz they failed a morale check and proceeded to run away 12". By the time he had them back under control and one their way back to the fight the rest of his army was gone and they decided to bugger off. Hugely enjoyable for me but very lucky as my opponent did mostly everything right and was confounded by his dice luck yet again).

So.. I'm waiting on some bits for my orks at the moment, namely a deffrolla for my battlewagon and some kromlech post apocalyptic guns to convert some aobr boys into shoota boyz.

I'm also hunting around for some big meks and other odds n sods. This has left my ork force rather paused whilst I attempt to knock up a quick 400pt csm force.

My WIP Rhino for my khorne berzerkers is almost finished, I hope to get the zerkers finished off later today but as luck would have it. I book a day off to paint and my wife get's called into work leaving me on school run and kids patrol duty! I reckon I've got some gretchins sabotaging my painting time until I get back to the orks

I need to tidy up the exhaust stacks, some of the highlights need reapplying and the blends need tidying on the black (noticably the head on shot) but I'm quite pleased with that. It's taken about a day of painting time (if that). I've already finished the optics on the first hatch (which aren't even started in the pictures) and I need to sort out the headlights etc. The Havoc Launcher is magnetised and on the underside of the hatch house it I have the searchlight fitted so I can switch loadouts and be wysiwig still.

I'm still struggling to get that "neat" finish which I see in so many blogs here, I hope time and practice will help me reach that look.

Hi All

Sorry for the hiatus. I've been gaming with my 600pt battlewagon rush list

I've finished a battlewagon, and I've got another wagon and trukk to do along with a couple of kans and some nobs with powerklaws.

I'm working my way towards a 1000pt mech based list with two wagons, two trukks and some deffkoptas for outflanking and ambush shenanigans. I want to get another wagon and some nobs on warbikes for my 15-2000 pt force but I plan to build a kan/dredd based force too so that I can keep the players at my club guessing and to keep people thinking about what I might run with

The wagon is (as you'd guess seeing my painting) rather bright and looking suitably grubby..

Thoughts, comments etc, all greatfully recieved.

Hey All

So, another week and some more progress.

yesterday I had a game against a necron player who was testing out some stuff from the new codex. I'd always wanted to try a mini-kan wall out so I thought I'd give the following list a bash..

Big Mek with KFF in a unit of 5 burnas

20 ork boys, nob with pk
19 ork boys nob with pk

Kkan with skorcha

KKan with Rocket Launcher

KKan with grotzooka.

The kans were great, attracting nearly all of his attention whilst my boys jumped onto each of his units and the nobs went to work. I managed to get my burnaboyz into action along with big mek and they went well although I think they're a luxury at this pv and would probably be better replaced by a deff dredd or something similar..

Keeping up with my "must be painted" rule I had to finish two killakans to field this force and without further ado here they are;

And a family shot..

next time I get a game I'll try and get some shots so you can see them in action

Thanks I probably will go back and spike it up a tad at some point, I wanted to get a good finish first and then think about metallics and additional details once I was happy with the chassis. My Chaos project is currently paused as I've fallen back in love with my orks and I'm trying to get a good 1000pt bw/trukk spam list painted. Once that's done I want to expand it to 1500 by adding Nob bikers, storm boyz and some warbuggies, at which point it should be close to summer and the perfect time to be thinking about restarting the chaos force (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

never underestimate the powers of small pics! Thanks for the feedback! I like contrasts in my forces and I have an eldar force planned too. That however will contain no trace of black as I'm well n truly sick and tired of painting that "colour"

I have to say that the stunning conversions and paintjobs that I see in this section regularly constantly inspire me to paint more, and work harder on getting those details right and the lines crisp. It's hard work but I always enjoy the look of surprise and horror when I put 50 odd yellow orks in various yellow vehicles on the table

Most of my opponents simply couldn't handle the threats coming at them, especially with trukk mounted mobs of boyz moving at 18" a turn

I had to paint a second trukk this week to give me my two transports, I tried to weather it using the "hairspray" technique but I must've messed it up somehow as when I tried to soak and then remove the paint I started taking all the paint off. I had to then paint the weathering on which looked ok... (I guess!)

This week I am trying to get a rhino. 5 chaos marines with melta and 7 berserkers finished for a combat patrol game next weekend. The berserkers just need highlights and basing, the csm and rhino need painting up from scratch. Could be a bit of a push but we'll see what happens

Thanks!

I finished highlighting the reds on the berserkers last night along with the face and started work on the golds. I should be able to finish them this evening with a bit of luck which leaves me able to wash and highlight the "emporer's children" csm squad with Melta Gun and rhino.

I've spikied up the EC rhino too so its got some additional detail which needs work and which should break up the black and lurid pink
