I know the warhammer community is a real stickler for colors of armies, but is really cool about conversions as long as they started out as GW models. What is it like with Warmachine/Hordes.
I ask because I just bought a Cygnar army to start painting, and I was wondering how closely I have to follow the codex gallery to not be harrassed by power gamers...

You can paint them anyway you want, but conversion rules are more strict on the official tournaments than in GW world. Here is the official conversion policy from PP's site.

A power gamer is more likely to call you out on model representations than color
scheme. Anyway, if you're only playing casually, just gauge how things will go
by your local play group. If you're participating in events, you'll probably have to
have official models or clear every single conversion with your TO or PG.

In a nutshell. . .
1. You can paint your Cygnar any colors you like.
2. The end model has to be made up mostly (50% or more) of parts from the original model.
3. You have to use the same, or similar weapons. You should clearly and accurately indicate if a weapon has a special property (like a chain weapon, or reach): so it's okay to substitute out a sword for another sword, but not a sword for a spear.
4. Warjacks are a little more stringent: you also have to use the same type of weapon. So if a model has a huge cannon and an axe, you can't swap out the cannon for a gatling gun, or the axe for a sword. This is because many warjacks use the same chassis but different weapon loadouts.

The conversion policy may seem a bit odd coming from 40K or WFB, but it's there for a good reason. WM/H features more than a few models with a very similar appearance, but dramatically different rules (most notably in the form of casters and epic casters). I've seen a few people make honest mistakes i.e. confusing eButcher for pButcher or eCaine for pCaine, that effectively cost them the game. It's important for your opponent to be able to tell at a glance what everything is.
"Oh, so that Ironcald was actually Ol' Rowdy and my jack is knocked down and missing a third of his boxes in my turn..."
Another classic
Explaining to your opponent beforehand won't neccessarily mitigate confusion especially if he's used to seeing a model across the table. It's easy to forget mid-game what something is counting as.

Hmm, I was thinking of using eFiora as the base model for Denny...

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

The tournament circuit will be a lot stricter but every group I have played with accepts proxies. So many armies are only partially painted that I would be surprised if anyone complained about a painted army. There is much greater flexibility in Warmachine. In truth there is a fair amount in most 40k for most armies too. I play Tau and no one has every complained about my paint scheme. Rail guns yes, paint scheme no!?

If a conversion unquestionably looks like the model the conversion is based on, you're good to go -- I've never seen anyone complain about those kind of conversions even in competitive play (see the Extremoth: http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?808-The-Extremoth-now-with-soundtrack!)
If you find yourself saying: "see, this converted iron clad is really a destroyer, and this crazy stack of barrels is actually a mortat" don't expect to have much luck.
In general, avoid proxies, do high quality conversions, and always keep an original with you at a tournament.

The official tournaments aren't really that conversion friendly. And people on the internet are often very anal about conversions. But I've found that in person, warmachine/hordes players are fairly reasonable about it all.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

I'd like to see the Joker's colors on Cygnar. That sounds cool.
SOOOO....
I could hypothetically paint my Cygnar in Red? Or is that falsely representing Khador?
I don't think I will be converting much. Maybe a repose at most. Things aren't as modular in Warmachine as they are in 40k. (Not that I'm complaining)

You can do whatever colors you feel like, they're your models.
Yeah, sometime I need to take pictures of my Cygnar and post 'em here.

Despite the fact that in-faction models tend to look rather similar, it's VERY difficult to confuse models between factions, in my experience, especially Warjacks. Put an unpainted Cygnar warjack right next to an unpainted Khador warjack and you'll see the difference right away.

Thanks everyone.
I plan on starting my Cygnar as soon as I get to a stopping point with these Orks & Goblins.
I haven't decided on a color scheme, but I'm leaning towards the traditional blue, but with just a personalized/battle ready take on them.

Blue is good with cygnar, I use it myself as the secondary color with khaki.
My gallery has more examples of these.

Very nice painting Metsuri!
I really like your Black 13th. How do you get the black to look so shaded? Is it black thats just drybrushed? When I do that it just looks like a dusty mess.

I was thinking of doing some shoulder, head, and arm swaps between Bane Thralls and Knights to make them interchangable.
That would be a situation of:

Personally, I have found that a grey edging on black can create a good shade look. Current technique is black base, Adeptus Battlegrey edge, then a black wash.
The wash is not necessary, but I like how it blurs the line between the colors.

The black is actually very dark gray, which is then washed with black. If you start with dark gray and then highlight it carefully before washing it down with black you get the impression that the whole is black as the eye tricks you. So only the deepest recesses are close to pure black.

I wouldn't do it personally. The weapons and shields you can't swap because of PP's version of WYSIWYG. The Bane Thrall heads are all attached to the bodies and would be all but impossible to get off without ruining them. The shoulders you could do, but would probably require a Dremel to get the Knights to fit onto the Thralls.
Tip: Replace the hafts of the Bane Knight's weapons with brass rod. PP's metal is really soft, and the hafts are really thin. I've already broken two of them, and am planning on going back thru and replacing all of them as my next Warmachine project, which is a pain since they're already painted.
